Disney TEAPOT For One

‘Tea for Two’ may make a great song, but this Disney teapot is even greater because it can make tea for one! And it is covered in Hidden Mickeys:

disney-tea-pots-005

“Tea for one, and one for tea!”

These are really neat little teapots. They are a three-part product, if you don’t count the teapot lid.

disney-tea-pots-006

Notice that both the handle on the cup and teapot are actually Mickey’s arms? And who can miss the ‘Hidden Mickey’ plate?

disney-tea-pots-007

Hats off!

This item doesn’t have much in the way of markings. No company name or design line but just a very simple…

disney-tea-pots-008

At least we know it is copyrighted

So the next time you are a ‘party of one’ and fancy a ‘spot of tea’, don’t wait for Mrs. Potts to show up! Just get out your ‘for one teapot’ and enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures!

ARRIVING at Walt Disney World

Today we are sharing How We Know We’ve Arrived at Disney.

STAYING ON-SITE: CHECK-IN!

Check In 1

Nothing says “You have arrived!” like seeing a giant sign with the name of a Disney resort on it. This is where you will be staying and from where all the Disney magic you experience will start from. From parking the car to checking in to finding your room, don’t rush the process!

I’m going to show you how you can make the check-in at your resort a truly magical way to start your Disney vacation. If you follow my suggestions, you will truly know that you have arrived at Disney! I will be using Disney’s Art of Animation Resort as our model, with one picture from Pop Century thrown in for good measure.

FIRST: Approach the Check-in Desk.

Check In 2

Here you will meet your first friendly Cast Member. Enjoy the smiles and get ready to see more of them! These wonderful people are there to make your stay a memorable one.

SECOND: Get Your Bearings.

Check In 3

These maps are handy to find your building but also to familiarize yourself with the entire property. You’ll want to find the pools, restaurants and food service locations, the bus stop, and the resort retail store.

THIRD: Find Your Home-Away-From-Home.

Check In 4          Check In 5

Check In 6          Check In 7

Check In Room

Squaring away your things before you set out to explore is always a good idea. You can also use the time to relax and freshen up after your long journey to Disney. Once you have put everything away, it’s time to…

FOUR: Explore Your Resort.

Check In 8     Check In 9

This is a great way to get your first taste of Disney magic and to take those vacation photos that everyone back home will be waiting to see. So take lots of shots and pose with everything in sight!

FIVE: Visit the Resort Store.

Check In 10

You will visit many retail locations during your visit. Some of these you will visit voluntarily while others will be thrust upon you. For example, after most big attractions you will exit into retail spaces and be jostled by some rabid shoppers and many others who just want to get out of there and hit the next ride! Visiting your resorts retail location will give you a chance to browse the merchandise at an unhurried pace.

In conclusion, the basic idea here is that checking into your on-site resort will whet your appetite for everything to come. Usually most of us arrive at the resort later in the day and after an exhausting drive or harried plane flight. Try to resist the urge to rush right off to a park. Instead, relax and enjoy your check-in  experience, for it truly is how you will know that you have arrived at Disney!

Things: GOOFY Folk Art

We all love the artwork turned out by the Disney Studios and the many artists that are commissioned to render our favorite characters. But some of us are inspired to try to create pieces of our own.

This unknown artist created a silhouette out of plywood and painted one side. See if you can recognize the character from the back:

goofy-folk-art-002

Obvious, if the title of this post didn’t give it away already!

So it’s Mickey’s faithful old friend, Goofy:

goofy-folk-art-001

And he’s in a hurry to get nowhere!

This was on a wall in a mechanics garage for years. It was mostly buried behind odds and ends and parts when I glimpsed the familiar shape. My friend, who owns the garage, gave it to me knowing my love for Disney.

I’m not going to touch up the paint or repair it in any way. It will be hung on one of the walls in my new office/studio when it is completed.

Disney Animators’ Collection LILO Doll

I’ve been looking at this merchandise line for some time but haven’t found a character that I truly liked. The Kristoff doll from Frozen came close but I just hate that movie so much I couldn’t bring myself to buy him!

But before we go much further, what exactly is the Disney Animator’s Collection? From the back of the packaging: “Celebrating the heritage of Disney animation with the Disney animators’ collection, created under the guidance of Disney’s most renowned animators and designers, these young renditions of your favorite characters are brought to life with creativity and imagination.

But at a local Disney Store I finally found the one character that I think looks the best with this treatment:

animators-collection-lilo-003

This doll was designed by Byron Howard who worked on Pocahontas, Mulan, Brother Bear, and of course, Lilo & Stitch.

animators-collection-lilo-004               animators-collection-lilo-006

The packaging for this merchandise line is quite good. The character studies around the box are nice and the information on the back fully explains the intent of the product.

animators-collection-lilo-007

These dolls all have the same body with legs that will bend at the hips for a sitting position, arms that pivot at the shoulders, and a head that turns. The only thing different between the dolls is the head sculpt, hair, and costuming.

animators-collection-lilo-008  animators-collection-lilo-009  animators-collection-lilo-010

Lilo’s flip-flops come off as does her satchel. Her homemade dolly Scrump can be carried in the satchel or put on her wrist using a strap attached to the back. Of all the dolls in this series, I think the expression on Lilo’s face best represents the character.

