People: Disney Legend Floyd Norman

I’d like to introduce you to:

Floyd Norman

MrFunsBlog

Much has been written about animation in the early days being a man’s world, with women being relegated to the ink and paint departments or other ‘secondary’ disciplines. This, as in most other professions, has changed. But we could go back again to the early days of animation and say that it was also a largely white world. This too has changed.

Some Disney detractors have used such observations to label Walt anti-semitic or racist, or whatever other derogatory label would get them the most publicity for their publications. But in all fairness (?) it should be mentioned that women and minorities didn’t enjoy the same opportunities as white males in North America in the early days and the Walt Disney Studio was hardly unique in its employee demographics.

But I don’t want to turn this article into a soap box sermon just because the Disney Legend I’m highlighting just happens to be an African-American. However, the points I’ve shared thus far are a part of established history and so do become a part of Floyd Norman’s life story. He was and is the first black animator at the Walt Disney Studios.

Please join me in the hope that things like that will no longer be relevent or worthy of mention as our world becomes more universal and accepting!

So now I’d like to let the man himself tell you…

Who the hell is Floyd Norman?

I began my career at the Walt Disney Studios many years ago and I’ve worked on more animated feature films and television shows than I can remember. What’s really cool however, are the awesome people I’ve known and worked with throughout my career at Walt’s magic factory. It’s truly a who’s who of animation and it includes Walt’s famous “Nine Old Men” as well as the top story men who created the Disney classics. It was an amazing mentoring opportunity as well as a master class in Disney animation. My career eventually spanned several decades and I even witnessed the arrival of the “young turks” who would take the torch passed to them by the Disney Masters.

My first animated feature film was Walt’s masterpiece, “Sleeping Beauty” which wrapped in 1958 and ushered in the Old Maestro’s final decade. In 1966 I was blessed with the opportunity to work with Walt Disney on his final animated film, The Jungle Book. I capped off my career in 1999 with the Pixar production of “Monster’s Inc.” and I reluctantly “retired” from animation in the year 2001. However, I never retired from cartoon making. Since that time I’ve worked on several feature and television productions for various studios and I continue doing so even today. I’ve never considered myself top in my class and I certainly don’t buy into the “Disney Legend” thing. There are far too many forgotten talents out there that continue to go unrecognized. So, what’s my secret, you ask? It’s easy, really. I simply won’t stop working. Recently, I’ve been kept busy on various projects including Reel FX’s “Free Birds,” Cartoon Network’s “Annoying Orange” and some cool new projects for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Italic text and picture from Mr. Fun’s Blog

I bolded the type above because it caught my eye and sensibilities. There are many underrated contributors behind all of our favorite Disney Classics and we should appreciate them as much as we do our heroes. It’s nice to see someone who has certainly stood out give a shout-out to everyone else! Sorry Floyd, but that makes your Disney Legend title well-earned to me!

Behind every Disney Legend is a rich history and an interesting story to tell. Please check out his blog and be sure to immerse yourself in the creativity of a man who always seems to be smiling. Obviously he’s up to something, and I think you owe it to yourself to find out what! You may find clues at AFROKIDS.com

Oh, and by the way Floyd, Ward Kimbal called and he wants his glasses back! (Kidding!)

Found Disney: Hidden Mickey Door Handle

With a door like this, I’d push my way through for sure!

Hollywood 24 +

From the Walk of Fame to the Sodas of Yum

You can see the streets of Hollywood in the reflections on this door to Disney’s Soda Fountain and Studio Store just left of the El Capitan Theatre. Hmmm, I wonder if I could put Mickey door knobs in my house?

Our Voyage to Find Nemo in Disneyland

In January of 2013 we took our first ever (and only, at this point) trip to Disneyland. The weather was cold and wet but we enjoyed ourselves anyway! On one of the rare sunny days we decided to continue the wet theme by taking an undersea voyage on a classic attraction:

Disneyland 399

Not the big red thing, the smaller yellow thing below it

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is a reworking of the old North Pole Expedition (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Voyage in WDW) and one of my favorite attractions. John Lasseter oversaw the bringing back of this great ride and Disney pumped millions into making it perfect.

Disneyland 410

Our voyage would be aboard the Neptune

Disneyland 412

I wonder what happens if you press the BIG red button?

Disneyland 414     Disneyland 416

Boarding is slow, yielding long wait times, but worth it!

Disneyland 447

And away we go around the Lagoon

Disneyland 417 Disneyland 425

Submerging to find the beauty below

This attraction is just coming out of refurbishment. Some sites claimed, or hypothesized, that Disney was going to close this attraction because it was to expensive, with long wait times. I never believed this to be a real possibility due to the sheer amount of money that was pumped into it.

I’m glad it’s still here and prettier than ever!

