Mickey Mouse as the Brave Little Tailor HAT

Guest Blogger: Nick Maglio

Today I’m sharing something from the 1996 Disneyana Convention. If you look at the picture below, I think you’ll be able to guess what it is:

I’m not a hat guy, but had to have this one, for the awesome Mickey Brave Little Tailor!

 The official Disneyana Logo

Goofy’s Hat Co.

Made in the USA! WOW!

It’s really just an awesome hat in general.

Mickey Mouse as the Brave Little Tailor MUG

GUEST BLOGGER: NICK MAGLIO

Back in the early 90’s, Disney started to hold Official Disneyana Conventions. I didn’t make it to one. I’m not sure this was a bad thing, since I heard mixed reviews on the organization of these events, and I really couldn’t afford a majority of the merchandise being offered anyway.

The one year I was disappointed I didn’t go was 1996. Each year of the convention had a theme, and 1996’s was The Brave Little Tailor, my favorite Mickey Mouse cartoon. I have shared a five other Tailor items in the past, and those can be found at the bottom of this post.

The convention was September 3 – 7th, and I had already scheduled a trip for later that month, so I could be at the park for Walt Disney World’s 25th, so I was out of luck.  Or was I? To my astonishment, there were several convention items for sale in the Magic Kingdom! I bought a few of the more affordable items, and they have been favorites for years.

Today, let’s take a look at the mug I bought way back in 1996:

The graphics and color are just beautiful, just like Princess Minnie

The giant can’t believe there were still mugs left after the convention…

…because they were limited to 2,000 pieces! Made exclusively for the Walt Disney Theme Parks and Resorts.

Ludwig von Drake Chalkboard

I bought this chalkboard because I just so happen to collect them. Funny how that works, isn’t it? It also just so happens to feature one of my favorite characters: Ludwig von Drake. It measures 23.5 inches high by 16 inches wide.

Not in the best of shape, with a few scratches, and rounded corners. But the colors are still vibrant. Plus, it features many other beloved Disney characters:

.

I’m not at all sure what year this is from, but as it is Copyright Walt Disney Productions, it was made before February 1986, and since Chip and Dale are on the board, it was made after 1943. I can’t find any information on Diamond H Brand.

If you’d like to meet Professor Drake, check out our other post here, or enter Ludwig Von Drake in the search box in the upper right corner of this blog.

I hope you enjoyed today’s post, and weren’t board. (See what I did there? Bored – board. Get it? Huh? Oh, never mind.)

Mickey Mouse as the Brave Little Tailor RECORD BOOK

GUEST BLOGGER: NICK MAGLIO

I’ve been eyeing this Mickey Mouse Brave Little Tailor record and story book from 1968 up for a while on eBay, and found it recently on a very successful trip to the Columbus Flea Market.

I felt the $5 asking price was fair, as that is comparable to what I’ve seen it go for in eBay, minus the extra added expense of shipping charges. But enough of all that, let’s take a look at the book. For those unfamiliar with the story, I will relate a very truncated version: A kingdom is being pestered by a giant, and the king offers a reward for his capture.

Mickey, a tailor, is being pestered himself, by several flies

With 2 fly swatters, Mickey dispatches the 7 pests with one blow, which he proudly announces to the people outside his window. The citizens misunderstand, assuming Mickey is talking about taking down 7 giants with one blow!

News gets back to the King, and Mickey is summoned. He discovers that the king expects him to capture just one giant, no problem for someone so brave. He offers the hand of Princess Minnie in return.

Mickey finds the giant, and through ingenuity and tailoring, ties things up nicely

To celebrate, the King decides to hold a big carnival, and the giant provides the wind power to turn the carousel!

A happy ending for all. But I always wondered what the final fate of the giant was

Someone got creative with the coloring on the last page here. The record itself is in perfect condition.

Released by Disneyland Records

I hope you’ve enjoyed our story time. Please check the search box for more Brave Little Tailor items.

Dreamfinder and Figment Vinylmation Pins

GUEST BLOGGER: NICK MAGLIO

I recently received a very nice gift from Lee, the founder of the wonderful blog you are viewing at this very moment. He bought it while on a Disney Store Road Trip.

It is a Vinylmation pin of a beloved character, one that is greatly missed from the original Journey Into Imagination attraction at Epcot: Dreamfinder.

This prompted me to find his little purple friend Figment! I picked him up on eBay:

Thank you very much to a great guy: Lee!

Mickey Mouse Toothbrush Holder

GUEST BLOGGER: GAYLIN

This toothbrush holder was a gift from a friend, years ago. I brought it home and put it in my bathroom with my one lonely toothbrush in it.

I decided it looked a little sad so I moved it into the living room and now use it as a pen holder. It is ceramic and you can tell that it is slightly imperfect, which I kind of like. It gives it less of a factory made feel. And see, it can hold 4 toothbrushes:

And if you use it for toothbrushes, it has a plug so it can be rinsed out. It is made by Disney and you can tell by the slightly messy paint job and the sticker, that it is hand painted.

