Disney-fied Wall Clock

I had to create a new word for this post: Disney-fied. It’s what I’ve done to an old wall clock that we found upon moving into our new place. The previous inhabitant had the good idea of putting a little collector plate behind the glass where the pendulum would normally be. But we decided to swap out the plate for one of our own!

Let’s have a look so that you can see what I mean:

Disney Wall Clock 004

We’ve had this little collector plate for years, but never really had a proper place to display it. Until now!

Disney Wall Clock 005

At this point I have affixed it in place rather crudely with some folded-up cardboard. Obviously I’ll have to figure out a more decorative way to keep the plate centered.

The plate itself is rather interesting. It was sold at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World and features a moment from the 1941 Disney Short called the ‘Nifty Nineties’.

Disney Wall Clock 002

Released June 30th of 1941, this Short follows Mickey Mouse as he takes his best girl Minnie out to a vaudeville show, and then out for a wild drive in an antique car. Running time is 7:33 and you can see the whole thing below:

Apart from Mickey and Minnie, the Short also features Goofy (cameo), Donald Duck (cameo), Daisy Duck (cameo), Huey (cameo), Dewey (cameo), Louie (cameo), Fred (Moore), Ward (Kimball). Fred Moore and Ward Kimball also animated parts of the Short, perhaps their own parodies as second-rate vaudeville comedians. Oh, and there’s a cow.

What do you think of our disney-fied idea?

BOOK REVIEW: ‘The City of Despair’ with Mickey Mouse

While looking around a local flea market, I saw a picture of Mickey Mouse (a Cast Member in costume, actually) walking through the Utilidors under Walt Disney World on the front of a book. Beside him was a sign indicating directions to Fantasyland, Adventureland, and Frontierland. Of course, this caught my attention.

Was this a Disney book I hadn’t seen nor heard of?

The City of Despair 1

The title was intriguing!

I thumbed through the pages but there was no synopsis, no author biography, and no introduction to hint at what the book was about. So I skim-read a few pages and found only one reference to Disney (a quick nod to Disneyland, but not in the context of an expose).

Some of the content seemed rather inflammatory (again, not against Disney) but I didn’t see any signs of bad language.

The City of Despair 2

I cannot find anything about the book online other than that you can buy it on Amazon. No information is available about the author either. And what about the author’s name anyway? ‘Urban Strietz’ seems like it could be a pen name, looking awfully close to Urban Streets?

Having no other information, I decided to research the publisher. There is no mention of the Scop House division or UAS anywhere on the Net, but these could have been shut down or replaced in a past restructuring. So that just left me with the Sterling Harbor Press name to google. And this is what I found:

Welcome to Sterling Publishing. Sterling Publishing is an innovative and forward-thinking publishing company committed to creating books that inspire and entertain. With over 5,000 titles in print and 60 years in business, Sterling’s reputation for publishing quality books comes from a variety of imprints led by dedicated editorial and creative design teams that bring great ideas and stories to readers of every age. From educational resources, children’s picture books, puzzles and games, adult fiction, craft and photography, cookbooks, self-help, classics and more, Sterling’s list offers something for everyone. Sterling Publishing and its crafting division, Lark Books, are based in New York City.

I cannot find anything on the Unpublishable Authors Series tagline either.

I didn’t buy the book (even though I could have had it for 50 cents) but took the above pictures for reference. If you have heard of or read this book, please leave your thoughts on it in the comments below!

Photography Tips featuring Types of Poses – Disney Edition

I’m better behind the camera than I am in front of one! When I pose, I usually just stand there like a lump with my arms at my side and attempt a passable smile. Pathetic!

Pictures are more fun to share and more interesting to look at if your subject tries to put a little something into the poses. But failing that, you can use a few tricks to spice up the end shot.

I’d like to share 8 types of poses with you now:

I N T E R A C T I O N

Interaction

Posing in front of something isn’t very interesting, but if you can interact with the object by touching it for example, it creates a connection that can evoke a story. This topiary dinosaur outside The Universe of Energy in Epcot seems to appreciate Karen’s attention!

