Top Five Live-Action Disney Actresses

The fun thing about watching Disney movies is seeing a favorite star again and again. Walt knew talent when he saw it. But whereas some actors returned for numerous movies, the same isn’t as common for Disney actresses. So this list was harder to do than its male counterpart! Please check out that list by reading Top Five Live-Action Disney Actors.

Thinking of females who popped up fairly often we might list Kathryn Beaumont or Mary Costa, but they only appeared as voice artists in animation. Julie Andrews, Jodie Foster, Sandy Duncan, all appeared in one or more memorable Disney live-action movies.

But we want only the best in our Top Five List! So to quote one of our ladies who didn’t make the list: “Well Begun is Half-Done!”

Number Five: Suzanne Pleshette

Suzanne Pleshette

(January 31, 1937 – January 19, 2008)

Not the first name that comes to mind when asked for a Disney actress. You probably remember her better from The Bob Newhart Show? But the Disney films she did are memorable: The Ugly Dachshund, Blackbeard’s Ghost, and The Shaggy D.A.

Walt found her interesting as she was far from a Princess on or off the set! And if you can make Uncle Walt smile because you’re naughty… that’s got to be worth something!

Number Four: Dorothy McGuire

Dorothy McGuire

(June 14, 1918 – September 14, 2001)

If Fred MacMurray was the father everyone wished they had, Dorothy McGuire was the mother. Playing that role in three Disney classics: Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, and Summer Magic.

Her career was far more extensive both before and after Disney, but with only three outings for Disney, it puts her further down on the list.

Number Three: Luanna Patten

Luanna Patten

(July 6, 1938 – May 1, 1996)

The cutest little girl in Disney films! Her biggest role was her first for Disney in Song of the South (a film unfortunately ‘banned’ at the moment), followed by a good showing in So Dear to My Heart.

She didn’t have much to do after that, appearing in promotional spots or in connection segments in package films like Melody Time and Fun and Fancy Free. Johnny Tremain was her last film for Disney.

Not the most impressive list of movies, but considering how hard it was/is for a female to repeat with Disney, it is impressive that this little girl managed to do it!

Number Two: Hayley Mills

Hayley Mills

(April 18, 1946 -)

It all began with Polyanna. And of all the ladies on this list, Ms. Mills is the one who made the race for the Number One spot a close one!

Her list of movies includes Parent Trap, In Search of the Castaways, Summer Magic, The Moon-Spinners, and That Darn Cat! (her last Disney film, excepting the remake of Parent Trap).  During her six-year run at Disney, Mills was arguably the most popular child actress of her era. Oh, and she’s a Disney Legend (1998).

But not even all that could topple the lady at the top of the list:

Number One: Annette Funicello

Annette Funicello

(October 22, 1942 – April 8, 2013)

From the original Mickey Mouse Club, the opening of Disneyland, numerous guest spots on Disney programs both promotional and on TV, Disney Serials, a singing career on the Disney label, oh, and a few movies, this gal not only tops the female list of Disney stars, but challenges every male star for supremacy!

Add a series of beach movies (minus a visible navel to please Walt) and Skippy peanut butter and you’ve got quite a career there!

What else can one say about this Disney Legend? (1992)

Runner Up: Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury

(October 16, 1925 -)

Only starring in one Disney movie (Bedknobs and Broomsticks, 1971) she seems to be well-known by Disney fans, with a following befitting ones who have done far more for Disney. Perhaps it has something to do with a little animated film called Beauty and the Beast? But remember, animated films don’t count for this list!

Ms. Lansbury is forever immortalized for her television series Murder She Wrote (pray Jessica never comes to your town!) But she will also be remembered for her small body of work with Disney (unless that age of not-believing actually happens.)

Conclusion: Wow, that was hard! Obviously my list is personally motivated and thus open to criticism and at the very least, reorganization. Do you agree with my list? Or would you like to add someone? Please let us know in the comment section below!

Found Disney: Bing Crosby Likes Mickey’s Face

Picture this: Bing Crosby is in a cherry picker (a bucket on a hydraulic boom) being lifted up to and past huge pictures of the faces of famous personalities from yesteryear. As they say, you can’t make this stuff up, folks!

This could only happen on a TV special in 1968. Bing was joined by Bob Hope and the Supremes, among others, for what could only be described as… OK, just weird. Here is a still from the show:

Bing and the girls     Supremes in Western leather, Bing in?

