Walt Disney Character Pictorial Map

As you may know, there are many Disney-themed collectible globes and maps. If you check out sites like eBay, you can find a few good examples.

This one is assembled and glued on a piece of cardboard and finished with a nice frame:

Made by Jaymar for Walt Disney Productions

Like the Disney globe from another post (click and check it out!) I am not sure what year it is from, but as Hawaii is included as a state, it was made during or after 1959.

Also, Disneyland is very prominently displayed in California, and there is no indication of Walt Disney World in Florida, so it was very likely before 1971.

So we’ll just say that it’s from the 1960’s.

While not in the best of shape, with pieces peeling, some seemingly missing bits, and pencil marks, it still looks great if only for the graphics of our favorite characters:

Walt Disney World Beach Towel

Guest Blogger: Gaylin

My first trip to Florida, July of 1978, I was 18. The whole month visiting a friend and her family. One day she asks “Do you want to go to the Magic Kingdom for a day”? My response, “Sure, if it is not too expensive”. This was my first vacation away from my family, including my first airplane ride and much to my relief my first non-camping vacation.

A few days later 4 teenage girls, on a road trip to see Disney World. I had little clue what I was heading for, we didn’t yet have cable TV until I was 13 and my parents ruled what we saw. I had a few memories of the World of Disney but not much beyond that.

The shocker for me was how the magic hit right there on Main Street. I loved it, every ride, every line-up, the junk food and seeing characters, I was amazed. There was very little in the budget for souvenirs and my friends, being Florida natives, had little interest in shopping. I did manage to talk them into letting me look around a bit and I bought a beach towel. If memory serves me, it was $6.95.

As soon as I got home I started using the towel. I used it constantly, a new favorite.

The next summer, this lovely family invited me back! Of course I went and yes, we did go back to the Magic Kingdom for another day. This time I bought 2 towels.

I wore the first towel out by sheer overuse and then started using the other two. Thankfully I didn’t wear them out quite as much and then stopped using them because I wanted them to last.

This is the whole towel. Very thin cotton when compared to the plush, highly colored beach towels they make now:

The top of the towel with Pluto and Minnie all ready for the beach

The center with Mickey, hanging ten like the cool dude that he is

And the bottom of the towel, including the Walt Disney Productions logo

And, proving it was well made, the tag is still attached!

Finally, one of the few photos I have that proves I was really there, 1978, me and Tigger!!!

Disney’s ‘Plane Crazy’ Alarm Clock

This clock portrays Mickey and Minnie in a scene from their (truly) first cartoon: Plane Crazy.

There is an alarm, which is turned on and off by pushing the horseshoe. It’s pretty primitive, but still works fine, with a new battery of course.

I believe this clock came from the Disney Channel, but am not 100% sure. Back in the early 90’s, the Disney Channel was a pay channel. If I recall correctly, it was $10 a month, and worth every penny. It actually played Disney movies, and old cartoons, as well as shows such as “The Swamp Fox”, “The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh”, and “Zorro”.

Every month you would get a channel listing guide, with articles and a little catalog section. This clock may have been ordered from that.

To see another Disney-themed alarm clock, check out the post entitled Black Mickey Mouse Alarm Clock.

Thru the Mirror Mickey Membership Sculpture

This sculpture depicts Mickey Mouse from the early to mid-30’s. It comes from the Walt Disney Collectors Society.

Mickey is seen atop the world, or at least a part of it anyway. This is taken from the classic 1936 cartoon Short “Thru the Mirror”.

This sculpture measures 4.5″ high

The tail is metal

This was the membership gift sculpture from 2000, and bears the Disney Millennium logo. It also lists ‘On Top of the World’ as part of the description:

Make way for Mickey!

Any member would have loved to get one of these! Just two things though: Where is Mickey running off to, and… that’s one ugly world he’s running on!

Single Bambi Bookend

As a single bookend, this item has little commercial value as a Disney collectible. It’s interesting how often you can find single bookends at flea markets and yard sales, probably because ceramic is easy to break. This one has no indication of when it was made, and no real proof that it is, in fact, Bambi.

The bookend is 6.5″ tall and 4.5″ wide

Doing a Google search, I found it under Bambi Ceramic Bookend, but again, as there are no markings on this one indicating it is a Disney licensed product, it is still in question. As for date, I simply find “Vintage” and “1950s”.

