Found Disney: Walt Disney Visits Studio 1 at NBC

We usually associate Walt Disney with the ABC network due to the fact that they sponsored Disneyland in return for a program called Disneyland (1954-1959). But ABC was not set up to broadcast in color, so although the basic format remained the same, the series moved to NBC on September 24, 1961.

We all know and love Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color (1961–1969).

All of this was brought to my mind while I was watching bonus content on a Johnny Carson DVD. And this is what I saw:

Walt at NBC

Notice a familiar face? I’ll highlight it for you:

Walt at NBC 2

As you walk into the Artists Entrance of NBC Studio 1 you see these renderings of famous personalities that were associated with the network. After Walt Disney (circled), there is Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny, Groucho Marx, Don Rickles, Chico and the Man, and Steve Allen (the first host of The Tonight Show, and the man who was instrumental in innovating the concept of the television talk show), among others.

I just love it when I catch a Disney reference in unexpected places!

Foodie Friday: Best Burgers at Disney

It’s always a Friday when a great burger is there to be had! So today we are sharing where you can find one of the best burgers at Disney.

Splitsville Luxury Lanes

OK, no one ever said: “Hey guys, I just found the best burger in the world at the local bowling alley!” But the thing to remember here is that Splitsville Luxury Lanes isn’t your average run of the mill bowling alley!

They use terms like ‘Not your typical bowling alley menu. Hope you don’t mind.’ and ‘At Splitsville, we have taken great care to develop a unique menu that combines traditional and upscale offerings that extend well beyond your expectation of alley food.’ This, may I assure you, describes their hamburgers!

So without further ado, I submit the monster below for the Best Burger at Disney:

The Mad King

What I had, or should I say, it had me!

With a name like The Mad King, you know it’s going to own you! All the portions are huge with every hamburger coming with a nice portion of fries, and drinks are bottomless. Here are some more offerings if eating something considered ‘mad’ is too much for you:

Burger Menu 1

Burger Menu 2

Prices are premium, but worth it!

They also have a great selection of gluten-free foods, with the gluten-free hamburger served on a bun that you can actually enjoy eating, like my wife Karen is doing below:

Burger Heaven One     Burger Heaven Two

Smile approved!

So the next time you visit Walt Disney World, be sure to visit Disney Springs at lunch or dinner time. You don’t have to pay park admission to get near the place, and no reservations are usually needed.

As they don’t say in France: “Bon Pig Out!”

Disney Cruise Line – Disney Wonder Princess Meet and Greet

The best part of our Disney Cruise was the amazing décor of the ship (Disney Wonder). I spent a lot of time walking around in awe snapping shot after shot!

I got this great moment between Tiana (Princess and the Frog) and a little version of Aurora (Sleeping Beauty):

Tiana with Little Princess

The regal surroundings made this a perfect shot, but it also feels intimate due to the isolation of the subjects.

I don’t know what they were saying, but it looks like they were having a little dance practice. Too cute!

Disney Springs Princess Dress Challenge

One of the most iconic things about the stereotypical Disney Princess is the dress. Each Princess has a signature dress that defines her look and image, usually based on how she looks after her transformation, whatever that may be.

While visiting Downtown Disney (renamed Disney Springs now) I saw three Princesses posing around The World of Disney store. And in one display window, I also saw the dresses of these same three Princesses made out of dolls.

So I thought it would be neat to see side-by-side comparisons. Who will win the Best Dress Challenge? We’ll start with Cinderella:

Cinderella Statue     Cinerella Dress

Now, we know that Cinderella started out with her mother’s dress, altered with the help of her critter friends. But that one got ruined by her jealous step sisters, and I believe it was white with pink embellishments (above right). The final version ended up being blue (above left). But I think both colors look great!

Now on to our next Princess, Aurora, or Sleeping Beauty:

Sleeping Beauty Statue     Sleeping Beauty Dress

There was no question that this Princess is pretty in pink! And you have to admit it is a striking design! But if you notice, the basic design matches Cinderella’s but with more angular lines around the neck and waist.

Now on to our last Princess, Belle, from Beauty and the Beast:

Belle Statue     Belle Dress

By far the most intricate design of these three Princess dresses. And I think the most successful when rendered in dolls!

