In the Wild: Mickey Mouse Wood Sculpture

Once again I found an unusual item at an antique store that just didn’t quite make the grade to be added to my personal Disney collection. However, I think it deserves an honorable mention here:

Wooden Mickey Front     Wooden Mickey Back

It didn’t have any official Disney markings so it is likely just an art project? Who can tell! The face is a bit odd and the proportions are all wrong. But… nice try!

Vintage Issues of the ‘Disney Magazine’

While picking through a local flea market, I found some Disney Store merchandise catalogues. The asking price was 50 cents apiece and I was sorting through them to see which ones I wanted. But then, on the shelf directly below them, I spotted some hardcover Disney books. I switched to them. But then, on the shelf directly below them, I found the Mother Load:

Disney Magazines 003

18 Disney Magazines!

Actually, 17 Disney Magazine issues, and one Disneyana Magazine. Let’s have a look at some of the best covers:

Disney Magazines 005     Disney Magazines 006

Disney Magazines 011

Disney Magazines 007     Who remembers Bill Nye the Science Guy?

Everyone loves an Anniversary!     Disney Magazines 009

Disney Magazines 008

Disney Magazines 010

Stepping out in style!

I especially like these magazines because they are a snapshot of the Disney company throughout the years. The earliest magazine in this set is from Fall of 1994 with the latest being from 2004.

The earlier magazines had a full-page pull-out image that was suitable for framing. Fortunately, all of the image pages were still in each magazine. Let’s have a look at some of the best of these:

Disney Magazines 015

Neat to see the castle in the plan stage!

Disney Magazines 012     Slippery fun at the Magic Kingdom

Time for a tasty treat!     Disney Magazines 013

Disney Magazines 014

I hope you enjoyed this brief look at some Disney memories courtesy of these old issues of the Disney Magazine!

Disney Souvenirs You Can Buy for Under $20 – Refillable Mugs

Today I’d like to share a souvenir that you can find at the Disney Parks for under $20.

I’m suggesting the new Rapid Fill Cups:

Rapid Fill Sign

Just under the $20, even after taxes

Or way under the $20 if you only stay for a day or two! I have to admit that I haven’t used the new Rapid Fill mug system yet. On the surface, I’m not a fan! I feel that Disney can afford to give free unlimited refills of cheap beverages like pop, hot chocolate, tea and coffee after charging you for the cup.

Rapid Fill Station

The new dispensing system (above) limits the amounts you can get. But let’s not focus on the negative side of these souvenir cups!

Rapid Fill Colors

So many colors to choose from!

Each year Disney produces a new graphic design for these cups. Usually there are three or four (or more) lid colors to choose from too. This is handy, as you can differentiate your cup from the cups of the other members of your party.

Over the years, you can create quite a collection of cups!

Rapid Fill Cups

How many different designs are in YOUR Disney collection?

The benefit of these cups is that they will remind you of your Disney vacation for years after you arrive home. You can link each design to the year and location of each individual vacation. By taking these mugs along with you to school or work, you can extend your Disney fun!

And how many of these little gems do you have in your cupboards? Be honest!

In the Wild: Mickey Mouse Shoe Bag

I’m always finding lost Disney treasures tucked away in the corners of antique stores and flea markets. But I don’t always have the money or the inclination to add them to my personal Disney collection.

However, there are times when a certain piece strikes my fancy, and I have to at least take a photograph and share it here:

Mickey Shoe Bag

Room for 6 pairs of shoes

The great thing about pieces like this is that you can re-purpose them. This could be used to hold almost anything!

Usually cloth items like this are created by consumers from patterns. But this one actually has a factory tag:

Mickey Shoe Bag Tag

There isn’t much online about this artist. I did find this item for sale on eBay for just over $30.00 US. I can only assume that it would likely date from the 1980’s due to the material and style.

Mickey Shoe Bag Ribbon

The Walt Disney Productions copyright on the ribbon dates it to before 1987. So my theory that it is a ‘child’ of the 80’s is gaining credibility !

So keep your eyes open for you never know where a Disney treasure may be hiding!

Places: Florida Beach and a Snail Flip Flop?

Usually when Karen and I visit Florida, we are there primarily to visit Walt Disney World. But in 2014 we spent over two weeks there and so had more time to visit other vacation destinations of the State.

One was a beach where we saw…

Florida Beach

The pink object is a heel from flip-flop footwear with a snail family living in it. What I loved though was the textures of the organic material around it.

Also, what I love about coming across these odd combinations of items is the exclusivity of it. No one else will ever take this image because the seaweed, sand, and yes, even the snails will change!

Mickey’s 60th Anniversary Gumball Machine

Mickey. An Anniversary. And gumballs. How could this post get any better? Well, what if I add pictures?

Mickey Gumball Machine 001

Or, what if I added gumballs?

Mickey made his big screen debut as Steamboat Willie in 1928 and then did a few other things before reaching his big 60th Anniversary in 1988. Of course, Disney wanted to make a big promotional thing out of this milestone, so they put the mouse in a tux and…

Mickey Gumball Machine 003     Mickey Gumball Machine 004

… rolled out lots of themed merchandise!

I haven’t collected many pieces from this promotion because I don’t like the logo or Mickey in a tux all that much. It felt very 80’s (running shoes with a tux?) and so now looks very dated (pastels much?)

Mickey 60 Logo

Mickey Gumball Machine 005

Made by Superior Toy and copyrighted in 1987

If you look closely you’ll see that something is missing from the above stamping. We have ‘Made In’ but not a country! There is a bump following ‘in’ (which you can’t see in the picture) but no wording. A mystery as to why no point of origin was included.

My father picked this gumball machine up for me and then I needed a place to put it. Some time earlier I had purchased a Disney movie display stand which was missing its center piece from the top canopy. And so:

Mickey Gumball Machine 006

It may not dispense popcorn, but…

Mickey is now pushing 90 and so in just a few shorts years we will have a whole new batch of anniversary merchandise. I wonder what he’ll wear for that one?

EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival Birdhouses

The year is 2010. The place is the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival. The time of day is dusk.

EPCOT Birdhouses

The tenants are nestled in for the night

I like the way dawn and dusk can wash out the background in shots like this. Also the light quality gives everything a softer look.

That being said, Disney could have given some of these birdhouses a coat of colorful paint!

Disney Horses Coming On Duty

For every Disney Cast Member, they must start their day by going onstage for another shift. For human CM’s, this involves a visit to wardrobe and a little trip to their ‘land’ via the underground tunnels (or Utilidors) of Walt Disney World. But how do things go for the non-human CM’s?

Let’s have a look by visiting The Magic Kingdom:

Horse CMs 1 +

“So, are we going, or what?”

Horse CMs 2     Horse CMs 3

I wonder if these Cast Members get horseflies in their stomaches before going onstage? I was thrilled to see this beautiful animal getting ready to pull the trolley out of the Car Barn and onto Main Street USA!

Horse CMs 4

Horse CMs 5

This isn’t meant to be part of the attractions at the Disney Parks, but I wasn’t the only one getting a kick out of watching the process.

Horse CMs 6

Ready to go!

For a look at a place that also has vintage vehicle rides, check out my previous post entitled Disney Main Street Vehicles.
