Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Post Cards

Many Disney fans are feeling anxiety as most of the Parks are still closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And although most things will be open again sometime this month, albeit in a reduced fashion, most of us still won’t be able to visit our favorite Lands!

To help, I thought I’d take one-and-all on a trip to the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World by means of ephemera… or Post Cards to the layman. Ready? Let’s start with our approach:

The Magic Kingdom

From the back of the card: “Guests arrive at the Magic Kingdom by old-fashioned steamboats and sleek monorail trains. Inside, they find dozens of exciting attractions in six separate theme lands… Main Street, Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.”

The Back Side of Card

It’s interesting (at least to me) that although most of the images on these cards are reused throughout the years, the backs change. I’ll give three examples of different card backs in this post. But now let’s get an overview of what we are going to enjoy on our Virtual Trip:

Magic Kingdom Many Worlds In One

From the back of the card: “Dominant on Walt Disney World’s skyline are two attractions worlds apart, the beautiful Cinderella Castle and futuristic Space Mountain. The Magic Kingdom includes six different ‘lands’ for you to visit; Main Street, U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.”

Time to check out an alternate mode of arrival:

Monorail to the Magic Kingdom

From the back of the card: “Sleek Monorail trains carry guests over the ‘Highway in the Sky’ on a scenic journey around the Seven Seas Lagoon to the Magic Kingdom, where the spires of Cinderella Castle tower high above lands of yesterday, tomorrow, and fantasy.”

Not wanting to travel by boat or monorail? Then we have one more alternative for you:

The Walt Disney World R. R.

From the back of the card: “Old-fashioned narrow-gauge steam trains depart from Main Street for grand circle trips around the Magic Kingdom.”

And speaking of Main Street U.S.A. :

Bound for the World of Fantasy

From the back of the card: “Turn-of-the-century Main Street, U.S.A. leads guests to beautiful towering Cinderella Castle, gateway to the happiest land of them all, FANTASYLAND.”

And what’s it like to hang out on Main Street?

Main Street Memories

From the back of the card: “Guests along Main Street enjoy the colorful charm and leisurely pace of America at the turn-of-the-century. Nearby is Cinderella Castle, gateway to a world of enchantment.”

You’d think Cinderella Castle was hard to find the way they’re promoting it! Be that as it may, it’s time for another Back Side of Card:

Notice the absence of the words ‘Post Card’ in the address panel

Being as we only have so much time to spend in the Magic Kingdom we had better get going down to that castle we’ve heard so much about:

Trolley Ride Down Main Street, U.S.A.

From the back of the card: “Guests enjoy leisurely tours aboard horse-drawn trolleys in the Magic Kingdom. The avenue recaptures the charm of American life, before the Tin Lizzy replaced Old Dobbin.”

They’re going to replace Old Dobbin?!? Say it isn’t so! Well, no time to mourn his loss as it’s time for a parade. Actually, does anyone know when the 3 o’clock parade starts?

“Tencennial”

So we can place this post card from the year 1981. And as the rest of the cards in this post have similar backs we can assume most of the images come from the same time frame. Now before we stop for our evening meal, let’s enjoy another form of transportation:

Cruising the Rivers of America

From the back of the card: “The majestic Admiral Joe Fowler, an authentic steam-powered sternwheeler, sets sail from Liberty Square on a scenic cruise of the frontier ‘Rivers of America’.”

Now that we have disembarked, and are well fed after that great evening meal, let’s enjoy the nighttime parade:

Main Street Electrical Parade

From the back of the card: “It’s razzle-dazzle excitement. More than a half-million twinkling lights enliven scenes from favorite Disney stories in this sparkling procession of spectacular nighttime enchantment.”

By far one of my favorite parades! All of the post cards I’ve shared have been in the standard size of 3.5″ x 5.5″ but I have this exact post card in the larger 4″ x 6″ size as well. More room to write those ‘Wish You Were Here’ messages! Now it’s time for one last Back Side of Card:

Notice the addition of an address box and a different stamp area

I thought I’d share the back of the final card before the actual card this time because who doesn’t like a nice kiss goodnight?

“Fantasy in the Sky” Fireworks

From the back of the card: “The sky over the Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle explodes with color in a nightly Disney tradition. The castle, towering 18 stories high, forms the gateway to ‘the happiest land of all… Fantasyland.”