You can still pose with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty out and around The World of Disney store, and see Belle up in the rafters inside. But I don’t think the doll-dresses are still on display. So enjoy them here! Which is your favorite?

Do You Prefer the Younger or the Older Walt?

We’ve all heard the never-ending argument over which is better: Young Elvis or Fat Elvis. I’m in the Young Elvis camp myself, but it’s a discussion that will never end with a clear winner.

I propose to start the same discussion here, but with Walt Disney substituted for The King of Rock and Roll. Let’s start with an establishing shot:

Child Walt

So when I say ‘younger Walt’ I’m not going back quite this far! However, much has been said about Walt’s childhood with most of it becoming almost apocryphal. We do know that much of what he went through, dealing with a harsh father, working at a very young age, and his years in Marceline, all combined to set Walt Disney on a road of ambition, failure, and ultimately, triumph.

But when was Walt at his best? Was it during his struggling years with Laugh-O-Grams and the Disney Brothers Studios? Or was it later when he was everyone’s Uncle Walt, and the undisputed King of Disneyland?

Let’s look at both periods of his life.

Younger     Walt

Young Walt 1

It’s during his earlier years in the entertainment industry that we see Walt at his most aggressive. With not much experience or resources, he pioneered many new techniques in animation, just because he didn’t know enough to know that it couldn’t be done!

So Walt pushed from the Alice Comedies to a talking Mickey Mouse to the first full-color animated short (Flowers and Trees) and on up to the ground-breaking full-length animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He then built a studio that endures today and an empire that is followed and loved by millions!

Young Walt 2

All of this was in the past for a man who was only in his mid-30’s. The genius of Walt Disney hadn’t peaked yet, and many more successes were in store. But it would be an older Walt that would bring them about.

Older     Walt

Older Walt 1

With so many successes in the past, most men might start to slow down, or ‘rest on their laurels’, as it were. But not an older and more experienced Walt! With many beloved characters in his animation stable and much more imagination yet to be exploited, he branched out into television (The Mickey Mouse Club, Davy Crockett, Zorro, Wonderful World of Color) and then into live-action feature films.

By this time he had become Uncle Walt to an entire generation of children and one of the most awarded creative talents in history. But Walt wanted to have something to play with that would never be finished and that would continue to challenge both himself and his team, and so Disneyland was born.

Older Walt 2

Unfortunately, Walt passed away before Walt Disney World and all of the other worldwide theme parks were built, but Walt is definitely alive and well in each and every one of them! We can only speculate what Epcot would be today if Walt had lived to bring his last child into the world himself!

Now millions of guests visit Disney parks each year and Disney films regularly rake in grosses in the high millions, and even billions, of box office receipts. Walt’s spirit of creativity is front and center decades after his person has left us.

Summation

So when was Walt at his best? This is understandably a hard choice to make. What we know as The Walt Disney Company today would not exist if not for the failures and successes of younger Walt’s earlier companies, and the lessons he learned from them. But The Walt Disney Company of today would also not exist if not for the guidance of the older and wiser Walt.

Most of us remember Walt from the Wonderful World of Color television programs. I first started seeing these in the mid-70’s, long after Walt had passed away. I didn’t know this as I watched my favorite Uncle tell me about the latest world of wonder I was about to visit. So it’s hard for someone of my generation not to pick the older Walt based on this nostalgia alone.

But so much has been published about the younger Walt (thanks to organizations like D23) that we also know a lot about him and his contributions to our favorite entertainment company. We see film clips of an energetic and fun-loving man who personified the spirit of Peter Pan, the boy who would never grow up.

Yes, I say again, this is a hard choice to make. Please weigh in with your opinion in the comments section below, and just maybe, we can come to a definitive conclusion. Yes, and maybe Elvis is still alive and living in a small town near you!

Disney’s California Adventure – Tow Mater Hoods

No matter where I am, I’m always drawn to old things. Old buildings. Decaying properties. Or rusty cars. These things have a history and a back story that we may never know, but it fires the imagination to think of what they may have been when they were new.

Although the following image is from Disney’s California Adventure theme park in California (Carsland specifically) the concept still applies:

Tow Mater Hoods

Could one of these be Mater’s lost hood?

In the movie Cars, by Pixar, Mater has lost his hood long ago. He is now a rusty old tow truck. But in his day, he was a shiny blue tow truck. At the end of the movie, he finds his old rusty hood, only to lose it again.

