Mickey Mouse ANIMATED Talking Cordless PHONE

If I had to pick my favorite kind of disneyana… I couldn’t do it! But animated character phones would be in the top five for sure. I have quite a growing collection so far but am always looking for that new addition.

Here is my latest find:

I haven’t seen too many of this style around so I was delighted to obtain one for myself. Let’s take a closer look:

Unlike the other character phones I have, this one is a cordless version, in that the handset is not attached to the body of the phone by a cord. It charges in a holder and can be found with the use of a locator button if misplaced.

There are two animation features: First, Mickey’s head moves from side to side as he speaks. Second, his left arm swings from side to side so as to point to the handset.

And here is what Mickey will say when the phone rings:

Oh boy! A phone call! Ha ha!

Huh, Gee. I wonder who it could be?

It’s for you! Ha Ha!

Well, what’a ya know. It’s for you!

Ha Ha! Hi ya Pal! You’ve got a phone call!

Pixar’s CARS ROAD TRIP Die-cast Models

I am officially giving up. I’ve said again and again that I was not going to buy another version of the die-cast model cars from the Pixar movie Cars. But what have I done? During a recent trip to Wal-mart I just happened to be walking through the toy department (on my way to the manly tool department) when these little guys called out to me:

The next thing I knew I was carrying three packages of die-cast models to the cash register to give Disney more of my hard-earned money.

And why was I so weak? How did Disney/Pixar suck me in to buying my umpteenth Lightning McQueen? Because he has a surf board on his roof. Sally has a roof carrier. And Sarge is decked out with survival gear. Oh, and they all have trailer hitches.

Yes folks, it’s the Road Trip County Edition! Or RD TRIP in promotional script. I’m assuming Disney will soon release the RD TRIP Trailer Editions to go with the hitches!

Disney Store RAPUNZEL Deluxe Feature 16″ Doll

My wife and I have been eying this next collectible at The Disney Store for a while now and just finally gave in to the temptation and paid the price to make her our own.

This is a nice line of 16″ singing Princess dolls that caught our attention with the beautiful packaging:

Front, side, and back

When on the shelve and obviously still in the box, the packaging has a demonstration mode whereby Rapunzel sings two lines of one of her signature songs ‘I See the Light’. To activate this mode you simply open the front flap of the box. Due to a wire connection, the magic begins:

Lantern and hair light up

Once out of the box, you simply place the lantern over Rapunzel’s hand for a fuller version of the song. The level of detail is quite good, making this doll a truly lovely display piece:

Most dolls I see fail to get the face right, but this release nails Rapunzel’s expressive eyes:

We are undecided as to whether we will let Rapunzel out of her tower (box, actually) so for now she will have to await our decision inside her new cardboard and plastic prison. She does not come with a display stand which is a major omission for such an expensive show doll.

This was released in 2015 and sells currently for around $60.00 CAN. Ariel (The Little Mermaid) and Elsa (Frozen) are also available.

MICKEY MOUSE CLUB Song Hits LP RECORD

As Disney fans we are all Mouseketeers at heart! Even though most of us were not around in the early 1950’s to see The Mickey Mouse Club in its original broadcast run, we might remember seeing episodes in syndication or on DVD collections.

And then there’s the merchandise that helps us to relive the fun and music of this iconic program! Merchandise like this:

Disneyland Records LP – 1975

Released some 20 years after the original program this is a very nice keepsake for any MMC fan. As you can see, it contains songs along with a personal Mouseketeer cast photo album. A list of the songs can be seen below:

Unfortunately, I didn’t realize until I got this item home that it contained the wrong record inside. The LP that it has is still featuring the Mouseketeers but singing about the Mousekedances that were performed on the show. You can read the playlist by enlarging the album labels below:

A very nice selection of music!

The real feature of this LP is the 16-page cast photo album. They contain stills from the show along with some pretty terrible copy along with some sketch artwork of Disney characters.

