Pixar’s Toy Story 3 BUTTERCUP Plush

Buttercup, Oh Butter Buttercup
.
OK, maybe that riff was actually about lollipop, but it seems to fit so fanciful a character as Pixar’s Buttercup from Toy Story 3.
.
I’ve been searching for this plush for months, but perhaps in an unexpected turn, not for myself. No, this little unicorn has been turned over to a seven year old boy who just fell in love with Buttercup. His mother works with me and lamented one day that she couldn’t find a mid-sized plush of the character for her son.
.
Of course, I did:
.
.
6 inches of cuteness!
.
The Irish Rovers (a Canadian band, I might add) did a fun song about Unicorns back in 1968. It was written by Shel Silverstein, and perhaps you’ll recognize the lyrics:
.
A long time ago, when the Earth was green
There was more kinds of animals than you’ve ever seen
They’d run around free while the Earth was being born
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn
.
There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you’re born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn
.
The Lord seen some sinning and it gave Him pain
And He says, “Stand back, I’m going to make it rain”
He says, “Hey Noah, I’ll tell you what to do
Build me a floating zoo,
and take some of those…
.
Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you’re born
Don’t you forget my unicorns
.
Old Noah was there to answer the call
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started to fall
He marched the animals two by two
And he called out as they came through
Hey Lord,
.
I’ve got green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I’m so forlorn
I just can’t find no unicorns”
.
And Noah looked out through the driving rain
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was falling
Oh, them silly unicorns
.
There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried, “Close the door because the rain is falling
And we just can’t wait for no unicorns”
.
The ark started moving, it drifted with the tide
The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
That’s why you never see unicorns to this very day
.
You’ll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you’re born
You’re never gonna see no unicorns

.
Admit it: You were singing along! But don’t despair, you can still see unicorns, if only in the animated world of Pixar.
.
If you want to relive the Unicorn Song every day, you can download a ring tone at this link. You can also watch a video montage in honor of the Unicorn while listening to the lyrics above sung by a cover band. Enjoy!

Market Road Antiques in St. Jacobs, ON

.
Market Road Antiques
.
I recently went to St. Jacobs, Ontario, for two business seminars. Although they took up most of my time during the day, I was free to explore this beautiful area by night.
.
Of course, being a Disneyana collector, my main focus was to find great places to browse and buy new treasures for my collection. As luck would have it, there was a fantastic antique store just minutes from my hotel!
.
Their tag line is: “100 Vendors, thousands of treasures, millions of memories!”
.
And with aisles like this one, I don’t doubt them:
.
.
Miles of aisles!
.
I naturally found quite a lot of great Disney stuff. Like these two cabinets, all from just one vendor. I was in Disneyana heaven:
.
.
I’ll have some close-up shots of these items in later posts
.
But in the interest of sharing just some of the wonders to be found in this great place, here are just a few of the items I found featuring Mickey Mouse:
.
.
I came so close to buying this one!
.
I highly recommend Market Road Antiques. The staff is very helpful, and the owner was very nice to let me take photographs of his business, and many of the collectibles within! Of course, I also dropped a considerable amount of money in his cash register, so…
.
If you would like to visit Market Road Antiques, here is the information you’ll need:

Home Depot – Pooh and Einstein Paint Colors

An Unlikely Pairing

.
This booklet from Home Depot features two distinctly different Disney franchises: Winnie the Pooh and Baby Einstein.
.
We start off with the Bear-of-little-brain:
.
.
Again, a happy little child is the result
.
The booklet continues with something for the brainiac baby:
.
.
A small sampling of the colors that could make these projects complete:
.
.
Poohs Kite
.
.
Three Cheers for Pooh
.
.
Smackeral of Hunny
.
So now that you have a host of Disney ideas, don’t forget to pick up your paint, brushes, rollers, and an assistant! After all, only in a Disney movie will the work do itself!

Home Depot – Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Paint Colors

Bold Statement

.
Any child would love to live in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse! And although that is impossible, thanks to Home Depot and Disney, you can at least give them the next best thing:
.
.
Toodles should appear any time now!
.
.
Color selection is bold and primary
.
.
This booklet also has ideas on a Tigger/Pooh themed room
.
.
Again, the Home Depot I visited didn’t have many of the colors called for here (which is strange, being as they have the booklets) but they did have some similar choices available:
.
.
Mickey’s Pants
.
.
Mouse Ears
.
.
Sorcerers Hat
.
Although the booklets show the color samples in shapes appropriate to the theme (gears and clouds here) I believe all of the color samples available are to be found on Hidden Mickey cards.
.
We’ll see you tomorrow for the last of our booklets from Home Depot, this time featuring Winnie the Pooh and Baby Einstein.

Home Depot – Fairies Paint Colors

Children’s Room Make-over

.
Disney has always partnered with retailers to create unique merchandise. But this cross-promotion is special in that it doesn’t just sell a product, but a style as well.
.
The following booklet (available at Home Depot paint counters) gives ideas on how to decorate your child’s bedroom. Designs are suggested with a host of Disney-inspired colors available to carry out the make-over:
.
.
Disney Fairies
.
.
10 colors are recommended
.
.
Literature is provided with tips for project execution
.
.
Hoped-for result: A happy child!
.
.
Bathroom renovations also possible
.
The section allotted for this cross-promotion at Home Depot is not large, but does supply a wide variety of Disney-inspired colors. Each is presented on a Hidden Mickey card:
.
.
Prince Charming
.
.
Storytime Blue
.
.
Friendly Forest
.
None of these Disney-themed colors are called for in the Fairies booklet, but the Home Depot I visited didn’t have the butterfly-shaped samples in stock.
.
Be sure to visit us again tomorrow as we reveal the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse designs!

