Why Wait in Long Disney Line-ups?

A: Because you’re crazy.

B: Because you have no choice.

C: Because it’s the only way to get into or onto an attraction.

D: Because after you’ve read this post, you’ll realize it’s not that bad.

E: All of the above.

OK, probably this is an occasion when the answer is ‘All of the Above’. But for the purpose of this post, we’re going to pretend that only statement D is true!

So why shouldn’t you mind waiting in a long line at Disney? It’s Top Five time:

Reason No. 5

Anticipation

Anticipation

One year we stayed at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground and had to wait in line for many a bus. Waiting for Disney transportation is probably the first long line you will experience on your trip and can be very frustrating!

But what are you really waiting for? Your day of magic is about to begin and perhaps a delayed bus ride is just the time you need to reflect on what you hope to reap from your day. It can be a time to plan and a time to get excited about what is to come!

OK, I realize this is a bit of a stretch, but that’s why it’s Reason number 5.

Reason No. 4

Beautiful Views

Beautiful Views

Although you almost always have to wait to get anywhere at a Disney Park, it doesn’t have to be drab. The Water Taxis around Walt Disney World ply the most scenic areas of the property. Views from most docks are breathtaking! Take a moment (or many moments if the boat isn’t on time) to relax and take it all in.

Reason No. 3

Atmosphere

Atmosphere 1     Atmosphere 2

Whether it be waiting for a table at a restaurant or entering the queue of a beloved attraction, Disney always tries to enhance the experience.

This time of waiting can prepare you for the event to come! Sitting in a waiting area that looks like grandma’s old kitchen will only make that traditional meal taste better. And passing through a cloud of foreboding fog will get your mind adjusted to the weird and wild attraction that has ‘terror’ in its name!

Reason No. 2

Unique Perspectives

Unique Perspectives 1     Unique Perspectives 2

Most lines for E-Ticket attractions are very long and heavily themed. So bring along your camera and take lots of pictures. Sometimes you can see things that aren’t always obvious from other places in the parks.

For example, you can see the loading areas from above, or watch ride vehicles pass underneath you as they leave or return to the loading area. Standing outside an attraction can give you a basic idea of what it’s about, but walking through its line (even if painfully long) can give you a more intimate feel for what the Imagineers were going for!

Reason No. 1

Interaction

Interaction

Disney realizes that no one visits a park to stand in line. So they do try to make the waiting less aggravating by supplying something to do. In the Soarin’ queue at Epcot, guests can enjoy interactive screens and activities. In other attraction lines, there may be things to play with, audio stimulation, or tactile challenges.

These five reasons not enough to convince you to enjoy standing in line?

Then never forget that you are usually with your family or friends! And you are surrounded by other Disney Guests who may be just as bored as you are. I’ve enjoyed some very interesting conversations and shared tips and experiences with fellow ‘liners’ only to find it’s time to board the ride and I was left wondering where the time went!

Your time at Disney will only be as fun as you choose to make it, so find the joy wherever you can, even in that long line-up!

Pixar’s CARS Walmart Wally Hauler Die-Cast

Although I realize many are not big Walmart fans, I think we all have to admit they do have some good pricing, and at times, some very good merchandise.

This is quite often true of their toy department. Over the years (since Cars was released in 2006) I’ve found some pretty awesome die-cast variations from the Cars universe at Walmart. But none with such an obvious commercial tie-in as:

Walmart Truck 1

Walmart Truck 3

Empty Packaging

I’ve always liked the packaging for the Cars die-cast models. They usually have nice backgrounds pulled from the movie. But let’s look at Wally unpacked:

Walmart Truck 4 Walmart Truck 5

Walmart Truck 6

Truth be told, I bought this variant (at a rather high price of $24.95 CAN) solely for the three Rust-eze boxes it came with. I think they are just that cool! But more on them later.

Walmart Truck 7 Walmart Truck 8

Walmart Truck 9

Ready for his close-up!

What can we say about Medicated Rust-eze Bumper Ointment – Rear End Formula? It’s rather a delicate subject and a bit personal for any rusty vehicle! But as a company, they did give Lightning McQueen his big break in racing, so they deserve some respect. And less snickering.

Walmart Truck 10

I got three whole cases! And I’ve never felt better.

