Mickey Mouse ‘Born to Ride’ Ornament by Hallmark

Tin Toys have always been popular and are among the most collectible, and expensive, toys out there. Unfortunately, I don’t have any original tin toys in my collection, but I do like to add a few reproductions, like this one:

New stuff 018     New stuff 019

Hallmark releases new ornaments each year and many of them make great collectibles for year-round display. This particular one is free-standing and so is not limited to only being hung.

Here we see Mickey with his vintage leather helmet and flowing scarf ready to hit the open road! With training wheels. But… we’ll overlook that for now.

Well, we conclude with that parting shot of Mickey driving off across the rolling pillows of my sofa. Born to Ride… Born to be Wild!

Nostalgia Digest: Celebrating the Golden Age of Entertainment

If you have been visiting my blogs for any amount of time, you know that I not only love Disney, but so much more. I’m into silent movies, old radio shows, vintage toys and collectibles, classic television, musicals… oh, the list just goes on and on!

So when I found this little digest at my local Chapters store, I was intrigued, and it was a no-brainer buy for this nostalgia nut:

New stuff 012

They had me at the cover picture of Clayton Moore as The Lone Ranger

Nostalgia Digest is published in Chicago and is a quarterly journal. It has about 65 pages but is a black and white publication. Which is appropriate, given the subject matter. What really caught my attention though was the fact that it is linked to an actual modern radio station that still broadcasts old radio shows and talk shows about same! The call letters are WDCB 90.9 FM or you can pick it up on the internet at www.wdcb.org which boasts a Jazz and Blues format.

But back to the digest:

New stuff 013

Contents of the Autumn 2014 Issue

Being as this is primarily a blog about my love of all-things Disney, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Disney connection in this digest. Author Jim Dohren writes about growing up with those great record-readers we all listened to and loved. And of course, Disney was one of the main users of this medium to reach an audience:

New stuff 016

New stuff 017

I have many of these Record-Readers in my collection

I’m so impressed with this publication (and that it still is a publication, and not a digital offering) that I just have to recommend it too any fan of nostalgia programming! You can pick up individual issues for just $4.50 US or get a yearly subscription delivered to your door for $17.00 US or two years for just $30.00 US. Back issues are also available.

Check it out! You’ll be glad you did.

Disney Plush Bears – Big Al and Br’er Bear

Disney has many a famous bear: Humphrey. Big Al. Br’er Bear. And many others whose names escape me at the moment. Over the last month, I’ve been following a pair of plush bears on Kijiji but thought the price was too high. After a week the price dropped and I make an offer which was declined. Today I purchased them for $10 under my former offer.

Life is good!

New stuff 007     New stuff 008

Big Al from the Country Bear Jamboree

Big Al is my favorite Disney bear! His so-ugly-its-cute look and hilarious rendition of Blood on the Saddle gets me every time. This plush is about 16″ tall and all original and is branded for both Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Next is a bear from my favorite WDW/DL attraction Splash Mountain:

New stuff 001

B R’ E R     B E A R

When is a villain not a villain? When he is just a big guy who wants a good meal! Yes, Br’er Bear may not be too smart, but he’s not evil either, which makes him a very endearing character.

New stuff 002     New stuff 006

Again, this plush is at least 16″ tall

New stuff 003

Official Song of the South merchandise (Shhhhh! It doesn’t exist)

New stuff 004     New stuff 005

Although not dated here, I believe this plush is from the 1990’s

So, is your favorite bear a Park Rangers worst headache? Or a country hic with a big club? Or a singing sour puss?

Jim Henson’s Muppets – Sour Puckers Tin

Welcome to the wonderful and oft-times dangerous world of “Muppet Labs: Where the future is being made… today!” Dr. Bunsen Honeydew PhD. Esq. and his frightful (or frightened) assistant Beaker have really cooked up something good for us today.

After only three explosions and two visits to intensive care for Beaker, we present:

001

Tasty Tangy Citrus

Yes, folks, Beaker has sucked and puckered his sour way through dozens of tins, and a few candies, to ensure that these little beauties are safe for your consumption. Beaker was asked to comment on the flavour and was heard to say: “Mee Mee (bleah) Mee!” We’re taking that as a positive endorsement.

