Our Teddy Bear ‘Son’ Heb Wearing a Baymax T-Shirt

Karen and I don’t have any children. Well, no real children. But we do have two teddy bears that we have adopted. One is called Heb, our oldest, and the youngest is Goober. Our parents consider them their grandchildren and we have them sitting around our home.

On our recent vacation we stopped at a Disney Store in Miami and found an adorable little t-shirt featuring Baymax from Big Hero 6. We didn’t know which of our ‘sons’ it would fit, so had to wait until we got home to see who would get the gift. Heb is the lucky one:

Funny story: To discourage my wife from wanting children, I told her that if we had a boy, I would call him Hebrew, or Heb for short. If it were a girl, she would be called Greek or Aramaic. If you’re a Bible reader, you likely know that these are the three original languages that the Bible was written in. So in my defense, I chose Biblical names!

So far… no ‘real’ children. Come on guys, you’re jealous you didn’t think of it!

What? Not cute enough for ya?

First Disney Cruise – Day Two

Day Two started with breakfast at Triton’s:

Disney Cruise Vacation 080

Being as Karen has a gluten allergy, our server on night one was supposed to take her order for the following day to speed up serving times and make sure her dietary needs were met. We were unaware that this was to be done and so when it was not done we didn’t think to ask. And so we had to go back to the restaurant, and waste more of our vacation time, to place Day Two’s menu orders.

First was breakfast. Being as Karen can’t eat at the Beach Blanket Buffet due to cross-contamination, her only breakfast option is to have a sit-down meal at Triton’s. So we arrived at 9am. Karen had gluten-free waffles, eggs, and bacon which she enjoyed immensely! I had Eggs Benedict which was also amazing. But again, this sitting used up a full hour and a half leaving us just one and half hours until our noon sitting for lunch!

And this is where it all went south again. Karen was hoping to attend the Port and Shopping Talk in the Buena Vista Theatre at 1 pm, but by 12:45, her food had still not come. After mentioning our time constraint to the server, he brought Karen’s meal and mine came as well. Karen ordered a hamburger with a gluten-free bun and fries. When it came there was no patty in the bun. Now it was 12:50 pm and she had to leave. The head waiter came and had the patty delivered, the whole meal packed up, and assigned an escort to carry it for her to the Buena Vista Theatre where she had to eat it while trying to listen to the presentation. Not cool!

On-deck views, no blue sky in sight

Determined to soldier on, we met at 2pm in the Walt Disney Theatre for a viewing of Big Hero 6 and then it was off to the Art of The Theme Show Tour which started just outside the Palo restaurant on deck 9.

Disney Cruise Vacation 052     Disney Cruise Vacation 063

This was a great one-hour walking tour of the ship with a guide who pointed out the theming details throughout the ship. There were no backstage portions, which was disappointing, but understandable. I’ll steer the ship next time!

Points from the tour:

  • All bathroom signs throughout the ship feature gentlemen and ladies, not the usual men and women, as above. This is because the ship is supposed to be a grand sailing vessel from the turn of the last century, like the Queen Mary, when the elite traveled by sea in elegance. The sign above has the standard men and women symbols because it is along the Route 66 themed ‘road’.
  • Did you know that most cruise ships have 10 different patterns of carpet? The Disney Wonder has over 100!
  • The Disney Magic was the first Disney Cruise Ship and was built in two halves and then welded together. It has a weld running from top to bottom amidships. The Disney Wonder was built in one piece, but has a fake weld in the same spot as the Magic, to make them the perfect pair!

If you want to know more… take the tour!

Disney Cruise Vacation 027     Disney Cruise Vacation 028

Just to prove we were on the cruise!

We had a little over an hour to kill before the next show we wanted to see, so took some time to tour the ship and take more photographs, like the ones above. But 6:15 pm rolled around and it was time to revisit the Walt Disney Theatre for the comedy and ventriloquism of Michael Harrison. He got off to a rocky start but recovered with his closing act of using a real boy as a dummy. This… was… hilarious! But I’d still have to give him a 6 out of 10.

Once again we headed to our 8:15 pm dining rotation, this time at Parrot Cay:

Disney Cruise Vacation 085

Disney Cruise Vacation 086

The decor here was very Caribbean and nice, but again, the food underwhelmed both of us. Understandably, by now you’re probably thinking the problem is with us, but the others at our table weren’t enjoying their meals either. As frequent Disney cruisers, they said our waiter was one of the worst they’d had, and the tastes of most of the appetizers and main courses weren’t as good as on other cruises.