I have found many different ‘Bambi’ ceramic items, none having identification. They look nice, so if bought, they would at least make a good conversation piece.

Walt Disney Classics Collection: Thumper & His Sisters

A couple of days ago, we shared Walt Disney Classics Collection Bambi and Flower pieces. Today, we have 2 other sculpts from the Bambi set, Thumper and his unnamed sisters.

Thumper measures 3″ high:

The figure is titled “Hee! Hee! Hee!…”, because, if memory serves, Thumper finds it amusing that Bambi has referred to his young skunk friend as a flower.

I think the paint on these actually give a feeling of texture. Just beautiful!

For the first production year, 1992, the Walt Disney Classics Collection featured a steamboat wheel mark, honoring Mickey Mouse’s 1928 debut in Steamboat Willie. There is also a special Bambi 50th Anniversary mention on this piece, that the Bambi and Flower pieces I have do not carry.

I mentioned at the top of the post that this other sculpt features Thumpers unnamed sisters. Well, doing a Google search, we find that Thumper has 4 sisters, named Trixie, Daisy, Ria, and Tessie. But, unfortunately, there is no indication as to which 2 are portrayed here.

Titled “Hello, Hello There”

This also has the steamboat wheel mark, indicating it was made in 1992, as well as the 50th Anniversary tag.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this look at a very early WDCC series!

Walt Disney Classics Collection: Bambi & Flower

Guest Blogger: Nick Maglio

The very first movie I can recall seeing was “Bambi” in my hometown movie theater. Some of the images and emotions of this classic have remained with me my entire life, and it is near the top of my all time favorites. I have several Bambi items in my collection, and I am happy to share one I just recently added. Back when the Walt Disney Classics Collection started, I was much younger, and didn’t have the resources to buy many of the WDCC figures I so desired.

Fast forward almost 20 years (!), and my finances have improved, while, often, the prices for WDCC figures have come down, and are more in a price range I’m comfortable with. Such is the case with this Bambie figurine:

This is one of those pieces that makes me smile every time I look at it, and makes me ask myself why I waited so long to get him.

He stands 6″ high, and carries the 1993 Treble Clef production mark. The official title of this piece is “Purty Flower”.

Who is Bambi looking for? Why, the Purty Flower of course!

And here he is now!

I’ve had Flower since 1993. I picked him up because he was a more affordable price, with the hopes that I’d be able to get Bambi at some point in the future.

Watch it!

Flower stands 3″ high, and also carries the 1993 Treble Clef production mark. “Oh…Gosh” is his response to Bambi’s “Purty Flower” comment.

And here they are together, finally, after almost 20 years!

Why are my eyes damp? Must be allergies. (ahem, sniff).

I have 2 other pieces from this set, also purchased waaay back in 1993, so please click this link to see them.

Disney Store 25th Anniversary Merchandise

The Disney Store celebrated its 25th anniversary on March 28th. In addition to the Mickey Ears given to the first 250 guests, they had an exclusive 25th Anniversary Vinylmation:

I’m not sure if it’s limited, as there is no indication on the box.

Interestingly, the arms on this Vinyl are non moveable. Why?

I love the little 25’s!

While it is listed online as “Confetti Disney Store 25th”, on the figure itself, it is “Special Glitter Mickey”

The other item I picked out has been out for a while. I resisted until the 28th, because they were offering 25% off everything in the store, and I had a special $20 off from the Muppets Blu-ray pre-order.

Jiminy Cricket

Sorcerer Mickey

Pinocchio

Tinker Bell

Buzz Lightyear

.

Minnie Mouse

.

Winnie the Pooh and Piglet, along with a Certificate of Authenticity

The original price was $79.50, and even with the discount and $20 off, it was still a bit steep for an ornament set!

.

I hope you’ve enjoyed our Disney Store Anniversary coverage, and if there is anything you’ve seen that you are interested in, you still may be able to get it at your local Disney Store or online at http://www.disneystore.com/

‘500 Disney Stores and Climbing!’ Promotional Button

According to Wikipedia, the 1st Disney Store opened in Glendale, California, on March 28th, 1987.
.
According to this button, from my Jar of Buttons, the 500th Store opened on July 5th 1996, and according to Google, that store was in Phoenix, Arizona.
.
.
Of course, there has been a lot of changes since then, including not actually being owned by Disney for a time. They are now once again owned by The Walt Disney Company.
.
Happy 25th Anniversary to The Disney Store!