Pirates of the Caribbean Auctioneer and Redhead Figurines

We wants the Redhead!

One of the most popular rides at any Disney park it’s in is Pirates of the Caribbean, and one of the most memorable scenes is the Bride Auction scene. However, that scene has been changed and the Redhead is now a pirate!

But the funny thing about changing history is that remnants will always remain. Such as the collectible figurines we are featuring today.

The Walt Disney Classic Collection commemorated the original iconic scene in 2006 with this two piece set, featuring the auctioneer and the Redhead herself:
.

.
The auctioneer measures 10″ tall by 5″ wide by 3 1/2″ deep. The Auctioneer features a brass earring, pewter sword, chain, and whip handle. The medallion is pewter and red glass. The whip is made of leather.
..
.
.
.
The Redhead measures 9″ tall by 4″ wide by 4″ deep. Her hair and hat are pewter.
.
.
.
.
.

.
They each have the Tea Cup production mark.

So how do you feel about the Redhead’s change in Pirates of the Caribbean? Yay, nay, or Arghh!

Peter Pan Double Snow Globe

Flying over London

.
Kijiji strikes again and delivers to me another nice collectible. This time it’s in the form of a Snow Globe featuring a famous scene from Peter Pan:
.
.
“You can fly!”
.
Yes, high above the clouds of London, and around Big Ben, Peter and Wendy swoop and soar. You can see Wendy’s house down below.
.
.
1:50 AM when all good girls and boys should be in bed!
.
.
Wendy’s house is offset by the Indian tents of Neverland
.
.
Enesco Group Inc.
.
The music box plays Greensleeves, and not a musical selection from the movie itself. Many Disney musical figurines do this for some reason. I guess with the sheer number of collectibles produced, they figure we’d get pretty bored with The Second Star to the Right.
.
OK everyone: Off to Neverland!

BOOK REVIEW: Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo

.
by Vic Crume
Scholastic Book Services
1977
.
This great little paperback novel only cost me $4 even, and it’s turned out to be worth every penny. Of course, at $4, that isn’t saying much!
.
But seriously, the cover art alone is worth the price, along with the black and white photographs from the movie inside. The story is written in a simplified way for children, but gives some interesting insights into Herbie that didn’t come across in the movie.
.
.
Novel adaption of the third Herbie movie
.
To give you an idea of the style of writing, and how the book helps us to see Herbie in a more intimate way, here is a reprint of the opening lines:
.
What a sight!
.
Swinging safely in a cargo net from the big ship’s unloading crane, Herbie had a bird’s-eye view of the busy docks below. In fact, he could see quite a lot of the port city of Le Havre, France.
.
Herbie is a white Volkswagen bug with a big, bright “53” painted on his hood and sides, and the view wasn’t quite what he’d expected. A small frown crept between his pistons. Not a race track in sight! Odd! Herbie was sure that Jim Douglas, his driver, and Wheely Applegate, his mechanic, had brought him across the Atlantic Ocean especially to race. Then the cargo net started to descend, and Herbie spotted his friends down on the docks. He’d soon find out where he’d be taking them!
.
(break)
.
“There he is!” Wheely sang out when he saw the VW. “Look out Europe! Here comes Herbie!” They broke into a fast trot.
.
They knew their little white bug, Herbie, was someone extra special. Wheely knew every inch of Herbie  – from front to back bumper – and he had never located anything unusual tucked away in the fierce little racer, but he and Jim were sure that Herbie had a mind and a heart of his own hidden somewhere. No wonder they rushed to the unloading dock to meet Car 53.
.
I’m planning on reading the entire novel soon to enjoy more insights into Disney’s most famous car.
.
.
Stills from the movie
.
With all of the merchandise out there, I’m surprised that I have never come across a die cast model of Herbie, or rarely seen any type of Herbie collectible! For such a huge franchise, one would expect more product.
.
Be that as it may, I’m glad I found this book!
.
To conclude this post, I’ll leave you with the closing lines, that give us yet more insight into Herbie… and one of his co-stars:
.
In the shadows, two sets of headlights blinked gently on and off. Herbie and Giselle!
.
As they (Jim and Diane) watched, there was a gentle thump of two doors touching.
.
Softly, the Mediterranean moon beamed silvery light upon two silvery door handles. There was no doubt about it –
.
Herbie and Giselle were holding doors!
.
All together now: Awww!
.

Tomart’s Disneyana – Issue 8

I have all 74 issues of this great magazine, most in one place, but I need to locate others. But here is issue #8:
..
This issues coverage starts out on the inside cover with merchandise from Indiana Jones Adventure in Disneyland.
.
Next it covers Sotheby’s Art of the Lion King auction. One of the things I love about this magazine, is it’s coverage of animation art auctions. I worked for a short time in an animation gallery, doing background paintings for collectors to display their cels over. In exchange, I would get credit towards animation art. I have several original sketches, drawings, and production art pieces, which I will share here eventually.
.
Next, an article about Disneykins. Disneykins are tiny little plastic figures that came packaged individually or in groups.
.
After that, information on Big Little Books.
.
Then, a 1995 Toy Fair Report on Pocahontas. I actually collected Meeko merchandise, and have several of the items pictured here.
.
.
Next up, coverage of the 1995 Disneyana Convention. At that time, I couldn’t afford to attend these events, and that is probably for the best!
.
Then there is info on U.K. Disneyana, Walt Disney Classic Collection, and buttons and pins.
.
They even had a section on Disney Store merchandise. As I was a Cast Member at the time this issue came out, this was incredible. I can now point at this page and say: ” I have that, and that, oh, I didn’t get that, but remember it coming in.”
..
Finally, on the inside back cover, theme park collectibles.
.
Did I mention I love this magazine?