But this is where our trip truly became a nightmare. We both began to feel what we assumed was sea sickness. The boat was rocking more than usual, and our table was against the outside wall of the ship, so we naturally felt the up and down rolling of the ship quite a lot. Before we could even finish our meals, we had to leave. We felt so bad that we thought we should visit the medical facilities on Deck One. We asked a Crew Member how to get there and he gave us directions. We got lost and asked two more Crew Members, and eventually arrived at our destination… only to find it closed. A fact all three Crew Members we asked for directions failed to tell us.

By this time we are very close to decorating the walls in a very inappropriate way and are hurrying to reach our cabin five decks up. We had to stop for a bathroom break en route and I ultimately arrived at our stateroom first, just in time to deposit everything I’d eaten and drank in the last two days in every available receptacle. Burning up now, I changed into my jammies and hit the bed to die. Karen arrived 20 minutes later and repeated my performance. From 10:30 pm until 9 am the next morning, we took turns keeping the neighbors up every half hour on the half hour.

So we missed the Pirates in the Caribbean Party! and the fireworks. But that wasn’t all we were going to miss as the next day was only going to get worse!

First Disney Cruise – Day One

If you love Disney, you probably have a Disney Bucket List. A list of Disney-related things and places that you want to experience. For us, first on our list was a couples trip to Walt Disney World, and that was checked off in 2007. Next was Disneyland, and that was checked off in 2012. Both of these experiences were amazing!

Next on the list was a Disney Cruise, and we just returned from our first one this past Thursday. So this too has now been crossed off the Disney Bucket List. Unfortunately, this was not an amazing experience. We took a 5-night Caribbean cruise aboard the Disney Wonder and probably had one of the worst vacations of our lives!

To be fair, we did book on the off-season, so the bad weather we experienced couldn’t be blamed on Disney. And we did get sick, which is always a danger when traveling. But even putting these things aside, the cruise was substandard. But I’m getting ahead of myself! Let’s start at the beginning of Day One:

Scrncap1

Our first glimpse of the Disney Wonder

We had a great flight on JetBlue out of Buffalo and a seamless transfer from the Orlando Airport to our Hertz rental car. From there it was a quick visit to Downtown Disney for some food and shopping and then off to the house of Karen’s parents for the night. We got up well refreshed the next morning, the morning of our cruise departure, and drove to Miami. We deposited the rental car at the Hertz depot and were driven to the Miami Port (see picture above). We were on time for our 3pm boarding and started the exciting walk to the ship:

This is when it became real!

We were announced as we entered on deck 4 and made our way into the main lobby. We were greeted with the amazing theming of the Disney Wonder:

iPhone Disney Cruise Pictures 057

The Miami skyline, and almost the only clear blue sky we saw on this trip

We had an hour or so before the Adventures Away Family Deck Party so decided to check out our stateroom:

iPhone Disney Cruise Pictures 065     iPhone Disney Cruise Pictures 066

Deck 6, Amidships

We have no complaint about the stateroom. It was dead center of the ship and so we experienced minimal rocking from the movement of the ship at sea. Each day we would get a Personal Navigator placed in our stateroom which listed every activity for the next day. These were invaluable and a nice feature. We checked things out briefly and then headed off to explore the ship before the away party started. When it did, it looked something like this:

iPhone Disney Cruise Pictures 081

iPhone Disney Cruise Pictures 072     iPhone Disney Cruise Pictures 077

Loud fun was had by all!

We had the late sitting for dining and so we did a little more exploring of the ship and then headed to the Walt Disney Theatre to see the first of the three Broadway-style shows: All Aboard! Let the Magic Begin! at 6:15 pm.

No photography is allowed during the show so I have no pictures to share with you. I’d rate this show a 6 out of 10 but the act that followed was a perfect 10! The physical comedy of Max Winfrey was amazing with juggling and audience participation. We would see more of him later in the sailing.

Next it was off to Animator’s Palate for the second seating at 8:15 pm where we met two amazing couples. But this is where we began to become disillusioned:

Disney Cruise Vacation 024

Although this was a cool restaurant, the sitting took over 2 hours to complete, which we felt ate into (pun intended) our overall time on the ship. Karen has a gluten allergy and so asked for one of the two meals on the menu she could eat, but she was brought the wrong dish. Instead of well-done beef tenderloin, she was brought a medium-rare steak. I ordered the veal and was brought a 1/2″ thick pork chop on a big bone with some batter on it. It was tough and not tender as I am used to veal being. We made the best of it and assumed things would get better. They didn’t, but more on that as the posts continue.