Junkyards are great for photography, both for the rusty subject matter, and also for the random placement of items, as in the image above. Add the weeds and leaves, and you have a slice of (in this case fabricated) life!

Splash Mountain Decorative Collectible

My favorite attraction in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland is Splash Mountain. It gives one of the longest rides. It has perhaps the most animatronic figures. And… it is one of the most awesome flume rides ever!

So when I can find unique collectibles featuring this ride, I snap them up. The piece I’m featuring today was found in a large flea market in Florida:

Splash Mountain Sculpture 007

Splash Mountain Sculpture 002     Splash Mountain Sculpture 003

Splash Mountain Sculpture 004     Splash Mountain Sculpture 005

This is a great concept as it makes a nice piece even when it is not opened up. But when you open it, the display potential explodes!

Splash Mountain Sculpture 008

Tigger and Winnie the Pooh are riding the flume together and can be removed from the piece. Why these two Disney characters were added to a Splash Mountain collectible is unclear, although they do appear to be having fun!

Splash Mountain Sculpture 009     Splash Mountain Sculpture 010

At least Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear get to wait in ambush, but I think they’ll be surprised when they catch a Tigger and a Pooh Bear instead of Br’er Rabbit!

Splash Mountain Sculpture 011

“Please keep paws and cute noses inside the log at all times.”

It’s pieces like this that make my day as a disneyana collector! If you’d like to see another post about Splash Mountain, you can view my post entitled Br’er Chicken on Splash Mountain. I bet you didn’t know there was a Br’er Chicken, did ya?

Palm Tree over the Weeki Wachee River

I love roadside attractions, and Weeki Wachee Springs is really a great one! It’s old and somewhat tacky but a lot of fun none the less.

You can take a cruise down the Weeki Wachee river to see native Floridian wildlife and maybe a manatee, if you’re lucky. We weren’t. But we did see a lot of natural foliage unique to the Florida wetlands. Like this:

Leaning Tree

While on our cruise, we had to pass right underneath this leaning palm tree. We had to wonder just how much longer it could defy gravity!

I like this shot because of the angle of the subject, which stands in sharp contrast to the rest of the (normal) trees.

For more pictures from this state park, and this cruise, please see my previous post entitled Florida: Weeki Wachee River.

Precious Moments Figurines

I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of the Precious Moments line of characters and figurines. I find I can’t connect with the big-eyed children. But…

Precious Moments 009

Throw in a touch of Disney, and…

Precious Moments started to incorporate the big-eyed children interacting with Disney characters, and as a disneyana collector, I got sucked in!

Precious Moments 001

Precious Moments 2 001

I love the renderings. The sculpts are done very well and the subject matter is well thought out. It’s just too cute that the little girl with Sulley has Sulley slippers!

Precious Moments 2 003

There are even some figures where the children are dressed as their favorite Disney character as well as interacting with a presumably plush friend.

Precious Moments 2 002

Also, I found the figurine above, which features a young Rapunzel with Pascal. With this figurine, the Precious Moments style certainly works!

One of my favorite pieces is the snow globe below:

Precious Moments Buzz 001     Precious Moments Buzz 002

Precious Moments Buzz 003

I love the rocket ship design (based on the claw game from Pizza Planet). The ‘snow’ and the music just makes it even better! These figurines are part of the Disney Showcase Collection.

We have one last piece, but it doesn’t feature the trademark big-eyed children of the Precious Moments stable. Instead, it simply has Mickey and Minnie chillin’ on the coach:

Splash Mountain Sculpture 001

This is how Karen and I watch TV

We have been adding new pieces to our collection by purchasing at Carlton Cards when they have their ‘buy one get another half-off’ sale. Who knows what characters will be added in the future? Karen and I will be in-store to find out!

Greenfield Village – Classic Car Engine

In Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, they have an annual classic car show. The cars featured hark back to a time when everything about the vehicle was a work of art! Case in point:

Classic Car Engine

Four of six beautiful cylinders

Bigger was better and no manufacturer spared the chrome! Today’s cars aren’t much to look at, with most being cookie cutter copies of each other. But back in the early days of motoring, almost everyone drove in style.

And almost ever car on the road yielded a great photo opportunity.