Walmart also had a Mac version in red with a trailer that opened in the back so you could load (probably about) two cars inside. But I thought the Wally Hauler version was cooler and more exclusive. Calling it a Limited Edition might be a stretch, as I’m sure the production run was quite high.

So have you seen Wally Hauler in your local Walmart?

Hundred Acre Wood Wall Map

Hallmark stores are almost becoming as good as, or better than, The Disney Store for offering great Disney treasures! I kid you not.

Take a look at what we just picked up yesterday:

HAW Plaque 001

Hundred Acre Wood Map 001

15″ W x 15″ H x 1 1/2″ D

This great reproduction of the Hundred Acre Wood map can stand or be hung, which is what we have done with it. It features all of your favorite characters from the A. A. Milne’s classic Pooh stories. Here are closer looks at each corner of the piece:

Hundred Acre Wood Map UL

The houses of Rabbit, Kanga, and Owl

Hundred Acre Wood Map UR

Christopher Robin’s house

Hundred Acre Wood Map LL

Winnie the Pooh’s house (or Mr. Sander’s, depending on who you ask)

Hundred Acre Wood Map LR

Eeyore’s gloomy place… er, house

The only omission is Piglet’s house. Poor little guy! But he shouldn’t feel too bad as Tigger is missing altogether! Most of the other main attractions of the Hundred Acre Wood are represented here.

In conclusion, kudos to Hallmark for offering such wonderful things. And to Christopher Robin we say: Work on your spelling!

Pixar’s Cars: Dinoco Showgirl #1

Showgirl: “A woman, typically attired in an elaborately decorated costume, who performs in a musical or theatrical production.”

In the world of Disney/Pixar’s Cars there were a few showcars (who were girls) that did wear, at least, an elaborately decorated headpiece:

Dinoco Showgirl 3

Probably a cousin of Mia and Tia

Dinoco Showgirl 1     Dinoco Showgirl 2

We know that the original dream of Lightning McQueen was to win the sponsorship for the mega-corporation Dinoco. Not in small part because Dinoco had glitz, glamour, and… Showgirls!

Dinoco Showgirl 4     Dinoco Showgirl 5

It wasn’t until McQueen met a little blue Porsche named Sally (coincidentally, also sporting a beautiful blue paint job) that his dream changed.

Dinoco Showgirl 6

These die-cast models are well done by Mattel and are made in China. So what more can we say about this Showgirl?

Va-Va-Vrooooom!

Winners Circle Muppet’s ANIMAL Character Funnycar

I have three of these larger die-cast Disney character cars and two or three miniatures. They are fun to be sure! This one features everyone’s favorite manic Muppet:

Die Cast Animal 008

This is a die-cast funnycar model featuring Tony Pedregon (March 8, 1965) who is a 2-time NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Funny Car Champion from Torrance, California. He is also the youngest of the Pedregon brothers. His brother Cruz Pedregon is the 1992 NHRA Mello Yello Series Funny Car Champion.

Here are two pictures of Tony’s actual cars. One is perhaps the template for the Animal variant, and the other is a life-sized version of the Animal car:

Let’s not get too wordy with this post, but instead enjoy some more pics:

Die Cast Animal 005

Die Cast Animal 001

Die Cast Animal 003

Read the fine print, I dare ya!

Die Cast Animal 009

This is a Winner’s Circle series model produced by the Action Performance Company but was made in China.

Die Cast Animal 002

For more die-cast models see the post Cars Merchandise: Nascar #10 featuring a car modeled after the vehicle of Scott Riggs.

Our Disneyland Guide Books and Ephemera

In honor of the recent Disneyland 60th Anniversary show on ABC I thought I’d share a couple of things we kept from our first (and only) trip to the Disneyland Resort

Disneyland Brochure 1     California Adventure Brochure 1

Guide Maps

A must-get on any trip to a Disney park! If you are fortunate enough to visit the same park at least once a year, you will have a snapshot of what was available on each of your visits. This is due to the fact that each Guide Map has just that: a map of the park in question with a complete list of attractions. Like these:

California Adventure Brochure 2

Disneyland

Disneyland Brochure 2

California Adventure

These are from 2013. With some new attractions and a refurbishment or two since then, the parks would look a little different now.