We didn’t leave the dining room until just after 10:30 pm leaving little time for entertainment. But because it was the first night, we decided to watch the end of Mary Poppins on the Funnel Vision and ended up arriving back at our stateroom just after midnight.

One day down and we were looking forward with optimism to Day Two at sea. But we were to see a downward trend develop as more of our time was wasted and, ultimately, a big chunk of the cruise was lost.

What are the Best Shoes to Wear in the Disney Parks?

Today we are discussing the best shoes to wear for the Disney Parks.

Tender Tootsies. Fried Feet. Done Dogs. Whatever you call your ‘flippers’, it isn’t very much fun when they hurt! And it definitely isn’t any fun when they hurt so much that you have to cut your days short at a Park or other Disney destination.

So what have my wife and I done to make our bipedal motion more enjoyable? Have we found the perfect footwear? Have my size 12 ‘boats’ had reason to thank me?

Here’s a list of things that may answer those questions. But probably not:

  1. Failed. Yes, the first time we visited Walt Disney World, we failed to consider how 15 straight hours of walking would affect our ‘wheels’. I wore basic, inexpensive running shoes and learned how to be crippled. My wife didn’t fare much better.
  2. Picked bad alternatives. Yes, we’re slow learners! So for subsequent days, I tried a couple of alternatives. First I slipped my ‘trotters’ into flip-flops and next I tried strapping my ‘hooves’ into sandals. Results: Don’t do either of these things if you plan to walk a lot! Again, my wife didn’t fare much better with the alternatives she came up with.
  3. Gained some sense. Yes, into even the most die-hard Disney fan a little common sense and balance can be instilled! We learned to forget fashion and style and wear what is clinically proven to give the most support over long periods of time. Remember, the term ‘sensible shoes’ is not a bad word(s)! Your shoes can even be ugly.
  4. Paced ourselves. Yes, this Blogorail is about finding the best shoes for the Disney Parks, but I didn’t want to do the research necessary to authoritatively recommend specific brand names. I’m not a Podiatrist and I’ve never played one on TV (old joke). And I’m lazy. So I’ll just opine the best shoes you can buy are the ones that will float your ‘gunboats’ for reasonable amounts of time.

Bad Choice

Extremely bad choice!

The key is not in the footwear, but in taking a break from walking. How can you take a break from walking?

  1. Sit on a bench. This doesn’t have to be a time waster as you can review pictures you’ve taken, people watch, or rehydrate.
  2. Enjoy a longer ride. Hit the People Mover, Carousel of Progress, Universe of Energy, or any of the shows that allow you to put your ‘plates of meat’ up for a while.
  3. Don’t visit a Park. Call me Captain Obvious, but if your ‘bigs’ are swelling why not take a Resort day and lie by the pool or relax in your room?

Bence It

Any bench will do

So once again I’ve shown how hard it is for me to stay on topic. I’ve managed to turn a post about recommending shoes into a recommendation not to walk… so much. You’re welcome. I’m here once a month. Try the veal.

Chillaxing

Thanks for joining me today. Time to put my feet up!

First Disney Cruise – Bon Voyage!

I T   B E G I N S

Today!

Well, as you are reading this, Karen and I should already be on our way! We are driving to Buffalo for an overnight stay before flying out tomorrow (Jan. 8th). The countdown has been a fun part of the overall experience, but now that the adventure has begun, we couldn’t be more excited!

Disney Wonder

But before we put these FDC posts on hold (until our return Jan. 16th) I have one more set of details to share with you:

P A C K I N G

Being as our trip is basically just of a 9-day duration, we won’t need much in the way of clothing and such, so we are packing only one medium-sized suitcase for the both of us. This way we only have one bag to check in at the airport. We will both have a carry-on which will have the most important things that we don’t want lost (such as our electronics).

However, we plan to put a smaller bag into the medium-sized suitcase for any souvenirs we may (will) buy. This extra bag will be checked for the return trip.

B L O G G I N G

Unfortunately, we will have limited access to the Internet during our cruise, so blogging about our experiences will have to wait until we return.

So for now, all I have left to say is:

B O N   V O Y A G E

… to us!

Mickey’s Fun Mug from Walt Disney Productions

Who could resist this great little sippy cup?

Mickey Fun Mug 004

Still has the original paper wrap-around advertising band

Mickey Fun Mug 001     Mickey Fun Mug 002

Found this in an antique mall in Peterborough, ON. I paid a little too much for it but ultimately it was worth it!