Again with the castle! Did you know that the Magic Kingdom has a castle? It’s called Cinderella Castle. It’s in the middle of the fireworks there. Okay, I’ll stop!

I hope this post helps you deal with the dreaded Disney DTs. Don’t worry, we’ll get through this together, and all the more so now that we have revisited the Post Card Version of the Magic Kingdom!

Zappo DC-3 Yellow Airplane Lamp

We usually expect to find just about any information we want on the Internet. But not so for this unusual Art Deco-style aviation-themed lamp.

Vintage Décor by Zappo

The current Zappo company seems to have a different focus now, with no items resembling this lamp for sale today.

I was eyeing this beautiful piece of art for months at a local antique dealer but was finally able to make a deal for it that saw me swapping some stuff I didn’t want for this, something I really wanted!

Ready for take-off!
Subtle Nose / Cockpit Detail
Propeller Detail
Fuselage

Now what would a vintage Art Deco lamp be without a bulb? Well, not a lamp. So here is what this amazing piece of design looks like when it is doing what it was designed to do:

Landing Lights ON !

The Douglas DC-3 was a propeller-driven airliner from the 1930’s which played an important role in aviation throughout the Second World War. As a commercial airliner, it could transport 21 to 32 passengers through the skies at a whopping 207 mph!

FUN FACTS: DC-3’s have flown in the Twilight Zone, carried Magnum P.I. on an adventure to Cambodia, have been owned by Richie Rich and named ‘Billion Dollar One’, and has even been used for a chase scene by James Bond in ‘Quantum of Solace’.

And now, it faces it’s most challenging mission to date: lighting up my life!

Foodie Friday: Eating at The Orange Tree Pub

Who’s up for a food-based post? I hope you’re hungry, because the British like them some big portions! First, let’s look at the venue:

Historic British Pub

This Gastropub is located at 7 Totteridge Village, London, England. It holds a 4.1 Star rating but I would definitely give it that extra star after the meals we enjoyed! Let’s have a look inside:

Vintage Interior
What’s on the menu?

We visited this pub for a traditional English Sunday dinner. Growing up with British parents, this was a big part of my childhood. It was wonderful to revisit this memory from my past with my now aging parents!

So what did we have?

Steak and Kidney Pie

See what I mean about the portion size? Well, you ain’t seen nothing yet:

Locally made Sausage in a Yorkshire Bowl

Three huge locally-made spicy sausages, mashed potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, all swimming in gravy, served in a Yorkshire pudding bowl! I washed it down with a pint of Bitter. And if you’re wondering: Yes. I finished every last bit of it!

Most local pubs in England have been bought out by large conglomerates which makes the pub-going experience rather generic now. But because this Pub was still independently owned, they made all of their menu options from scratch, which meant my wife could eat gluten-free.

The last thing to remember about having a great meal is to eat with family and friends!

Our last meal before flying home

This was a little Italian restaurant just outside London. And yes, I’m drinking another beer. Hey, I was on vacation!

So what’s the final word? YUM!

Throwback Thursday: Who is the Real Beaker?

We couldn’t round up all of the suspects to populate a full Police line-up, but we did manage to get two of the Muppets claiming to be the real Beaker to pose for a picture.

So you be the judge: Who is the real Beaker?

Who can tell?

Things: The Science Behind Pixar Travelling Animation Exhibit

We had a Rootin’ Tootin’ good time at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan back in October of 2017. Pixar had come to town to teach one and all about the science behind how everyone’s favorite animated classics are made.

Hey Howdy Science

This was a limited-engagement event that required a paid admission above and beyond your museum price. But as members, we got in free!

Violators will be shot!

Or at least asked to come back later. So what did we find inside? Take a look:

Not everyone was happy to be there
Life-sized Character Photo-ops
Informative Displays

And of course, what would a Disney/Pixar ‘attraction’ be without the obligatory opportunity to spend some money?

A Gift Shop at the Exit?!?
Sweet Sweet Merch

Yes, I bought the t-shirt above. It’s awesome! And so was the exhibit. It was nice to see that it was marketed to schools so that they could schedule field trips for the students. There was so much to learn and I’m sure it inspired future generations of animators!