Disney’s Frozen Zanai Chocolate Eggs

If you watched the movie Frozen closely, you may have gotten the hint that Elsa and Anna love chocolate. So I guess it’s appropriate that Zanai has released a set of miniature figurines in their signature chocolate eggs:

Scrncap1     Scrncap2

They’re smiling because… they love chocolate!

But as we all know, it’s what’s inside that really counts, so:

Scrncap3

Does one of the Love Experts love chocolate too?

This set contains every main character from the movie, and in the case of the Princesses, two costume variations each to make things interesting. Or… to make you buy more chocolate eggs to get the complete set!

Scrncap5

Three almost identical Rock Trolls? Really?

Scrncap4     Scrncap8

Slighty different makes all the difference. Right. And my wife married a fixer upper. Wait…

Of course, the main character that everyone is ga-ga over is Elsa, and I got her in her Ice Dress costume:

Scrncap6

Lastly, from the four eggs I bought for the purpose of this post, I got what might arguably be everyone’s favorite character from the movie Frozen:

Scrncap7

OLAF

Although funny at times, this character I just didn’t get. It’s never explained why Elsa had the power to unknowingly create life from snow, and why Olaf ended up one of the by-products of Elsa’s snowy tantrum. Also, he seems to have the memories of the girls earlier playtime when he states that he loves ‘warm hugs’.

For me, Olaf is just one of the many plot holes in the movie Frozen. But fortunately I like chocolate, so buying these Zanai eggs was no hardship! Although I wish I had gotten Marshmallow the Snow Monster instead of two Rock Trolls.

I have to admit, I am one of the (hopefully many) who just didn’t like this film. I can’t ratify any of the decisions the parents made, or Elsa’s decision to continue to honor those decisions, or her actions after her Coronation (trying to kill her sister using an ice monster, anyone?) Oh well, in the end, I guess I’ll just have to ‘let it go!’

Arriving at Disney’s Magic Kingdom

How many ways can you arrive at Walt Disney World? Well, if you’re visiting The Magic Kingdom, there’s four. You can drive, or you can walk, or:

45+

…you can arrive by monorail or boat

Now, the train station is in the background of this picture, but you can’t arrive at the MK by train. You have to enter the park first and then board the train, so that doesn’t count!

Bonus points for finding Pirate Mickey in the above picture!

Disney’s Polynesian Resort Waterfall

Last time I heard, the inside waterfall at the Polynesian Resort is going to be, or is already, gone. Has anyone been there recently and know if this is true?

8+

I wonder if that would also mean the removal of the outdoor water space that is just down and to the right as you exit the monorail:

7+

Are these two areas fed from the same source, or connected?

I did notice some changes the last time I was there and so hope that the Imagineers will keep at least some of these great water features!

How about you?

Disney-themed Character Viewfinders Fast Food Giveaways

Once upon a time, in a marketing deal long long ago, two big companies decided to team up to give the world some of the greatest little toys in the history of promotional giveaways. Disney and McDonald’s restaurants no longer work together, but what they left behind still brings joy to perusers of yard sale tables and collectible shops alike!

As an example, I bring you seven Character Viewers based on Disneyland attractions and shows:

Blurry because I had a little too much grog before taking the picture

This slide shows a staged scene from a show that had live actors portraying a battle between Captain Hook and his pirates and Peter Pan. You can see a short snippet of it in this YouTube video.

King Louie as a Captain on the Jungle Cruise. Nuff said.

McD Toys Disneyland MK 1 +

The Lion King Celebration was a parade based on the animated film The Lion King. It was designed to tell the story of Simba as if it were a tale passed down in Africa for generations. Its parade featured six floats designed around different aspects of Africa, dancers dressed in animal costumes and a Pride Rock float featuring Simba. The parade ran at Disneyland from June 1, 1994 to June 1, 1997, after which four of the floats were moved to Disney’s Animal Kingdom for the Festival of the Lion King show.

This slide likely shows a staged segment of the parade that wasn’t necessarily in the actual procession. This parade replaced the Aladdin’s Royal Caravan and then was itself replaced by Hercules’ Victory Parade.

Mickey and Space Mountain: Great Combination!

When I first saw Winnie the Pooh riding a train, I was expecting a slide showing the Disneyland Railroad. But instead I was treated to this great shot of The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! So… did Pooh move from the 100-acre wood to the wildest mountain range of the old west?

The ultimate Toontown!

Now that Walt Disney World’s Toontown is gone, will Disneyland’s version soon suffer the same fate? As changes continue to come and expansion space becomes harder to find, it may be a good idea to visit this great area as soon as possible! Here is a link to Disney Dose that covers the attractions and postulates on the future of Toontown.