R E F E R E N C E

Reference

A lamppost. A person swinging around it. Does this pose remind you of anything? The iconic moment in Singing in the Rain when Gene Kelly is dancing, er… in the rain! It only takes a nod to some famous scene or photograph to evoke an emotional response on the part of a viewer.

B O L D

Bold

Sometimes the background (here, the Morocco Pavilion in Epcot) is so strong that you need to match it for power and presence. In the picture above, I tried to show strength and confidence. Also, by centering me (as the subject) it furthers the theme by making the image symmetrical and thus rigid.

S U R R O U N D I N G S

Surroundings

Sometimes the background does most of the work for you. Here, Karen is perfectly nestled in the space. The picture has many different textures and directions that all serve to lead to and frame the human subject.

E N E R G E T I C

Energetic

This billboard for The Extreme Stunt Show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was very busy and dynamic. So Karen decided to try to match the level of energy in her pose by miming the positioning of a race car driver as she grips an imaginary steering wheel. The facial expression was a bonus!

C A N D I D

Candid

Capturing a subject in an unguarded moment can yield some of the best portrait shots. But you have to be careful not to catch the face at an awkward angle thus portraying them in an unfavorable light. Especially if the subject is your spouse. And you wish that association to continue.

P L A Y F U L

Playful

People enjoy looking at pictures that are fun! Seeing a friend in a huge colorful hat (here, from the Mexican Pavilion in Epcot) can be entertaining and lead to the story as to how the subject found and then came to wear said hat. It is also a way to remember an object you liked but wouldn’t normally buy, let alone be caught dead wearing under normal circumstances!

Closely related to a playful pose is:

S I L L Y

Silly

Again, some settings just lend themselves to good photography setups. At The Pop Century Resort in Walt Disney World there are dozens of oversized ‘props’ for use in creating silly situations and poses.

Friends love to see and make fun of other friends doing silly or outright stupid things! Otherwise, how would America’s Funniest Home Videos still be on the air? If you have a subject willing to ham it up (as I am above) then more people might be willing to sit through your photo album revues!

And there you have it. 8 posing styles to explore the next time you visit The Vacation Kingdom, another Disney park, or any other interesting destination you think you will need to record on film.

Remember: Friends don’t subject friends to bad pictures!

Places: Disneyland Hotels – Good Neighbor Hotels

Today I’d like to review an excellent Good Neighbor hotel that is found not too far away from the front entrance to Disneyland itself:

HoJo 1

Good Neighbor Hotel: Howard Johnson

We booked our reservations at the Howard Johnson through a friend who is a Disney travel agent and we never regretted the decision! Everything went off without a hitch thanks to the professionalism of our agent and the friendly staff at the hotel.

I intend to keep this review short with a what-you-really-need-to-know approach. So with that said, here is the room we stayed in:

HoJo 3

HoJo 2     HoJo 4

The bed was very comfortable and the decor was nice with everything being extra clean. We also had a great view of Disneyland off our balcony. Well, parts of it anyway:

Fireworks 17     Fireworks 1

Taking a peek at the nighttime fireworks

HoJo 13

Blue Monorail with the Matterhorn

HoJo 15

Red Monorail with the Matterhorn

HoJo 14

Blue sky with the Matterhorn

The hotel was just a 5-minute walk from the entrance to Disneyland. Pricing varies with the time of visit and length of stay, so suffice it to say that we found the cost to be at least 40% cheaper than a Disneyland hotel, if not even cheaper.

HoJo 10

The wife and I (or is it Minnie?) arriving

You can also enjoy the Family Water Playground: “Our Castaway Cove pirate themed water park area is the only one in Anaheim outside of the Disney hotels. Kids of all ages will enjoy a 30-foot pirate ship with slides, water cannons, fountains, toddler wading pool, 200-gallon drench bucket and more. There is something for everyone at Castaway Cove, from your Captain to your tiniest buccaneer. Don’t miss the 15-person Hot Tub Spa, or the Garden Pool, a separate secluded area for swimming, relaxing or getting that California tan.” It was too cold for us to take advantage of these amenities when we visited. Oh well, next time!