But now let’s have a look at the moment when things got really weird:

Bing in a bucket 40 feet in the air!     Bing Crosy Show Image 002

I wish I had been fast enough to grab the camera to get a picture of the long-shot of Bing and the complete machine. It was… again, weird!

And what did he see?

Bing Crosy Show Image 001

Mickey Mouse

Bing was singing about famous faces so I guess the mouse was bound to be included.

You know, I don’t see any other sites covering things like this. I’m beginning to worry about my sanity. Maybe I’m not really seeing this stuff. Bing in a bucket singing about the face of a fictional mouse? Nah, couldn’t have happened! Could it?

Curse you GetTV, stop messing with my reality!

Top Five Live-Action Disney Actors

The fun thing about watching Disney movies is seeing a favorite star again and again. Walt knew talent when he saw it and he used the same actors over and over if the fit was right for the next project. Some actors were just good box office!

Thinking of males who pop up often we might list Bobby Driscoll, but he was mainly a voice-over actor. We could also mention Ken Barry, Tim Conway, David Tomlinson, Dick Van Dyke, Tim Considine, and James MacArthur. All of these had multiple roles in Disney live-action movies.

But we want only the best in our Top Five List! So to quote one of our fellas who didn’t make the list: “Here we gooooooo!”

Number Five: Dean Jones

Dean Jones

(January 25, 1931 – September 1, 2015)

You may not realize that this man starred in over 10 Disney movies! Perhaps his best known role was along side that spunky little Volkswagen, Herbie. But he delivered many other comedic turns, including That Darn Cat! and The Shaggy D.A.

Why isn’t Mr. Jones higher on the list? Although a hardworking player, he isn’t one who most Disney fans readily think of. This is an injustice to a Disney staple and one we hope to correct with this list!

Number Four: Kevin Corcoran

Kevin Corcoran

(June 10, 1949 – October 6, 2015)

Kevin was honored as a Disney Legend on October 9, 2006. This alone should secure him a place on this list. But it’s his enduring roles in Disney films that puts him here, over a dozen in fact! Starting with Old Yeller (and later its sequel Savage Sam) and continuing with such films as Swiss Family Robinson and Babes in Toyland, he just kept showing up and doing a wonderful job.

I wanted to place him higher on the list, where I believe he belongs, but the competition was too strong. The next lad just barely pushed him out of the Number Three spot:

Number Three: Tommy Kirk

Tommy Kirk

(December 10, 1941 -)

Tommy was inducted as a Disney Legend on October 9, 2006 along with his costar Kevin Corcoran. But again, this alone didn’t get him on this list! It is his solid portfolio of over a dozen Disney films that lands him so high on the list. Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, The Shaggy Dog, The Absent-Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, Savage Sam, and The Misadventures of Merlin Jones are just a few that you might remember. Is there a Disney film this lad wasn’t in?

Of course, it all started on the Mickey Mouse Club as Joe Hardy for the serial “The Hardy Boys: The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure”. That’s a pedigree you just can’t ignore!

Number Two: Kurt Russell

Kurt Russell

(March 17, 1951 -)

Arguably Walt’s personal favorite, you might think that Mr. Russell should be in the Number One spot (and he probably should), especially when you consider that the last thing Mr. Disney wrote was ‘Kurt Russell’. Weird. But that alone can’t get a fella all the way to the top of this list!

With over a dozen Disney movies and one of the longest Disney associations on record (thanks to 2005’s Sky High) Kurt deserves respect. With his debut in Follow Me Boys! to movies like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (beginning his running character of Dexter Riley, the boy to whom everything happened) and a voice part in The Fox and the Hound and finishing with the aforementioned Sky High, Kurt is a Disney constant yesterday and today, which not many can claim!

Fun Fact: Kurt met Goldie Hawn for the first time on the set of a Disney movie. Do you know which one? The answer is at the bottom of this post. Hint: She played a giggly girl!

Number One: Fred MacMurray

Fred MacMurray

(August 30, 1908 – November 5, 1991)

Mr. MacMurray came to Disney later in life. He started with the famous The Shaggy Dog, then moved on to The Absent-Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, Follow Me Boys!, and The Happiest Millionaire (these last two being my personal favorites). Although he did other Disney movies, he has the smallest number of Disney movies on this list.

So why is Fred MacMurray the Number One Disney male live-action star?

The first reason may just be that he was the first person honored as a Disney Legend, in 1987.