And now I’ve left my favorite to the last:

McD Toys Disneyland SM 1 +

Splash Mountain

This slide shows the original configuration for the logs, with side-by-side seating. Interestingly, Br’er Bear seems to have thought ahead and predicted the change to a one-behind-the-other configuration. Here are Karen and I ‘enjoying’ our first plummet down the mountain:

Disneyland 831

So although we can’t go to our favorite Fast Food place and walk out with a Disney toy anymore, with the tens of thousands of Disney-related toys produced between 1988 and 2007, we can always check out eBay for those must-haves!

Check out the link for everything you didn’t want to know about the McDonald’s Happy Meal and the toys that came with them.

Goodbye to Duffy, the Disney Bear No-one Loves

Poor Duffy! Outside of Japan, he just didn’t get the love that almost automatically goes to other Disney characters. When we were last at Disney California Adventure, we stopped and took the time to pose with this neglected meet-and-greet character.

But we didn’t have to wait in line. In fact, we were the only people even interested in posing with him. Every time we went by, this is what we saw:

CA 234

He stands alone

I decided to watch for a while and see if it was just a lull in the crowds, but eventually, Duffy just went inside the store and sat down on a box… and waited.

I always feel sorry for the CM in the suit when the hard work and sweat aren’t appreciated. So I’d like to say thank you to ‘Duffy’ for making a fuss over us!

CA 237

The rumor is that Duffy has to go to make money available to pay for the new Oswald meet-and-greet coming soon to the Disneyland Resort. I’m thrilled that Oswald is coming, but still feel it’s a shame that Duffy will become a casualty.

Will you miss Duffy, the Disney Bear?

100 Years of Magic – WDW Resort Vacation Planning Video

100 Years of Magic

Walt Disney World Resort Vacation Planning Video

I love these planning videos as they comprise a virtual time capsule of my favorite Disney parks! It’s always fun to see what was new and how Disney was promoting things ‘back then.’

100 Years of Magic VHS 046

Classic VHS magic!

In 2001, Disney decided to celebrate Walt Disney’s 100th Birthday (December 5th, 1901) and the legacy of magic he left for us all. The VHS video gave a sneak peek of everything that was happening in all four Theme Parks and was designed to help in the planning of a vacation that would be remembered forever!

Here are the pamphlets included with the VHS tape:

100 Years of Magic VHS 049

100 Years of Magic VHS 050 100 Years of Magic VHS 051 100 Years of Magic VHS 052 100 Years of Magic VHS 053

Front and back of two advertisements

Of course, this promotional video had appearances by several Cast Members and the obligatory testimonials from over-excited Guests. But one CM stood out to me:

100 Years of Magic VHS 011

Jim Korkis: Disney Historian

You may know Jim from his books that are now published by Theme Park Press. I did a review of some of his books, my favorite being Who’s Afraid of the Song of the South, a great read about some of the more controversial moments in Disney history. My friend and fellow blogger, Nick Maglio, got to meet Jim while on vacation at WDW and interviewed him for his blog Disney Musings. You can read Part One, Part Two, and Part Three by clicking the links.

OK, that’s enough links for one post! Let’s get back to the planning video.

So, what was new for 2001? How about the hat everyone loves to hate:

100 Years of Magic VHS 013

I wonder if we can blame Jim for this one?

Also new over at Disney Studios was the Movie Stars and Motor Cars Parade. Here is a shot from the video showing some concept drawings:

100 Years of Magic VHS 014

OK, Jim, this was a good one!

Over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, another new parade called Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade was set to entertain, and here is Jim beside another concept sketch showing Mickey atop the key float:

100 Years of Magic VHS 021

There was also a cool pin that would flash in conjunction with one of the parades. Here it is on Jim Korkis as he demonstrates it for us:

100 Years of Magic VHS 027

100 Years of Magic VHS 028    100 Years of Magic VHS 029

And you thought the flashing Mickey Ears were a new idea!

One last new thing to share with you is something known as Disney FastPass. The video had a CM explaining this great new feature to a guest, complete with riveting demonstration of how to work the machine:

100 Years of Magic VHS 034

I wonder if anyone ever got the hang of these things?

Over all it was a fun video with some great pamphlets. And although I didn’t really just get back from Walt Disney World, by watching this Vacation Planner video, it feels like I did!

Check out the official Disney site that promoted this event called 100 Years of Magic.

Vintage Metal Disney Trays

I noticed recently that Disney is re-releasing these black trays. But I’ve managed to find three original versions:

Tin Plate California +

Competitors Knott’s Berry Farm and Marineland are also listed

Tin Plate Florida 1+     Tin Plate Florida 2 +

Two versions

The Florida Project was a little more generous in sharing the spotlight with competitors by mentioning Cape Kennedy, Weeki Wachee Springs, Marineland, and both Busch and Cypress Gardens. Never Universal Studios though!

I love to find products that are branded for both Parks:

Tin Plate Disneyland +     Tin Plate WDW +

Same Mouse. Same product. Different Parks.

Do you like to collect similar products from both Parks, or do you stick with the Park of your heart?