Mickey Fun Mug 005     Mickey Fun Mug 006

Dishwasher safe & Break Resistant

“Drinking time is fun time with Mickey and his friends!” says the side text. I’d agree, but it appears the only friends that showed up for the packaging photo-op were Donald Duck and one of his nephews.

Mickey Fun Mug 007

 Eagle Affiliates Inc. (APL Co.)

This product is from pre-1987 (Walt Disney Productions) and so, like most old toy and novelty companies, the above manufacturers are gone or absorbed. But before they went, they gave us a fine piece of Disneyana!

Funko Pop Wall-E Figurine is a Cue-T

There is definitely some debate over how good a film Pixar’s Wall-E was. I personally loved it, but I can see how it wouldn’t be everyone’s cube of garbage.

But you just have to admit that he is one cute little Waste Allocater Load Lifter – Earth Class:

new toys 003

Talk about puppy-dog eyes!

new toys 001     new toys 002

I’ve been watching these POP! figures since Series 1 came out and have liked a few along the way, but never enough to lay my $9.99 down. I like the design concept (even if it is a slight Precious Moments rip-off) but none of the Disney characters done to date captured my imagination. These days I only buy something when it ignites my ‘Got-to-have-that’ fire!

Pop! Wall-E has finally done that, and I’m happy enough to add one of this line to my main Disney collection.

Aww, I think I’ve turned his adorable little head!

Big Hero 6 – Inflatable Action Hero

If you could design a hero, what would you start with? An inflatable marshmellow-like medical robot with a kindly disposition? Me too! And as luck would have it, Disney thought this would make a good premise for a movie, and so we have Baymax. Of course, Marvel Comics thought it would make a good comic book first, so it seems that we all agree on the formula.

Big Hero 6 008

Haturday Luncheon 006     Haturday Luncheon 007

So, this is what I started with

I picked up my basic Baymax at Toys-R-Us for under $20 and was ready to build him into the world’s coolest super hero since Buzz Lightyear! And this is what I ended up with:

Big Hero 6 002

Haturday Luncheon 002 Haturday Luncheon 003

OK, well maybe I had a little more help from Toys-R-Us

I haven’t geeked out over a toy so much since I got my original Buzz Lightyear action figure. This deluxe Flying Baymax is just too cool! He’s huge, has pop-up wings, sounds, a rocket punch hand, and… he makes flying noises when you run around the room with him. At least… that’s what the box says.

Big Hero 6 001 Big Hero 6 007

Hiro even sticks on the back using magnets

Even before I got these guys out of the box, I was at my local Chapters book store and found this wonderful Art Of book:

Big Hero 6 009

Priced at $40 US/Can I was waffling as to whether or not I would buy this until a sales associate walked up with a special one-day 25% off coupon. It now sits on my book shelf. It would be impossible to cover all that is in this book, but obviously it has many concept sketches and information on how the film was developed. If you’re a Big Hero 6 fan you need to pick this up.

If you do, you’ll be able to see just how Baymax is put together:

Big Hero 6 014

Enjoy this sneak peek!

So are you hoping to revisit San Fransokyo when Big Hero 6 comes out on DVD/Blu-ray next year? Me too! But until then, I have my toys to play with and a book to read.

D23 Calendar for the 2014/15 Season

I recently renewed my membership with D23 and received my latest issue with a special gift. This year it’s a very nice calendar that highlights the many anniversaries we’ll be celebrating throughout 2014/15.

New stuff 024     New stuff 025

Front and back covers

Obviously, there are too many posters to show them all here, but I’d like to share a few of my favorites:

New stuff 026

It’s a shame that the Tower of the Four Winds was destroyed!

New stuff 027     New stuff 028

New stuff 029     New stuff 030

New stuff 031

Captain Jack Sparrow with Annette???

It’s hard to believe that the Walt Disney Archives will be 45 years old in June of 2015! Of all the Disney jobs out there, this is the one I’d love to have.

But the last poster I will share with you has to be my favorite of the set. I only wish I was born sooner so that I could have been an original (albeit honorary) Mouseketeer:

New stuff 032

39 children were Mouseketeers. I could have been number 40!

Disney has released a small sampling of the show on DVD and a Disney Treasures set of four episodes. This, in my opinion, is not enough! I hope to see the entire series released on DVD/Blu-ray some day.

In the meantime, get ready for an anniversary-filled 2015!