Very plain back. Flat so it can fit flush to the wall

And here it is with its collection of Disney pens: 2 resort pens, one dollar store feather pen and one pencil from the Animal Kingdom. This pencil is made with recycled jeans!

There is no way I’d just put normal pencils in this. It just has to be Disney!

Disney World’s 25th Anniversary Passport

This “Remember the Magic!” passport, like the Epcot version, measures 5 1/2 by 3 3/4 inches:

Passport

The first page tells you what the passport is all about:

“Welcome to the 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Walt Disney World Resort! It’s a big year of celebration with festivities, parades, and special events continuing through 1997. While at the Magic Kingdom, guests can validate their passports at 8 key park locations (locations are identified on each of the pages). The passport is also packed full of great Magic Kingdom trivia. See how much you know!”

The next couple of pages tell some of the awesome events and parades you’ll experience on your 25th Anniversary visit. Remember the Castle Cake?

Then the trivia begins! Some of the questions are hard! See how many you can answer. I’ve included the answer key at the end.

The biggest problem I had with the whole thing, and an issue they may not have foreseen, was the bleeding through of the stamps to the opposite page.

Well before the Pirates movies, this book paid homage to one of the most popular Magic Kingdom rides, the only ride to get this honor.

How many did you get right?

Epcot Center Passport

GUEST BLOGGER: NICK MAGLIO

I recently found a box containing several Walt Disney World items from the early to mid 90’s, including 2 passports. In this post, we’ll look at the older of the 2, dating from 1994.

This Epcot Center passport came in a kit with a button and stickers that you’ll see throughout the book. Interestingly, that was the year Epcot Center became Epcot ’94.

A fun front cover. The passport measures 5 1/2 inches by 3 3/4 inches, a little larger than my actual passport.

Passport 1

Not a very exciting back cover

Passport 2

A look at the World, and the countries we’ll visit/have visited on our journey around World Showcase:

Each country had a stamp, and a Cast Member from that country would write a nice message in their native language.

The stickers are lovely scenes you’ll see in each pavilion, as well as the flag and a map

I have no idea what most of these say!

The stickers are lovely scenes you’ll see in each pavilion, as well as the flag and a map

The countries in the 1st half of the book are not in order of the pavilions you’ll encounter if you were to start going around World Showcase starting in Mexico, but does go in order starting with the United States.

Last, but certainly not least, we have Canada:

I’m not sure if they still sell these kits, but I’ll be sure to check on our next trip to the World.

World Showcase International Coins

Today we share a unique item from Epcot: the World Showcase International Coins set. This coin set dates back to the early 90’s when Epcot was still Epcot Center:

I’m not sure if they still sell these sets today, but doing a Google search, several different variants can be found.

Each coin is uncirculated. I can’t recall what this set sold for, but I’m sure it was reasonable. And it is a great collectible from an earlier era of Epcot.

Mickey Mouse Kitchen Accessories

GUEST BLOGGER: GAYLIN

I love to find a little Disney everywhere I can. It does make me happy to open the utensil drawer in the kitchen and voila: Practical, happy, Mickey utensils!

While all of these things are readily available at the theme parks and may not be particularly collectible, I enjoy using them and having Disney in my everyday life while I am making food in my kitchen.

This is a slightly blurry photo of all my kitchen items:

I bought this ice cream scoop to scoop ice cream. I use it to scoop up pancake batter instead!

When it’s pizza time, this next item comes in really handy. I wasn’t actually expecting it to work well but it has quite a sharp edge and definitely gets the job done:

This is a fridge magnet that I refer to at least once a week. With Canadian cookbooks and recipes online being in metric and American cookbooks and online references being in Imperial measurements, this becomes a great addition to the other Disney fridge magnets:

I admit, I don’t use this tea towel very often, they come in a pack of 2 and the other one has a stain on it so I use it most often and leave this one all pretty and unstained (what a dork!)

I love these napkins. I haven’t even opened the package yet because I still have a pile of those brown napkins from the counter service restaurants at WDW to last me until my next trip. Again, I am a Disney dork, as I am waiting for a really special occasion to break out the ‘good napkins’.

I love what is termed a ‘scattered Mickey’. That is what is encapsulated in this spatula. The Mickey head, gloves, shorts and shoes. This is the one item that people always comment on when I am cooking for them: “You have a Mickey spatula?” Of course I do!

And finally scattered Mickey Salt ‘N Pepper shakers. I love these and at one time thought I would collect S&P shakers but it turns out I am too practical. I only need and use one set of shakers so the collection never happened.

I hope you enjoyed my tour of Disney in the kitchen and can’t help but wonder: How much Mickey do you cook with?