So if you’re looking for a sour treat and the thrill of a (likely short) lifetime, simply purchase your own tin of Muppets Sour Puckers Tangy Citrus candy.

It was an honor knowing you!

Disney’s Mickey Express Merry Miniatures Train Set

Hallmark has had some really great Disney items over the years. Best known for their holiday ornaments, many might not realize what other delights have crept onto this retail store’s shelves.

Things like this Mickey Express Merry Miniatures train set:

Toy Train 004

All Aboard!

I found this mini train set at a flea market for only $8 CAN. The complete set contained just these five pieces: Mickey’s Locomotive; Pluto’s Coal Car; Minnie’s Baggage Car; Donald’s Passenger Car; and Goofy’s Caboose. I found this store display at a Hallmark ornament show:

Mickey Express Display

Here is the original packaging:

Merry Miniatures

Toy Train 005

Walt would be proud!

Toy Train 006

Toy Train 007 Toy Train 008 Toy Train 009

Goof on a caboose on the loose!

Toy Train 010

1998 Disney/Hallmark Cards Inc.

These little rail cars range from 1 1/4″ to 1 1/2″ high to almost 2″ long, but not quite.

16 years old and still having fun! The connection between Walt and trains has been beaten to death and needs no more reiteration from me. But I think we can all agree that seeing Mickey in an engineers outfit atop an engine, just like his papa Walt, brings a wave of nostalgia to the heart!

Jelly Belly Candy Yummy Yummy Too

I was visiting family while out-of-town, which means opportunities to scavenge in new places for Disney-related items. I was pleased to find this additional bag of candy to match some that I had previously purchased closer to home:

Toy Train 002

See Mickey and Donald versions with this link

With flavors like Orange Sherbert, Strawberry Banana, and Pineapple Pear Smoothie, how can you go wrong?

Toy Train 003

And once again: Gluten-free!

To conclude, I leave you with the immortal words of the Jelly Bean: Get Real. Get Jelly Belly!

Jelly Belly Candy Yummy Yummy

Who likes candy? OK, silly question. Who likes jelly beans? OK, still silly. Who likes Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck? OK, now we’re getting ridiculous!

OK, who would like all of these things put together? Well, wish no more:

Scrncap12

The Original Gourmet Jelly Bean

Scrncap13    Even the sides of the packaging is cool!

Scrncap15

Good ingredients and Gluten-free!

We were browsing in a local Home Sense where my wife found several gluten-free items. But as I was walking through the impulse-buy aisle to the checkout (curse you, Home Sense!) I was successfully tempted by these Special Edition Jelly Belly delights. I really didn’t stand a chance: Jelly beans, Disney characters, and a Special Edition package!

Scrncap16

In conclusion: They are delicious!

Censorship in Movies- Warner Bros. vs Disney Movies

Oh, I just hate it when another studio one-ups my favorite studio, Disney ! But credit where credit is due. It goes to the Warner Brothers Studio for releasing a controversial film. And how did they manage such a tricky and potentially explosive feat and preserve a piece of cinematic history?

By using four title cards. My question: Why couldn’t Disney do this with Song of the South?

But first, the Warner Bros. movie: Irving Berlin’s This Is the Army (from 1943)

Scrncap1

And yes, that’s a very young Lt. Ronald Reagan, actually in the army during production

Scrncap11

Reagan again on the left with George Murphy on the right, playing his father

This film was called “buoyant, captivating, as American as hot dogs or the Bill of Rights” by Theodore Strauss of The New York Times. He left out racist and highly offensive. Or maybe he missed this part of the picture:

Scrncap7

A Minstrel from a number with white actors in blackface

But with Hollywood, one is never enough, so why not fill the entire stage with highly offensive stereotypes:

Scrncap9

Yes, that’s an enormous banjo in the background

If five Minstrels in the background weren’t enough, how about twelve in the foreground dancing and singing ‘Mammy’ with another twelve guys dressed in blackfaced-drag with an additional six banjo-playing Minstrels, three to a side? If only they could have worked in a plate of fried chicken and collard greens somehow.