The album cover is in pretty bad shape with a name written on the cover and the record is a bit scratchy. With it also containing the wrong record I normally wouldn’t have bought it. But on the strength of the 16-page cast photo album alone I relented and paid too much!

I also had to go down into a dank and stinky basement and risk disease to obtain it, so I hope you appreciate what I went through to bring this vintage item to you today! I think I should get a medal. Or a free tetanus shot. At this point, I think I’d like the shot!

Mickey Mouse SKIPPING ROPE

Skipping is one the oldest outdoor activities for children. Most often little girls will play various skipping games together while the boys look upon the ‘sport’ as sissy. But boys have been known to jump in from time to time!

Skipping rhymes have been recorded in all cultures where skipping is played. Examples of English-language rhymes have been found going back to at least the 17th century. But I think this skipping rope might only be from the 1960’s or 1970’s:

Given the amount of rope attached to the two handles I have to assume that these would have been made for a child between the ages of 5 and possibly up to 8.

So what skipping rhyme would you use to play with this rope? May I suggest this one based on the Disney character of Cinderella:

Cinderella dressed in yellow, went downstairs) to kiss her fellow, by mistake kissed a snake, how many doctors will it take? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 etc. (Go to 20 then go down to the next line)
Cinderella dressed in blue, went upstairs to tie her shoe, made a mistake and tied a knot, how many knots will she make? 1, 2, 3, etc.
Cinderella dressed in green, went downtown to buy a ring, made a mistake and bought a fake, how many days before it breaks? 1, 2, 3, etc.

Why Disney’s LET IT GO Is a Bad Song

A Disney song has always been there to move the story along. It can define a character or delve into their motivation, or further the plot. Of course, it’s also designed to stick in your head so that you will love the movie and rush out to buy the soundtrack!

Fair enough.

But I also happen to feel that any song that plays in a children’s movie should be socially responsible. The content of the lyrics should promote good behavior, sound principles, and motivate the listener to be better in some way. I speak of songs sung by the protagonist, or hero, and not the villain. A song sung by a villain is designed to explain their reasons for being nasty and the bad ideas within the lyrics are shown to be wrong when the villain gets his or her comeuppance in the end!

So why do I say that the song Let It Go from the movie Frozen is bad? I know I’m going to be in a minority on this but I feel if people actually read the lyrics instead of just singing along with the tune, they just might begin to see some problems.  So let’s begin.

Let It Go was written by Robert Lopez, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Emanuel Kiriakou and is  Copyright © Warner/Chappell Music, Inc, Walt Disney Music Company. I obtained the lyrics from Google Play Music and trust that they are accurate. I will show the lyrics one stanza at a time, analyze, then move on to the next stanza:

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen.
A kingdom of isolation,
and it looks like I’m the Queen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in;
Heaven knows I’ve tried

Things start off well with Elsa simply surveying her new surroundings and comparing them to her inner turmoil. Which is admittedly great and understandably so!

Don’t let them in,
don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel,
don’t let them know
Well now they know

Again, Elsa is honestly expressing her feelings about her treatment at the hands of her parents. Being told not to use her powers and then hiding her away from the world because of one accident was a knee-jerk reaction taken to an extreme level! Bad parenting doesn’t begin to cover this situation.

We begin to see a hint of the problem when Elsa callously flips off the line ‘Well now they know’. Yes they, her subjects, do, as their entire land is frozen, live stock and crops are dead, businesses are ruined, and if this was the real world, many are likely to die due to being completely unprepared for such a drastic change in the climate.

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore

This signature line from the chorus is the one sung heartily by everyone, even little children. But what are these lyrics actually saying? The idea is that when you can no longer handle a bad situation, let go (or lose control as Elsa does) no matter what the consequences are to yourself or others.

Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don’t care
what they’re going to say
Let the storm rage on.
The cold never bothered me anyway

And this is perhaps the worst part of this song! Slamming the door in the face of the problem is not going to solve anything. Not caring while being aware of the bad situation caused by one’s decisions and cruelly saying ‘let it go on’ because ‘it doesn’t bother me’ is again not a lesson to teach small children!