But to think of Mr. MacMurray is to think of all that Walt Disney wanted to project with his films. He was wholesome. He had old-world charm. He was decent, on and off the screen. And he continued with this persona as Steve Douglas, the widowed patriarch of My Three Sons, which ran on ABC from 1960–1965 and then on CBS from 1965–1972. I think Walt would have liked that show!

If you want to see another side of this versatile actor, check out 1944’s Double Indemnity, a film that is attributed with starting the Film Noir genre. Remember, Mr. MacMurray started his career in 1929 and did his last piece of work in 1978. There is so much more to discover with this Number One actor!

Runner Up: Ed Wynn

Ed Wynn

(November 9, 1886 – June 19, 1966)

Wynn began his career in vaudeville in 1903. So he is definitely the fella on this list with the longest career! He was well along in years and accomplishment before he met Walt Disney. But what a showing he made for himself: Wynn provided the voice of the Mad Hatter in the animated film, Alice in Wonderland and then played The Toymaker alongside Annette Funicello and Tommy Sands in Babes in Toyland released in 1961.

But possibly his best-remembered film appearance was as Uncle Albert in Mary Poppins (1964). That Darn Cat! (1965) followed and then he had smaller roles in The Absent Minded Professor (as the fire chief) and Son of Flubber (as county agricultural agent A.J. Allen). His final performance, as Rufus in The Gnome-Mobile was released a few months after his death. Not the longest list of films among the fellas.

In addition to Disney films, Wynn was also starred in the anniversary edition of The Golden Horseshoe Revue (and for the cool factor, he also entered The Twilight Zone… twice!). Wynn was posthumously named a Disney Legend on August 10, 2013.

Conclusion: Obviously my list is personally motivated and thus open to criticism and at the very least, reorganization. Do you agree with my list? Or would you like to add someone? Please let us know in the comment section below! And be sure to read my other list: Top Five Live-Action Disney Actresses.

Fun Fact Answer: The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band released in 1968.

Found Disney: Donald Duck for President on Hee Haw

I love watching old TV shows. They harken back to a simpler time and are usually quite innocent and ‘safe’.

I also love it when I see Disney references in these old shows! Recently I was watching an old episode of Hee Haw and saw:

TV Disney 002

I’m not sure he’d be qualified…

This statement appeared on the program in late 1969 perhaps in response to the recent election of Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994) as the 37th President of the United States who served from 1969 to 1974.

Throughout many episodes this duck walks across the screen and holds up a sign. Usually it contains a slogan designed to make you leave ducks out of your cooking schedule. But this time our fowl friend took it to the next level!

Hee Haw Laugh

Now that’s funny!

Places: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida

Today we are looking back on a visit we made to an unusual theme park that would be perfect for your next family adventure. Welcome aboard!

W E E K I     W A C H E E     S P R I N G S

WWS Entrance

We’ve visited this State Park twice now, and although it isn’t as big as some of its competing roadside attractions, it still offers much to entertain the whole family!

Weeki Wachee Springs is located in Spring Hill, FL at the intersection of S.R. 50 and Hwy. 19 which places it just 45 minutes North of Tampa and 2 hours West of Orlando. The full address is: 6131 Commercial Way, Spring Hill, FL 34606.

WWS Map

So why should you make the trip to Weeki Wachee Springs?

SPRINGS: The Weeki Wachee River winds its way 12 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. But it starts from a spring. The Seminole Indians named the spring “Weeki Wachee,” which means “little spring” or “winding river.” The spring is so deep that the bottom has never been found. Each day, more than 117 million gallons of clear, fresh 74-degree water bubbles up out of subterranean caverns.

RIVER BOAT CRUISE: Take a ride down the pristine waterway of the Weeki Wachee River as experienced boat captains give you an educational experience about the river and the different types of natural wildlife that might be seen during the trip. This may include manatees! They have swum next to boats and have been known to interrupt the live Mermaid shows (see next entry).

River Boat Cruise

You can also rent canoes and kayaks and make your own way down the river! For more pictures of what you can expect to see, please read the post entitled Florida: Weeki Wachee River found right here on Disney Nouns.

MERMAIDS: There are ‘real’ mermaids swimming and putting on shows for audiences in the Mermaid Theater that seats 500 and is embedded in the side of the spring 16 feet below the surface. The Little Mermaid and Fish Tails are the shows presently in production.