There were actual African-American singers/dancers in this picture, but they were used in a typically exaggerated way for comic relief. However, a Fun Fact: The Army was still segregated at this time (WWII) and so the production of this film, with a predominantly all-army cast, was the only integrated deployment of men during the war.

So, again, how did Warner Bros. manage to get this film released in 2014 on DVD? Answer:

T I T L E     C A R D S

Scrncap3

 Scrncap4

So it made a lot of money for charity. But still unacceptable.

Scrncap5

Open acknowledgment of the mistaken views held at the time.

Scrncap6

Point: Does banning movies with this stuff in them mean the stuff never happened?

Blackface Minstrelsy has a long history and is not practiced today, even in jest. But it is a large part of American history and won’t go away simply by burying movies that contain sequences depicting it.

With that in mind, couldn’t Disney place similar Title Cards at the beginning of a DVD release of Song of the South and let the scenes depicting the attitudes of the freed slaves and their interaction with former masters speak for themselves, also speak to the history of the period, and allow such scenes to “remind all how far we have come as a nation”, or nations?

I’ll leave this thought here and end this post on a lighter note. Did you know that The Skipper’s dad was in this movie too? Yup, Alan Hale Sr. played a key role in many movies long before his son, Alan Hale Jr., became Gilligan’s buddy:

Review: Disney Fantasia – Music Evolved

Fantasia Game cover

Rated for Everyone 10+

Publisher: Disney Interactive

Platforms: Xbox One & Kinect for Xbox 360

Players: Multiplayer for up to TWO local players

Available: October 21, 2014

Price: $59.99 for Xbox One and $49.99 for Kinect for Xbox 360

O V E R V I E W

I recently received an invitation to review a new gaming experience designed for the Xbox 360 platform with Kinect capability. With this game you become an apprentice of the great Yen Sid (diS neY spelled backwards) as you learn to create and conduct the magic of music!

This new game was designed by Harmonix, critically acclaimed creators of Rock Band and Dance Central and the world’s leading music and motion gaming studio.

Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved is a breakthrough musical motion video game inspired by Disney’s classic animated film Fantasia. In the game, players enter the many realms of Fantasia and learn to manipulate music spanning all genres and eras, including classics from the original film and over 30 hit artist selections. You can view the complete song list on the official Disney site and order your copy.

R E V I E W

Yep, you might want to limber up a bit before trying this game! About an hour in, you’ll be waving your arms like a real orchestra conductor on a mission, which is the part you are playing. The narrator draws you in and introduces you to Yen Sid who gives you your challenges. Each level has a goal you must reach to continue.

First, I was off to The Shoal to earn a star to put on my hat (you remember the blue hat that Mickey Mouse wore in his famous Fantasia role?) Message in a Bottle by The Police was my first conducting job. Regata de Blanc was the first album I ever bought, so this was a real geek moment for me!

Scrncap1

Here, I reached my goal and achieved a 90% rating for accuracy!

Scrncap3

You can also set records, or streaks, for most correct moves in succession

One star down and it was off to The Hollow to earn another star:

Scrncap2

Fantasia T-shirt

Did I mention I also received this cool LE t-shirt depicting the CandelabraElk from The Hollow?

After another successful round and my second star for my hat, it was off to The Nation and then The Press to earn my last two stars. My accuracy dropped from 90% to 76% as the levels got harder. So although the game seems to start off easy, it quickly toughens up! Next it was off to Space to collect a moon to complete my hat. With the hat completed, I unlocked a new level of play and… well, I’ll let you play the game to find out what came next!

C O N C L U S I O N

After about an hour, as I said above, you really do start to feel like a conductor. The arm movements are authentic and you begin to feel the music and forget the ‘game’. The banter of the narrator is amusing and the worlds you later encounter are awesome!

Scrncap4

Anyone for a visit to The Haven?

I wasn’t too sure of what to expect from this release other than it would involve music, but Disney and Harmonix have captured the magic and wonder of the original Fantasia film and put it on your gaming console.

R A T I N G

I can’t rate the whole game yet as I haven’t had the time to fully explore every world and each and every feature, but at this point I’d definitely say it’s well worth a look. I’d give it an initial 4+ out of 5 stars with the expectation that the rating will go higher as I venture further into Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved.