It’s funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can’t get to me at all

Here Elsa has run away from her problems far enough to make them seem small and trivial, when in fact they are big and impactful. She is happy to be safe while everyone else is still in great danger.

It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me,
I’m free!

So now that her powers are ‘outed’ she chooses to see just how much damage she can do with them instead of seeing if she can fix things and prove everyone wrong about her. We need to know and accept what is right and wrong and adhere to certain rules to have a safe and working society. Someone who feels ‘free’ from these concepts inevitably hurts others.

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You’ll never see me cry
Here I stand
And here I’ll stay
Let the storm rage on

Now Elsa decides not to face her issues but bury them deep inside her and simply let the world go on without her. She is also okay with the world having to deal with the mess she left behind, just letting ‘the storm rage on.’

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I’m never going back, the past is in the past

The past is never ‘in the past’ until there is a resolution to whatever the problem is. That is why we have coined the term ‘closure’. People spend serious time and money on trying to deal with traumatic events in their past so that they can have a better future. Elsa is in effect ceasing to live.

Let it go, let it go
And I’ll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand
In the light of day
Let the storm rage on

The cold never bothered me anyway!

Elsa should never have been made to feel that she had to be perfect, nor that the way to achieve this was to hide who and what she was. But to decide to be, in effect, a bad girl, is not a healthy alternative!

Lastly, this final line is perhaps the most damaging lesson this song teaches. That if something doesn’t bother you, who cares about anyone else? Loving, caring, and well-adjusted people care about others, even if those people have made mistakes that hurt them or don’t seem at first to appreciate the effort.

This song seems to say that if you are treated poorly, become as bad as the abusers. Whereas I think we can all agree that the better path is to take the high road and rise above the crowd.

Does this look like a good attitude?

Conclusion: It should be noted that Elsa endured horrible treatment by the two people who should have loved and protected her, her parents. The damage that this would do to a young child is incalculable! So perhaps we can understand her position. But I put forth that her song is that of a villain explaining the reasons for doing what she does, and certainly not a song of empowerment. Remember that the Ice Queen in the original book was a villain and I don’t think Disney intended Elsa to be viewed as well as she has been, but has just run with it for merchandising dollars.

Why this song is held in such a high regard is that somehow Elsa has been cast as a suppressed victim who has every right to act as she does. And she doesn’t act well! In fact, she accidentally freezes Anna’s heart, and instead of trying to help, creates an Ice Monster to remove her from her presence. This monster then goes on to immediately try to kill Anna. I guess that didn’t bother Elsa either?

Also, many fixate on the ‘sisterly love’ angle of the movie, but again, I contend that there is no sisterly love, just one sister’s love (Anna’s) for her sibling (Elsa), which is not returned.

Now that we have analyzed the lyrics stanza by stanza, I would like to recommend that you consider Anna as the true hero of Frozen and consider looking to her as a role model for your little girl or boy, and not Elsa, even if she does have a catchy song.

FUN FACT: Note the shape of the balusters in the railing in the above picture. Does the repeating shape remind you of anything? It resembles the chest insignia of Wonder Woman, the ultimate symbol of female empowerment. Coincidence, or subliminal message?

Disney Store Elite Series R2-D2

We’re back in the die-cast business again today as we check out a beloved character from the Star Wars series of movies. I’m a ‘original three’ fan (Star Wars fans know what that means) and was guardedly optimistic when I heard that Disney would be chartering the course for future installments in the franchise. But with Star Wars: The Force Awakens I was able to put my fears to rest!

But through all the ups and downs of this blockbuster mega-hit has been the little droid with heart, R2-D2:

There is a whole line of Star Wars characters in this series exclusively at The Disney Store. The packaging is very well done and I considered leaving the little astromech droid in his paper pod. Usually a collectible figure will retain a higher value if left in its original packaging but here’s why I released him.

With the crash of the collectibles market in 1986 prices have plummeted. In or out of a box these items just aren’t selling like they used to. Add to that the tendency for companies like Disney to release ‘collectible’ toys in ridiculously high production numbers and you can see why there is no point preserving (M.I.B.) or collecting multiples of this line.