Mermaids

Ariel and her sisters (2008)

This post, and the Peach Loop in general, is to introduce you to family-friendly tourist destinations. So I feel I should put in a word of warning at this point: There be boobies!

Well-endowed Mermaids in bikini tops aren’t the only occurrence of this overt feature of Weeki Wachee Springs. Stone statues are installed throughout the park and there is a whole line of topless sirens-of-the-deep at the entrance (see opening image for reference).

Artwork 1  Artwork 2

The statues are tasteful and are no worse than what you would see in an art museum, but I just thought forewarned was forearmed. You may want to bring blinders for the little ones… or the husbands.

ANIMAL SHOWS: The animal encounters provide you with a first-hand glimpse of some of Florida’s native wildlife including alligators, snakes, birds, and others.

Animal Encounter 1  Animal Encounter 2

BUCCANEER BAY: Florida’s only spring-fed water park, the thrilling flume rides empty you into the pristine waters of Buccaneer Bay. Lil’ Mates Caribbean Cove (Kiddie Pool) is an area reserved for kids 6 years of age and younger.  A water play area that the kids will enjoy and where Mom and Dad can relax as a trained lifeguard supervises.

Of course, Buccaneer Bay is a seasonal offering. Please visit the official website for more detailed information, directions, and pictures.

Weeki Wachee Springs

To conclude, I’d just like to mention that the park has been used for a backdrop in many films. And Don Knotts once visited the Mermaid Theater to promote his (then) new movie The Incredible Mr. Limpet, and how cool is that?

Walt Disney World Red Thermos

Some things were never meant to be collectibles, but Disney fans have never let that stop them from buying and displaying all sorts of strange and wonderful things!

Would you display this in your home?

Red Thermos 001

Red Thermos 002     Red Thermos 003

Definitely different than the usual decorating object, but a thermos still has much to offer. The imagery is whimsical and nicely themed. This one being patterned after one of Walt Disney’s favorite pass times: Trains.

We see Bandleader Mickey riding Casey Jr. around the Walt Disney Resort.

Red Thermos 005

What makes a thermos more valuable is being complete, with cup and stopper and an unbroken flask liner.

Red Thermos 006

Manufactured by Aladdin

To see the lunch box that this thermos design came with, but in blue, please check out this earlier post entitled Walt Disney World Metal Lunch Box.

Disney’s Wacky Wigwam Game

Disney has often gone to the well of stereotypes! Today we visit the year 1972, a time before the world had learned to be considerate of the heritage and customs of others.

Native Americans (or First Nations, being the preferred term in Canada) have been the target of outlandish stereotypical depictions in many Disney productions. Peter Pan comes to mind with the beet-red warriors doing little more than dancing and spouting in-depth dialogue like ‘Ugh’ and ‘How!’

The game I am featuring today does play on the typical stereotype, but not to the same degree as other Disney properties. Let’s have a look:

Wacky Wigwam 002

Wigwam: An Algonquian domed or conical dwelling prevalent in the eastern half of North America. The circular framework of poles was covered with bark or reed mats. A hole in the roof allowed the smoke from the fire to escape.

It looked like this, and not the pointed tipi design used in the game:

Wigwam

Tipi: Also ‘tepee’ or ‘teepee’ is a conical tent, traditionally made of animal skins upon wooden poles. A tipi is distinguished from other conical tents by the smoke flaps at the top of the structure.

Here is how a tipi looks in the real world, and in this game:

Tipi     Wacky Wigwam 013

I suppose Wacky Tipi didn’t have the same marketing potential

So we have identified the main problems with the game, now let’s look at the remaining elements:

Wacky Wigwam 003

Wacky Wigwam 005

Back and Sides of the box

This game was part of a three-game series marketed under ‘A Walt Disney World Game From Parker Brothers’ promotion. This version was manufactured in Canada, so it came with a set of French instructions in the box as well as the English ones on the box:

Wacky Wigwam 011

Wacky Wigwam 006

If you enlarge and read the instructions you will see the game is easy to play. You start by setting up the play surface like this:

Wacky Wigwam 012

You then use the spinner to determine how many of your ducks you can cover with the wigwams. Once the ten wigwams are used, you must uncover ducks to then cover more of your ducks. But as you are doing this, other players are uncovering your ducks to cover their ducks!