Other amenities include free wi-fi, free parking, gym, restaurant and bar, convenience store, great staff, and of course, information on all-things Disney!

If you are planning a visit to Disneyland, there is an eatery you should visit, no matter where you choose to stay. Please read my review of The Pizza Press and I hope you enjoy your trip!

Goofy Baseball Figurine

Goofy has tried his hand at almost every sport throughout his illustrious career. He has not succeeded in any of them, but you have to give him points for trying!

I was delighted to find this bisque figurine of the man (dog?) in (one) of his many uniforms:

Goofy Figurine 1

Optimism before the game begins

This figurine is likely a nod to the Goofy Short entitled How to Play Baseball:

How to Play Baseball

Batter Up     He looks determined!

The uniform color is wrong, but the style is spot on     Goofy Figurine 3

Goofy Figurine 4     Goofy Figurine 2     Game on!

Goofy Figurine 5

Pre-1986 Walt Disney Productions

So if you ever want to learn how to play baseball… don’t ask Goofy!

WDW 25th Anniversary Guide & T-shirt

I love finding unusual items for my collection, and when I saw this Special Edition release for the 25th Anniversary of Walt Disney World, I just had to have it:

25th Anniversary Guide 012

12″ x 12″ Presentation Box

25th Anniversary Guide 13

One Anniversary Guide and T-shirt (medium)

This is from perhaps one of the most vilified promotions in WDW history. It included the hated Birthday Cake Castle, as pictured on the cover of the Anniversary Guide.

25th Anniversary Guide 001

1971-1996

I for one wish I could have seen the Birthday Cake Castle in person, if for no other reason than to say ‘I was there!’ ‘I saw it!’ But my trips to WDW would bracket this promotion.

Let’s have a look at the contents of the Anniversary Guide. As we do, I’ll point out the new attractions that were offered for this promotion:

25th Anniversary Guide 003

New: Hunchback of Notre Dame – A Musical Adventure

25th Anniversary Guide 004

New: Remember the Magic Parade / ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter

25th Anniversary Guide 005

New: Ellen DeGeneres Universe of Energy / Honey I Shrunk the Audience

I hear that as of 2016, the Honey I Shrunk the Audience attraction will be discontinued. Not perhaps the worse news?

I’d also like to mention that Epcot had some new Streetmosphere acts in the form of Stilt Birds and Moving Statues for 1996.

25th Anniversary Guide 006

New: Toy Story Parade

25th Anniversary Guide 007

New: Blizzard Beach

It’s also interesting to note that at this time, 1996, WDW had three water parks, as River Country was still in operation. Discovery Island was also open and the two attractions were advertised as two great places to be visited in one day.

25th Anniversary Guide 008

New: Planet Hollywood

25th Anniversary Guide 009

Old: The Disney Village Marketplace

25th Anniversary Guide 010

Character Dining chart and map

25th Anniversary Guide 011

WDW Maps: Three Parks (no Animal Kingdom yet)

25th Anniversary Guide 002

Back Cover

I hope you can take the time to enlarge the above pictures and enjoy a look into the past of WDW as it was found in 1996!

But this great box set also contained a very nice t-shirt with the promotional logo and a special surprise on the back:

25th Anniversary T-shirt 4 25th Anniversary T-shirt 5

Autographs from four Big Celebs!

25th Anniversary T-shirt 1     25th Anniversary T-shirt 3     25th Anniversary T-shirt 2

Mickey Inc. Made in the USA

I haven’t worn this t-shirt (it wouldn’t fit anyway!) instead choosing to leave it with the set. I enjoy opening it up from time to time for a look into the past of my favorite Disney park!

Mickey Mouse Kazoo

This product is somewhat misnamed. The Mickey Mouse Kazoo is more like a blowhorn that one would use at a college pep rally. Have a look for yourself:

MM Kazoo 1

Rah Rah Shish Boom Bah!

This is a basic plastic toy, probably from the 1970’s, that doesn’t do much. You can yell in it all you want, but little amplification will occur! Although I did notice a little more volume when I tried it.

MM Kazoo 4     MM Kazoo 3

No holes = little sound amplification

There is a thin metal plate between the two white discs which I presume vibrates to create at least the illusion of amplification.