That all said, I recommend picking up some of these excellent action figures! The R2-D2 example is very well done with a commendable level of detail. His side arms allow him to pivot forward and backwards and his center ‘foot’ pivots as well.

He can also do a balancing act:

What I was disappointed in was that his head does not swivel. Being a solid lump of die-cast metal though I guess I can understand that it would have been hard to achieve this. But it would have taken this action figure from excellent to awesome!

The benefit of un-boxing the little guy is that he comes with a display plate that you can use to show off your resourceful droid:

This line of action figures retails at $26.95 US or $33.95 CAN but I was able to get mine on sale (already) for just $18.00 CAN.

Disney Lesney/Matchbox DIECAST CARS from 1979

I love die-cast cars and especially if they contain a Disney character in the driver’s seat. I found two examples from the same line recently and was able to catch up with them while they were on the ‘open road’:

This line was produced by the Lesney Products & Company Limited for Matchbox. The cars themselves are the usual size for a Matchbox vehicle but the figures are obviously oversized! Let’s have a closer look:

Goofy seems to be driving a Volkswagen Beetle while Donald may be driving a Volkswagen Dune Buggy.

I don’t know how many cars were released in each series but I did find out that Series 1 had Mickey Mouse in a red fire truck.

These are indeed die-cast cars as plastic hadn’t taken over yet back in 1979, and thank goodness! There is one last detail to point out:

Can you read this license plate?

Could it be VB-5 standing for Volkswagen Beetle 5, the ‘5’ relating to its order in the car release schedule? That’s the best I can figure. Do you have another idea?

BASIL of BAKER STREET Disney Store Ornament

I love Disney. I love Sherlock Holmes. So I was beside myself when I found The Great Mouse Detective animated movie! It didn’t get a lot of love at the box office but it is one of my all-time favorites.

Naturally when I was shopping recently at The Disney Store and came across this:

I just had to have it!

Here Basil and Dr. David Q. Dawson (Barrie Ingham and Val Bettin respectively) are looking over the list that Fidget dropped when robbing the toy store. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Then watch the movie! It’s great!

Um, I think that papers blank!

In any case, Basil will get something from it anyway. The Disney Store is now selling a superior line of ornaments. The level of detail is magnificent! For an example, look at Dr. Dawson’s butt in the picture above. No, go ahead. He won’t mind! Notice the hole in his britches that allows his tail to protrude. They didn’t just glue the tail on the back of the pants, but made a hole!

This film is not known by many young Disney fans as it came out in 1986. It is significant for its use of computer animation to augment the traditional hand-drawn animation, such as in the clock tower scene. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Then watch the movie! It’s great!

They’re still working on the clue

What is special about this line of merchandise is that they are featuring older and more obscure characters, like Basil and Robin Hood, among others. These are exclusive to The Disney Store so be sure to check them out!

I just hope Professor Ratigan (voiced by Vincent Price) doesn’t get there first and buy them all up so you can’t have any! Don’t know who I’m talking about? Then watch the movie! It’s great!

FUN FACT: Well, more of a theory really. I also visited The Hallmark Store to check out their ornaments for the 2016 season. But I noticed that there were very few Disney ornaments on display. Only two, in fact. And there were only about eight Disney ornaments available in all.

Is Disney pulling out of or curtailing the amount of ornaments released through Hallmark due to this new line of Disney Store ornaments? Or is it just too early for the full line to be released at Hallmark? Time will tell. And while you’re waiting, watch The Great Mouse Detective! It’s great!

Jungle Book ’67 VERSUS Jungle Book ’16

It’s a battle 49 years in the making but the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ has finally arrived! Today we are pitting the 1967 original animated film against its 2016 live-action remake. So we have classic animation vs. CGI and tried-and-true voice actors vs. today’s A-list talents.

Who will win? To find out we are going to pit these two films head-to-head in five categories. The one who wins the most categories will be the best. The original film will henceforth be referenced as JB-67 and the new movie as JB-16.