The Disney Animators’ Collection line sells for $24.95 US or $26.95 CAN. This line has been available for some time and I don’t think it’s doing too well. There is always a good selection available at The Disney Store whenever I go which tells me they aren’t flying off the shelves!

FUN FACT: I noticed another doll for sale at The Disney Store which was from the up-coming animated feature Moana. The doll may have been a child version of the main female character herself, Moana. The interesting thing was that the body of the doll was identical to the ones used for the Disney Animators’ Collection line and the packaging was identical in shape but with different graphics.

So why didn’t Disney just release this doll as part of the Animators’ line?

Found Disney: Mr. BEAN Tells Time with Mickey

I recently purchased a DVD set of the complete Mr. Bean shorts. You’ll recognize this name as the mime-like character created by Rowan Atkinson. And of course I noticed immediately that there was a Disney tie-in!

In the very first episode, where Mr. Bean has to take a math test, he begins to empty his briefcase, bringing out three funny objects. One is (perhaps) an English Bobby, the second thing is a bendable Pink Panther figure, and the third is:

mr-bean-and-mickey-002

Well, hello Mickey!

Yes, even Mr. Bean is a Disney fan! He brings out a vintage Mickey Mouse alarm clock to time his test. Of course he messes up the whole affair but the alarm clock does go off right on time!

For another Mickey Mouse alarm clock sighting, please check out my earlier post entitled Mickey Visits the Partridge Family over at My Dreams of Disney.

Places: Weird Fun at the Old Car Festival in Greenfield Village

We were thrilled to be able to once again get an annual membership at The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village! Next to Disney these two attractions are by far the best the States has to offer.

One of the highlights of this year was the Old Car Festival held on September 10th and 11th. We attended on the Saturday as the Village is open until 9pm for extra fun. So just what goes on at an old car festival? Weird and fun stuff:

F U N

greenfield-village-jj-007

To misquote Muppets star Sam the Eagle – “It’s called ‘A Salute to All Cars’, But Mostly Fords.” After all, it is ‘The Universal Car’!

W E I R D

greenfield-village-jj-017

Did you know that in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s you could buy a car from the Sears Catalogue? It came in a crate and you put it together yourself! It was called the Model K and apparently the one I saw at the show was number 3,138 in the production run.

F U N

greenfield-village-jj-036

You can always take a ride in a Model T Ford when visiting the Village but on this special occasion the crowds were too large to allow pictures to be taken as you sat in the cars. So this Model T Hack was set up off to the side for photo ops. Here we are with our friends.

F U N

greenfield-village-jj-043

And while you’re in the mood for posing check out the millenary shop and try on some hand-made hats. They also have some men’s selections for those who haven’t quite got in touch with their feminine sides.

W E I R D

greenfield-village-jj-061

Would you ride this? It is perhaps the first motorcycle ever made with a commercial intention. It was never mass-produced and maybe you can figure out why? At least it had training wheels!

W E I R D

greenfield-village-jj-066

Even cars can have a mini-me! Usually you marvel over how well a restoration was done on a full-size model but this guy went above and beyond. And if you look really close you can see that each size of car has an identical monkey driver!

F U N

greenfield-village-jj-073

This Model T conversion was just so durn cute! But. A commentator pointed out that if the tank was filled with any liquid it would overload the chassis of this 1/2 ton vehicle and basically break it in half! So… fun idea, but a weird application.

W E I R D

greenfield-village-jj-086

Not since Hitler’s grey Triple Axle Staff Car have we seen a six-wheeler like this! This was a one-off conversion based on a Model T and designed to carry passengers from a hotel to different points of interest. It was actually a four-wheel drive before Ford had offered that! But it was the rear four wheels that turned. Weird? Weird.

And one last weird thing you might see during the Old Car Festival:

W E I R D

greenfield-village-jj-001

I’m sorry you had to see this. I’m sorry I had to see this. But I saw it and so now you’ve seen it and it can’t be unseen! Actually, she’s kind of cute! Maybe I’ll ask her to marry me…

And there you have it. Some of the weird and fun things you could have seen if you had attended the Old Car Festival at Greenfield Village. Now go out and buy a membership and join us there next year!

TOP 5 Indications You Are a Hopeless DISNEY FANatic

Well, I wouldn’t call myself hopeless. But others would! Since my first visit to Walt Disney World as an adult in 2006 I have been hooked on The Mouse. I don’t take it overboard (no, really) but I do enjoy the wholesome and oft-times folksy charm of the Disney brand.

