Disney Dollars – Currency with Character

Disney Dollars were introduced in 1987 at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. For an in-depth history of Disney Dollars, please check out disneydollars.net.

I bought my first Disney Dollars at the Disney Store in 1992, for use on my first trip to Walt Disney World that year. I saved a few, and have picked up more through the years.

Let’s start with the earliest dollars, the $1 and $5 bills:

A waving Mickey greets us. Series 1991

“May be used as legal tender only at Disneyland Park, Walt Disney World Resorts and the Disney Stores.” “Disney Dollars may be spent or collected and saved as souvenirs and are redeemable at any time before or after any time of inactivity.”

A lovely illustration of Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle on the back

Goofy looks proud to be honored with the 5 Dollar bill. For my second trip to Walt Disney World in 1994, I picked up a few more Disney Dollars, including this fiver.

Same disclaimer as to where the dollars could be used, but with a notation that they could only be used in the U.S.A. and Puerto Rico.

The highlight of this is the absolutely beautiful illustration on the back

1993 was Mickey’s 65th birthday, and this momentous occasion called for a special dollar, and Mickey is decked out in a tuxedo to celebrate.

1993 was also the year that Mickey’s Toontown opened in Disneyland, which is commemorated on the back.

Disney Dollars even came with their own fun envelopes. “Currency With Character”. Cute!

Mickey Solar-Powered Bobble

Guest Blogger: Gaylin

A few trips ago, maybe in 2005, I picked up this Mickey Solar-Powered Bobble from the Disney Sunshine Friends collection:

.

I love this guy. He sat in my living room quietly bobbling back and forth until this spring. I guess he bobbled too much and now just sits still. Very sad, but still cute!

I think it is rather weird that Mickey has no mouth. Who is going to eat that popcorn? The slice in the top of the popcorn is to hold one of two cardboard signs that came with this. I couldn’t find the signs when I was taking the photos.

At 4 inches tall and 4 inches wide, he doesn’t take up much room. I bought this at Walt Disney World, obviously you could get it at Disneyland as well.

The little red plastic balloon is on a spring and wobbles when poked

Yes, you can see that the solar panel is clean – it just doesn’t work anymore

Disney trade mark. Made in China.

Somehow I managed to save the packaging it came in. I like how it says ‘never needs batteries’. It doesn’t say it will always work!

On the bottom you can see the two memo cards it came with. Both had Mickey on the front with space to write on the back.

Oh, and Mickey says: “Have a Disney Day!”

Pooh’s Hunny Pot Tea Set

Guest Blogger: Nick Maglio

I picked this Winnie the Pooh honey and tea set up at the Columbus Flea Market recently for $5. My wife is a honey lover, and I thought she’d love this, especially the honey pot:

.

I mean “Hunny Pot”

I’m not sure what “honey syrup” is, and neither my wife nor I have been adventurous enough to find out. The tea is pretty good, though.

The real star of this show is the Hunny Pot!

So cute!

So, who’s up for a spot of tea? With honey!

Ceramic Pooh Figurine

Guest Blogger: Nick Maglio

Recently I came across this ceramic Pooh figurine at the Columbus Flea Market:

.

The seller was asking $10. I said “thank you”, and walked away. My wife was a little further back, looking at something at a different table. When we got home, she proceeded to surprise me with this very figure. She would not say what she paid for him however. “You aren’t allowed to ask how much a gift is” was her response. Fair enough.

This Pooh is 4.5 inches high…

The Walt Disney Production mark indicates it was produced before February of 1986

This was not the only Winnie the Pooh bought by us at the flea market this day. Please stop back soon to see more Pooh!

Disney World’s 10th Anniversary Guides and Tickets

Guest Blogger: Nick Maglio

Today, I’d like to share several items sent to me from a trip taken by my wife’s Aunt Sandy, Uncle Roger, and cousin Jill to Walt Disney World in July of 1982, just a couple of months prior to EPCOT Center’s opening.

From their park tickets, we can see what days they visited: June 30th and July 2nd, 1982.

This was Jill’s child’s ticket:

$17 for a 2-day passport!  Adjusting for inflation, that is approximately $40 today!