We tend to keep anything we get from Disney! Do you? Tell me what you think of this neat little folder:

Disneyland Folder 1

Disneyland Folder 2

I can’t remember exactly, but I think this folder was handed to us at the Howard Johnson (Good Neighbor) Hotel upon our arrival. It contained documents and tickets from our Travel Agent that had to be sent ahead for us due to the last-minute nature of our booking.

Disneyland Forlder 3

Disneyland Folder 4

The best part of these items as collectibles is that they take up very little space but bring back a lot of memories! So how many Guide Maps do you have?

Tokyo Disneyland Plates

I had all but given up on Value Village (a Canadian charity shop) for finding Disney treasures. Either people weren’t parting with the stuff as much anymore or more Disneyana fans had caught on to the great deals!

But now that I have moved to a different part of Ontario, I have access to new Value Village stores with new donated treasures. And so I am again finding a Disney treasure or two. Like these:

Tokyo DL Plates Main Street

World Bazaar

In the North American parks, this would be called Main Street USA. But even though the name has been changed, the attractions are mostly the same with lots of eateries and shopping opportunities.

Mickey and Minnie seem to be enjoying a fall day in dapper style!

Tokyo DL Plates Adventureland

Adventureland

I love the Jungle Cruise setting for this hunting expedition, but I think our three intrepid hunters have picked the wrong prey in Sher Khan!

Kudos to Goofy for shooting with a camera.

Tokyo DL Plates Back

The back side of plate

Unlike the North American products where the merchandise is stamped with both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland gets to issue these all on its own.

I wonder if there were plates for the other lands? Those being Westernland, Critter Country, Fantasyland, Toontown, and Tomorrowland. Also, the 7 areas of Tokyo DisneySea could also have a plate each. The Internet yielded up no pictures to prove the existence of such plates.

Again, I am pleased as punch to again find Disney treasure on the cheap ($5.99 CAN each).

Tinkerbell Shadow w/Attitude

Peter Pan isn’t the only one with a shadow. And he certainly isn’t the only one with a shadow with attitude! Take a look:

Tinker Shadow

Arms crossed = attitude!

Tinker Bell certainly had a lot of attitude, but perhaps that’s why we love her so much. I captured this image in my bedroom when the Pixie didn’t think I was looking!

Kathryn Beaumont’s Live-Action Film

I just finished a pair of posts listing the best live-action Disney actors and actresses. I made mention of Ms. Beaumont in this way: “Thinking of females who popped up fairly often we might list Kathryn Beaumont or Mary Costa, but they only appeared as voice artists in animation.

Well, that may have been true of Ms. Beaumont’s time with Disney, but before Disney she appeared live

MGM – 1948

Kathryn Beaumont (born 27 June 1938) is an English actress who is best known for providing the voices of both Alice in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland (1951) and Wendy in Disney’s Peter Pan (1953). Walt Disney personally cast Beaumont after seeing the film On an Island with You, in which child actress Beaumont had a small role as Penelope Peabody:

KB pictures 005

My favorite line of hers from the film occurs when her mother is trying to get her a part in a film (being made within the film) from Mr. Buckley (Jimmy Durante). Beaumont recites ‘Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue’ to be included in a wedding scene. Buckley puts them off by telling the pair that Penelope is ‘too British!’ Penelope looks up at her movie mother and says: “Mummy, what’s wrong with being too British?”

Priceless! Obviously, Walt thought so too. Would you like to see how she looked in this role? Here is a frame from the movie:

KB pictures 001

Here, she is reciting the wedding rhyme

KB pictures 004

Beaumont with Jimmy Durante

For interest sake, Beaumont was 10 years old in On an Island With You, 13 when she did Alice, and 15 when she was Wendy in Peter Pan.

In 2005, Beaumont retired as the voice of Alice and Wendy, and her role as these two characters was taken over by Hynden Walch.

Places: Canada’s Wonderland at Dusk

When night falls at a theme park, the real beauty can come out! During the day, you can see all of the little things that distract you from the magic.

But at dusk:

Canada's Wonderland at Night

The normal becomes magical

Canada’s Wonderland has only a few focal points, but they make the most of them at night. The mountain is beautiful but I thought this fountain with the lighted trees made a better picture.
