Foodie Friday: Glico Mickey & Minnie Chocolate Lollipops

It’s been quite awhile since we did a Foodie Friday post on the site. So my sweet tooth complained and now we have this:

The Glico Mickey and Minnie Chocolate Lollipops from China

There is a lot of Chinese writing all over the packaging for this candy. I have no idea what it says. It does appear that there is some attempt to provide codes or ‘secret’ messages, as a silhouette of Minnie and a full figure of Goofy is revealed when you remove the lollipops.

At the bottom of the backside of the packaging we find more characters. Scrooge McDuck, Minnie Mouse (again), Daisy Duck, and Pluto. We also find the name ‘Mickey Mouse’ and the tag ‘Enthusiastic – Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!’ Each character is numbered, with Minnie assigned the number 2 on both the front and back of the packaging. Again, perhaps this has some significance to someone who would buy this and other variations of the product.

Ezaki Glico started his company in 1922 out of a strong desire to “improve the position of the people through food.” Air raids during WWII wiped out his company but he started to rebuild in 1946 by manufacturing biscuits on a contract basis. The Glico name was still marketable!

As people’s lives became richer, the need for desserts increased, and so in the 1970s Glico added sweet stuff to the menu. But as the world became more health conscious, “low calorie,” and “sugar-free” became the order of business from the 1990s onward.

You can learn more about this man and his company, along with the current product lines, by clicking the link below:

These chocolate Disney-themed lollipops had an expiration date of November, 2022. Needless to say, I didn’t eat them after opening them for use in this post.

Although Glico as a company is more interested in health conscious options today, obviously a treat or two still makes it off the production floor. Are these lollipops good? We’ll never know!