Aunt Sandy and Uncle Roger’s Tickets:

$21 adjusts to just under $50 in 2012! I don’t think I need to, but will point out that a 2-day pass costs a bit more today!

Adjusted for inflation, $1 is under $3 today. Parking is currently $14:

I’m not sure if the parking lot is still broken down into the same characters, as we don’t rent a car when we fly in. On this day, they were parked in Pluto, space 21.

Now let’s take a look at the guides. The two covers are slightly different, so I’m assuming they changed them monthly? Each features the same 10th Anniversary Parade float:

A nice colorful map of the Magic Kingdom:

They’re almost newsprint quality paper, so it’s amazing they’ve held up so well, and haven’t really yellowed:

This is the earliest park map I’ve seen. I had no previous knowledge that there was once a Hallmark store on Main Street USA! Those were the days when there was a much wider variety of stores featuring a much wider range of products.

Which of your favorite attractions, shops, or restaurants are still in the park, and which are just a memory?

Photo tips. This guide is compliments of Polaroid

Soon, they’ll be adding a whole new park on the map. EPCOT Center!

Downtown Disney was Walt Disney World Village

The inner pages and back cover of both guides are the same, with the exception of the last page and inside back cover. This one looks at a decade of dreams coming true, while the inside back cover advertises Disney movies out at that time. Cinderella was in re-release and one of my favorites was in theaters: TRON!

The other guide features an ad for EPCOT Center!  This time, Bambi is in theaters:

They picked up one more guide while on their trip. It’s the EPCOT Center Preview Guide:

This has also been called The Opening Day Guide on some sites and it was obviously given out as a preview.

All of these wonderful items that Aunt Sandy has sent me now join the ranks of my treasured Disneyana collection!

1987 Disneyland Souvenir Guide

Guest Blogger: Nick Maglio

My Aunt Sandy has sent me more great souvenirs! Today, let’s take a look at this 1987 Disneyland Souvenir Guide. Compliments of Eastman Kodak Company:

A nice colorful fold out map of the park:

Off to look at the lands:

As of 1987, Disneyland still had Bear Country, which would become Critter Country just one year later.

Photo tips from, of course, Kodak!

The back cover features an ad for Captain EO, which opened in 1986, and played at the Kodak Magic Eye Theater. Also, it advertises two new films. Film. Remember that?

Again, these will make great additions to my Disneyana collection!

Disneyland Paris 20th Anniversary Vinylmations

GUEST BLOGGER: NICK MAGLIO

Recently, Mary, a co-worker of my wife’s, went to the Olympics in London. And then to Disneyland Paris. She asked my wife if she would like anything. My wife did some investigation, and discovered there were some 20th Anniversary Vinylmations and asked her to pick them up.

On my birthday, she presented me with 2 wrapped boxes that I immediately knew were Vinylmation, but I was completely taken by surprise by the actual items themselves! First up, let’s take a look at Donald. Donald is sporting a Sorcerer type hat, with a crescent moon adorned shirt and a tie:

The box below says, in French: ‘No returns or exchanges, or…refunded’. At least that’s what the French-to-English software I used told me.

“With Vinylmation, the imagination is without end! The Disney artists have created original designs and innovation on the basis of a character in three dimensions. This box contains one of the four figurines of the range ’20th Anniversary of Disneyland Paris’. Build your collection with your favorites. You have the choice!”

At the time of me writing this, 12.88 Euros is approximately $16 American! Kind of steep for a Vinylmation!

Nice illustration of Tinker Bell over “Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant”, or “The Castle of the Beauty Sleeping in the Wood”. Wow. French is different!

The other side features an illustration of Mickey Mouse:

And speaking of Mickey Mouse, that is the second figure I received::

I’m going to keep Donald in his box, because I really like the packaging. But I took Mickey out of his box because it was a little damaged.

Mickey here is sporting a Sorcerer hat with matching robes and tie:

I feel the back is…odd. I guess the white strip on the back of the head is the collar to his cape?

.

Interesting that the bottom of the figure is in English while the majority of the packaging is in French:

.

My wife also asked Mary to pick up any interesting items featuring her favorite character, Stitch. She bought these two awesome pins:

She also got this really great pin:

Press the button on the back…

… and Stitch’s body pops out!

The bag all the goodies came in:

Some really great gifts from a really great friend!