MM Kazoo 2

But for a little kid, it was no doubt a lot of fun bellowing into it and imagining the kids on the next block could hear them!

MM Kazoo 5     Whatza matta kazoo?

Places: The Hollywood Sign in California

My wife and I traveled to California to attend the press event for the then-unreleased Disney Infinity video game at the El Capitan Theatre. While there, we couldn’t resist getting a shot of the Hollywood sign:

Hollywood Glitter

We did get closer

We drove up the mountain to get a closer look, but the road that leads directly to it is now closed due to the level of vandalism done to the sign over the years.

But this shot interested me because you normally think of the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, but here you see the same old level of ‘everyday’ intruding. The mess of hydro lines for example.

It’s amazing how mankind can screw up even what should be the most beautiful of scenery!

Cinderella Collector’s DVD Gift Set

I’d like to start by saying that the promises of Blu-ray have been overstated and under-realized. The claim of better picture quality and sound along with increased storage capacity were supposed to bring a whole new world to home entertainment.

The reality has been a marginal increase in presentation quality and, in most cases, less extras than we previously enjoyed on DVD. Much less if you compare today’s Blu-ray releases with yesterday’s Platinum 2-disc DVD Editions! And as you will see in this post, there simply is no comparison when you look at the Collector’s DVD Gift Sets:

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 003

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 002

Cinderella Collector’s DVD Gift Set

  • 2-disc Special Edition DVD (Platinum Edition)
  • 8 Exclusive Character Portraits
  • Collector Book
  • Film Frame from the movie

I have three of these Disney collectible DVD sets and I continue to be amazed at the value they yield. Let’s start with the Platinum Edition DVD:

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 004

Remember when the DVD case came in a cardboard sleeve with an opening cover? Remember that once you opened the DVD, you found a booklet inside describing what was on the discs, with navigational flow charts? Remember when ‘hours of extras’ meant hours of extras, not just 2 hours, if you were lucky? Then you remember the Platinum series of DVD’s!

The gift sets gave you this version of the DVD along with exclusive extras, like:

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 005     Cinderella DVD Gift Set 006

A Dream Come True ‘making of’ Storybook

As you can see from the picture above right, the illustrations in this publication are amazing! You’ll also find behind-the-scenes pictures and stories of production.

Next, this set has something truly special:

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 008

Film Frame: Cinderella on the staircase

But wait, that’s not all! You also get:

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 011

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 012  Cinderella DVD Gift Set 013

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 014  Cinderella DVD Gift Set 015

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 016  Cinderella DVD Gift Set 017

Cinderella DVD Gift Set 018  Cinderella DVD Gift Set 019

8 Exclusive Character Portraits by:

Ollie Johnston and Andre Deja

This set sold for upwards of $50.00 CAN when it first came out, and they are hard to find today, even on eBay. And when you do, the price is usually quite high. I’m glad I picked this up when I did!

So the next time you hear a commercial extolling the virtues of Blu-ray, remember this post, and the great Platinum DVD and Collector’s Gift Sets of yesterday.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Train Figurine Playset

I usually don’t buy these figurine playsets, as I find them a bit pricey for what you get. However, upon buying my first set and opening it, I find the quality to be very good. But why did I buy this particular set?

Let’s have a look and I’ll explain:

MCH Figurines 1

MCH Figurines 2

Six figures for $19.99 CAN

You may have noticed the train motif? I plan to set up a large Disney monorail and train display in my basement soon, and when I saw these figures, I knew they would be a fitting addition to make the whole thing look authentic!

MCH Mickey Engineer     First, we have Mickey Mouse as the Engineer

Donald Duck the Fireman. Not thrilled with the job!     MCH Donald Fireman

MCH Goofy Porter     MCH Pluto Helper

Goofy is the Porter, but needs a little help!

And what train trip would be complete without a passenger? So Minnie Mouse is ready to go:

MCH Minnie Passenger

MCH Pete Conductor     Oops! Needs her ticket from Pete, the Conductor!

These six train-themed figures from the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse television series should make all the difference to my monorail/train layout!