But maybe you’re wondering if you are a hopeless Disney fan? If so, I think I can help you to answer that question. Here is my Top Five List of indications that you are indeed a hopeless Disney fan:

INDICATION FIVE

Your favorite movie is a Disney animated classic

movie-poster

From the Golden era to the modern renaissance to today’s instant classics everyone has a favorite Disney animated movie. But you: Your favorite movie of all time is a Disney animated movie! Citizen Kane? The Bodyguard? James Bond? Garbage compared to Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, and Big Hero 6 as far as you’re concerned!

INDICATION FOUR

Your house looks like a Disney Store

disney-store

You say you just collect a few things here and there, but your house guests get a different impression when they enter room after room of Disney merchandise. To steal a bit from Jeff Foxworthy: When The Disney Store calls you when they run low on stock… you may be a hopeless Disney fan!

INDICATION THREE

You visit a Disney Park at least yearly

disneyland

Walt Disney World. Disneyland. Disney’s California Adventure. If it’s in North America, you’ve been there! And if you’ve been to a Disney park abroad? Man, you really are a hopeless Disney fan!

INDICATION TWO

You have a Disney Blog

disney-nouns

Oh my goodness! I just realized… I really am a hopeless Disney fan! Yes, in my case, it all started with a blog called Disleelandia back in 2009. I then wrote for other sites like Chip & Company, Disney Dose, the original Theme Park Press site, as well as numerous guest posts on other sites like My Dreams of Disney.

Hello. My name is Lee. I have a blogging problem.

INDICATION ONE

You read about being a hopeless Disney fan

a-disney-fan

Admit it: If you could have this ceiling fan in your house, you would! Admit it: You see Hidden Mickeys everywhere! Admit it: You know more about Walt Disney than you’re own grandfather! Admit it: You have more Disney t-shirts than plain ones! Admit it: You have worn Mickey Ears outside a Disney park! Admit it: If Disney became illegal, you’d buy it on the street! Just admit it: You are a hopeless Disney fan!

Could This Be CRUELLA De VIL’s Real Car?

I know I claimed to have found her real car before (see the post entitled Disney Cars for Real) but this time I think I’ve really discovered it! Here is a screen shot of her animated car from 101 Dalmatians:

cruella-de-villes-car

In the live-action adaptions her car is white and black and is based on a Panther De Ville. In the television series her car is also white and black and is based on a Zimmer Golden Spirit.

Not much is available on the Internet about the make or model of the animated red and black version. But while visiting The Greenfield Village during the Old Car Festival I managed to snap these shots:

greenfield-village-jj-068

greenfield-village-jj-069

1929 Auburn 8-120

Cruella wasn’t on hand but is this a match for her animated car or what? And although it would have looked more sinister if she was standing beside it herself, I think I managed to get a picture of one of her henchmen sitting in the Model T Ford in the background. But is he Jasper or Horace?

Anyway, I was glad to be able to see such an iconic Disney vehicle for real!

FUN FACT: In the original 101 Dalmatians books Cruella’s car is white and black like a zebra. But it’s easy to imagine why that coloring would have been hard to animate against largely white backgrounds with the bulk of Disney’s animated movie being ‘shot’ in winter. But red and black would stand out!

Of course, this doesn’t explain why Disney set a animated feature about predominantly white dogs in the season of winter…

PRECISION SERIES Lightning McQueen & Mater

I have got to stop visiting toy stores! I already have many variations of the die-cast models from the Cars animated movies by Pixar. I don’t have many of them on display because I just don’t have the room to do so. So naturally…

precision-series-cars-007

I buy more!

But these versions of the die-cast offerings are special (yeah, and my wife says I’m special too). They are a part of a larger play set produced by Mattel. You can learn all about this set by clicking this link where you will see a slideshow of other models available and a short video showing what Precision Series Radiator Springs looks like! And you might recognize this guy:

john

If you want to see the above diorama in person, it is on display at Disney’s California Adventure, I believe in Sarge’s Surplus Hut.

I picked up my models at Wal-Mart where they had only four characters: The Sheriff, Sarge, and of course Lightning McQueen and Mater:

precision-series-cars-002     precision-series-cars-005     precision-series-cars-008

precision-series-cars-003     precision-series-cars-004     precision-series-cars-009

Once out of the packaging each model is enclosed in a case for display purposes:

precision-series-cars-cases-002

Each model comes with a plate that looks like it could be used as a key fob. McQueen’s hood opens and Mater has a working headlight and…

precision-series-cars-cases-001

A working tow hook!

This is a first for this character in die-cast. Most of the characters have a thing that they do, either on their own, or when they interact with their playset ‘home’.

But no matter how cool this series of die-cast models is going to be I won’t be buying any more. Cost and display space forbid it! But if I could afford to buy the entire town of Radiator Springs? I’d throw away the double bed in the spare room!

Each Precision Series die-cast model retails at $14.95 CAN. If you’re interested.