Check out this short video of the inside of the exhibit:

Oh, and on the way out, there was a cool photo-op. I think I made a pretty good action figure!

To Silliness and Beyond!

FUN FACTS: If you so desired, you could share your actiony goodness on Social Media by using the hashtag #ScienceOfPixar.

Rhino Traffic Jam at Disney Kilimanjaro Safari

Don’t you just hate it when you’re in a hurry to get across the Savanna and someone decides to block the road? Me too.

Just another day of commuting

But I guess when you’re that big, and travelling with a friend, you can do just about anything you please! Watch out for other commuters too:

Rhinos, Ostrich, and Zebra. Oh my!

Our driver decided to wait it out and we all thought that was a good idea. No honking is usually the better part of valor, and staying alive on the Savana!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Lands in England

‘Our fine four fendered friend’ has been flying around the world since Ian Fleming first wrote about her in his 1964 novel Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car. She was perhaps made most famous by the United Artists movie released in 1968. From that beautiful musical adventure fantasy film, you may recognize this:

Sleek as a thorough bred

My wife and I visited the famous National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, New Forest, Hampshire. Yes, on the estate of Lord Montagu in Great Britain. Well, Chitty isn’t the only one who can fly!

While walking around the museum, I happened to see this:

Remember: NOT a Disney movie!

Unfortunately, the main exhibit with other props from the movie wasn’t to open until after we returned to Canada.

It just wasn’t fair!

So we had to make do with seeing two of the original cars actually used in the film.

‘We love you and (you’re) pretty!’

So why do so many people remember this film as being a Disney movie? Maybe it has to do with the fact that Dick Van Dyke starred in the lead. Or maybe it’s because the songs were written by Disney Legends Richard and Robert Sherman. Who can forget the title song, or Toot Sweets, or Hushabye Mountain? Or perhaps you’d prefer a few bars of Me ‘Ol Bam-Boo. And who could forget the beautiful Truly Scrumptous?

For more on why I think this should have been a Disney movie, check out my earlier post entitled Top 5 Non-Disney Disney Movies.

‘You’ll turn everybody’s head today!’

So ‘near, far, (with this) motor car, oh what a happy time (we spent)!’ But there was so much more goodness, weirdness, and fun to be had at this museum. Such as:

A Miniature Monorail
Mini Outspan Orange Car – 1972

And last but not least, lots of photo-ops:

What happens in Beaulieu, stays in Beaulieu!

So if you’re ever in the British Isles, be sure to pay a visit to the Lord and his museum! And if you do, remember to travel in style, then you’ll be able to sing:

“We’ll glide on our motor trip, with pride in our ownership. The envy of all we survey!”

Places: Portobello Road, Portobello Road

“Street where the riches of ages are stowed. Anything and everything a chap can unload, is sold off the barrow in Portobello road.”

Loved this sign!

Yes, “you’ll find what you want in the Portobello road!”

But we didn’t. My wife and I visited the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in September of 2018 to walk the pavements of this old road, made famous in the song from the Disney Classic Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Sung by Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson, the song Portobello Road always made me want to visit this historic spot and shop for my own ‘artifacts to glorify (my) regal abode’.

And finally I was in England! The problem was we could only visit on a weekday, and the real markets don’t open until the weekend, mainly Saturdays.

Still a busy street filled with interest

There were many permanent shops that were, to say the least, unusual. Others didn’t quite live up to these words from our feature song:

“There’s pure inspiration in every creation. No cheap imitations, not here in me store.”

Well, that may have been true during the 1940’s, the period of the film. But now, it’s cheap creations straight from China!

World Famous tourist trap

If we had been there on a Saturday, the spots pictured below would have been full:

Fancy a spot for a table?

Other shops were just purr-fect:

Guard Cat sleeping on the job

I wonder if she purrs with an accent?

All in all, it was still a thrill to visit an actual place featured in an old Disney movie. And although we didn’t find any ‘tokens and treasures’ or ‘yesterday’s pleasures’ in the stores we visited, we did make memories that’ll last a lifetime!

Looking a right Squire at a sidewalk café

So I was able to cross off another place to visit from my Disney Bucket List. This one may have been ‘dented and tarnished, scarred and unvarnished’, but I loved it just the same!

FUN FACT: Portobello Road was written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Of course!