~ SPOILER ALERT ~

Although I don’t go into too much detail about the new film, I do mention certain plot points that may ruin things for you if you haven’t seen it yet. You are warned!

CATEGORY ONE

Premise

Random Tiger Attack vs. Shere Khan Murder Plot

Both movies stick pretty close to the same plot: Mowgli is abandoned in the jungle, he is raised by wolves, the tiger hates and fears him, his friends end up removing him from danger. Hi-jinks ensue between these events.

JB-67 keeps opens by having Mowgli lost in the jungle after a random tiger attack whereas JB-16 has Sher Khan killing Mowgli’s father and continuing his murderous vendetta against the son. Sher Khan simply hates man in JB-16 and his fear of fire isn’t really the driving force behind the villains actions, which helped to make the reasons for his actions realistic and understandable in the original. In fact, I felt his motivation was a bit unfocused which hurt the new film somewhat.

Also, Mowgli ends up leaving the jungle in JB-67 by going to the Man Village which doesn’t happen in JB-16. For this reason I think the original film had a more rewarding ending.

The winner of this category is JB-67 for delivering a satisfying movie with more heart.

CATEGORY TWO

Characters

Old Interpretation vs. New Interpretation

JB-67 definitely has a lighter tone than JB-16. It rolls along smoother with more fun and with much more engaging character development. Let’s take a look at the main characters one by one:

Shere Khan – You just can’t beat Sebastian Cabot’s voice work on this character! The tiger in the remake looks like it has the mange.

Bagheera and Baloo – Again the original voice actors did a marvelous job of bringing these characters to life, especially Phil Harris with Baloo! But Bill Murray gave a game performance and I’d have to say that no one else could have pulled the big bear off as well.

Kaa – Swapping genders for certain characters in remakes is all the rage now and I agree with it to add more diversity to the cast. But again, poor Scarlett Johansson had a big voice box to fill in replacing Sterling Holloway!

King Louie – Here Christopher Walkin just didn’t do it for me. Louis Prima knocked this character out of the park in the original. However, I have to say that having Louie be a rare giant orangutan was one of the highlights of the new film!

Most of the other support characters were fine in both films and we’ll cover Mowgli next. So obviously I’m going to award the win in this category to JB-67. The original voice talent was just too perfect for anyone to successfully replace them!

CATEGORY THREE

Mowgli

Bruce Reitherman vs. Neel Sethi

All through the remake I just couldn’t warm up to Neel Sethi as Mowgli. I’m not alone in feeling that the original movie was as close to perfection as a Disney movie gets and this was certainly in no small part due to the voice actors! Bruce Reitherman was able to imbue Mowgli with a greater range of wonder, courage, and fear.

I have to award another win to JB-67 for simply outclassing the new talent.

CATEGORY FOUR

Music

Original Versions vs. Remakes

The Sherman Brothers. What can you say? I was both glad and worried that the remake kept some of the iconic songs in the movie. Unfortunately it was my disquiet that won out as the new versions played. Because the songs were butchered! Sorry, but it has to be said.

I can’t even bear to talk about it so I’ll just give the win to JB-67 and move on.

CATEGORY FIVE

Effects

Animation vs. Live-action/CGI Hybrid

Both movies are visually pleasing. The animation of JB-67 was basic but immersive while the live-action/CGI effects of JB-16 were done quite well, although some of the animals could have had more realistic movements.

But I think I can finally award a win to JB-16 here! Technology has indeed come a long way since 1967.

RESULTS

Winner: JB-67

I have to admit I am not surprised by the 4-1 outcome in favor of JB-67! I just didn’t have as great a connection with the remake as I did with the original. JB-16 tried hard but just didn’t quiet achieve the emotional level of JB-67.

Remakes are hard to pull off and I really believe, although it did good business and got fair reviews, JB-16 is not a worthy addition to the Disney canon. Do you agree? To see another battle between an animated original and a live-action remake, see my review of Pete’s Dragon.