Wacky Wigwam 007

Land the spinner on the ‘Mix Up’ space and every wigwam and playing piece gets shuffled. At this point everyone loses track of which ducks are under what wigwams! So on your next turn, you could uncover one of your own ducks. This has the same vibe as the game Sorry with the added dimension of messing yourself up too!

Wacky Wigwam 14

Donald is ready to play with Huey, Dewey, and Louie

Overall, this is an entertaining game that would work without the Native American theme. But the tipis are cute and the addition of Donald and his nephews would definitely appeal to younger players.

Disney Tiny Kingdom – Sleeping Beauty

A friend of mine had been saying he had something Disney for me for the last two years. He picked it up at a yard sale but we just never connected being as we lived in different areas. Well, recently I moved into the same area as my friend, and he finally gave me:

Sleeping Beauty Tiny Kingdom 1

An unassuming white box?

He asked me to let him know if it was anything worth while. So I opened it to find:

Sleeping Beauty Tiny Kingdom 2

Something very worth while!

This series of miniature scenes from famous Disney films was released in 2008 featuring figurines that stood up to 2.75 inches tall in a box 2.5 inches tall by 8.25 inches wide by 3.5 inches deep (above).

Which of the many variations do I have? Let’s open the box and find out:

Sleeping Beauty Tiny Kingdom 3

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty Tiny Kingdom 4

Figures made of metal and enamel

The figures are about the size of a Disney Trading Pin, but without the pin stem. They move slightly back and forth in little slots in the bottom of the display box:

Sleeping Beauty Tiny Kingdom 8

It seems that the pins are grouped in three areas, or scenes. Let’s take a closer look at each of these:

Sleeping Beauty Tiny Kingdom 5

Prince Phillip and Maleficent

Sleeping Beauty Tiny Kingdom 6

Briar Rose and Dancing Partner

Sleeping Beauty Tiny Kingdom 7

Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather (w/crown)

Sleeping Beauty is the 16th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series and was released in theaters on January 29, 1959. The film was made while Walt Disney was building Disneyland and so to help promote the film, Imagineers named the park’s icon “Sleeping Beauty Castle”. It was to be Snow White’s castle, in honor of Disney’s first Princess, but she got ‘evicted’ from the place and has never had a castle named for her in a Disney Park yet! Bummer.

As mentioned, the Tiny Kingdom featured many different films. Here are a few of them:

Alice in Wonderland Cinderella

Dumbo Mickey Mouse Club

Peter Pan Snow White

This line (Tiny Kingdom) also released individually boxed miniature figurines of each of the main Disney characters.

The above boxed film scenes can sell for up to $50.00 US on-line or for considerably less at a local yard sale! The Sleeping Beauty variant I have still had the original bubble wrap inside to protect the figures, so it was purchased but never opened or displayed.

Disney-Themed Telephone Collection

I like collecting multiples of a type, like in this post: Phones! Disney phones to be precise. There have been so many different styles made that every flea market and antique shop usually has one or two for sale.

Unfortunately, the proprietors seem to think that ‘Disney’ connected to ‘phone’ means ‘big money’, which is rarely the case. Most Disney phones have been produced in recent years and in large numbers of manufacture, so value, although not low should at least be reasonable.

Many of the phones in my collection were bought in charity shops. So let’s have a look:

Disney Phones 005

My wife’s least favorite

Minnie Mouse Phone 001

Room for a personalized picture in the frame

Disney Phones 001

Orange tube under rocket lights up when phone rings

Disney Phones 002

Five sayings and animation when phone rings

Disney Phones 003

Music, jokes, and movement when phone rings

Disney Phones 004

Famous style of Mickey phone, early example

The phone above has been immortalized at the Pop Century Resort in Walt Disney World. It can be found ‘guarding’ the entrance to one of the buildings, as  shown below:

Pop Century Mickey Phone 1     Pop Century Mickey Phone 3

Pop Century Mickey Phone 4     Pop Century Mickey Phone 5

Now that’s a phone!

This phone style has also been rendered in miniature. Let’s have a look:

Disney Phones 006

Hallmark Ornament 2011 w/several spoken messages from Mickey

There is also a normal sized model with the touch pad instead of the rotary dial that I have. Obviously, it was produced in more modern times.

Disney Phones 007

And Mickey using his very own Mickey Mouse phone (1 1/2″ high)

I have a few more that are still in storage and when I find them, I will update this post. Each of these phones still work, but I don’t have a landline anymore!

Oh well, they make great decoration for the house.
