Henri Studio Mickey Mouse Garden Statue

I’ve wanted a Disney-themed garden figure for some time now but just couldn’t find the right one for the right price. When we visited the EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival we saw many awesome offerings but just didn’t make the decision to buy.

FaceBook Marketplace to the rescue! The good thing about this selling site is that it’s local; you can pick up the item right away, which means there are no shipping costs.

Hard at Work

For just $40 CAN I have finally added a Disney figure to my garden. And it’s Mickey! How cute is he in his work clothes and straw hat?

Happy to be digging in the garden

This Big Fig / Statuette / Statue/ Lawn Ornament / Garden Gnome (pick one) features Mickey in gardening attire, with a shovel, a watering can, and a bag of seeds.

Ready for Planting

Henri Studio is responsible for this item. Their website is amazing and filled with awesome things for your garden. Here is a brief history of the company: Over seventy years ago, an adventurous, talented and modest young man arrived in America from his native Italy. Eneri Prosperi was born in the picturesque village of Bagni di Lucca in romantic Tuscany, for centuries the regional home of Italy’s artists and sculptors. Eneri transported his Old World craftsmanship to his new home, eventually arriving in Chicago, where he began to pour his first concrete creations in the basement of his bungalow in the early 1960s. This was the inception of Henri Studio, where the Prosperi family grew their skills and their business, eventually making Henri the world’s leading name in cast stone fountains and garden décor.

Homepage

The website also gives some basic care instructions for keeping your Henri Studio outdoor figure in good condition. For example: It is best that is set on a firm, leveled surface, one that is prepared so water does not accumulate under the piece. For smaller pieces, a patio deck, paver stones or an area set with compacted gravel are some other recommended alternatives.

Why not just place your piece directly on the ground? We’re told: Most important is to prevent direct contact with moisture-rich surfaces which will end up being absorbed by the new Henri piece. Natural or stained cast stone pieces will show different colors around wet areas. The source of moisture will carry with it a number of minerals that will affect the finish. With a first frost, trapped moisture will freeze. With little room to expand, it will lead to paint peeling, as well as concrete pitting and/or crumbling.

Bottoms Up

Yes, we all want our bottoms to be fresh and clean. Ahem – awkward! You can see in the picture above that a sticker is missing. This could have been a care sticker, a price sticker, or a sticker identifying a local retailer. You can also see that there are some grass stains, showing that some previous owner may not have followed the installation instructions (I know, my opening image shows Mickey without a base too, but it was only temporary to have an opening image for this post. I’ll do it right later, I promise!)

If you’d like to peruse the latest offerings from the Henri Studio, simply visit their website and click ‘Where to buy’.

Pop! Animation Dudley Do-Right Canadian Convention Exclusive

Dudley Do-Right parodied early 20th-century melodrama and silent film genres in hilarious fashion! Our hero is a dim-witted, but conscientious and cheerful Canadian Mountie who is always trying to catch his nemesis, Snidely Whiplash. And a snide whip of a lash he is if ever a snide whip there was! Wait, what?

His damsel in distress was Nell Fenwick, daughter of Inspector Nathaniel Fenwick, Dudley’s long-suffering camp commander. He often tries to rescue her as he is deeply infatuated with the girl, but he usually succeeds only by dumb luck or because his horse, named “Horse”, is a better Mountie than he. A running gag throughout the series is Nell’s great affection for Horse and her disregard for Dudley. In the standard intro, Dudley is seen mounted backward on his horse. Before you laugh, riding backwards on a horse takes skill! Not that I would know. Ahem.

The collectible featured in this post was sold as an exclusive at the 2018 Fan Expo Canada convention in Toronto, Canada, which ran from August 30th to September 2nd:

Fan Expo Canada is an annual speculative fiction fan convention. It was founded as the Canadian National Comic Book Expo in 1995 by Hobby Star Marketing Inc. Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction/fantasy and film/television and related popular properties, the event has expanded over the years to include a larger range of pop culture and fandom elements.

In recent years, the selling of “exclusive” products to attendees has become common at the convention. The vast majority of the exclusives offered are licensed properties of popular movie, comic book and related characters. Such as… yup: Dudley Do-Right! This Pop! Animation figure was limited to just 3,000 units.

You can see above that the back of the box encourages that we ‘Collect Them All!’ But… there’s only one in this exclusive figure set, so… Mission Accomplished, Inspector!

Now that’s Righteous!

Dudley Do-Right enlisted with the Mounties in 1969 and was voiced by Bill Scott. Other voice actors you may recognize from the series are Hans Conried (Snidely Whiplash) who also voiced Captain Hook in Disney’s Peter Pan and Disney Legend Paul Frees (Inspector Fenwick) who also voiced Professor Ludwig Von Drake.

If you missed the convention and would like one of these figures for yourself, no worries! eBay has you covered with offerings ranging from just 20 USD all the way up to 90 USD, plus shipping. I’d recommend buying the cheaper one. They’re exactly the same. Oh, and it looks like eBay Sellers are presently offering about 1,000 of the 3,000 originally released. “Oh, Nell! No need to hurry!”

By the way, I only paid $20 CAN, no shipping.

Backing Card

I’m probably weird because whenever I show one of these Funko Pop! figures, I always include a shot of the backing card. Most people probably think there is just an image printed on the inside of the back of the box, but there is actually a removable backing card with a cool image on it! Thinking about it, it would be impractical to do a double-sided printing of the box itself, so it’s for ease of printing that we are treated to this little extra.

FUN FACTS: Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald had the idea of a permanent force to patrol the North-West Territories. He first named the force the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) when formed in 1873. The force added “Royal” to its name in 1904. It merged with the Dominion Police, the main police force for all points east of Manitoba, in 1920, and was renamed the “Royal Canadian Mounted Police”. It is a Federal agency.

The RCMP also has an aviation security division, called the Sky Marshals. How cool is that?!?

Book Review: THE LADY IN RED by Jean Beatens

Publisher: One Thousand Trees / M & T Printing Group

Year: 2021

Pages: 78

Type: Softcover

ISBN: 978-1-988215-99-0

The Lady in Red… to my husband is wed.” – from The Lady in Red

And who is this Lady in Red, you well ask? A look at the cover of my mother’s poem anthology will provide the answer: A 1954 Bentley! She wrote a tongue-in-cheek poem for one of their wedding anniversaries. It showed the competition she had with my father’s beloved car. Of course, my mother won!

And they are still happily married to this day. Although, there are days that my mother forgets this. You see, she is now in a rest home, suffering from dementia. My father visits her every day. He reads to her. Helps her eat. And cares for her every need like a life partner should. Yes, to him, there is only one Lady in his life!

The image above was taken at my wedding in 1990.

Something happened that sparked an idea within my sister. My father found an old binder filled with poems that my mother had written over the years. Many he didn’t even know she had done! So he got into the routine of reading a few of her poems to her when he visited and she seemed to enjoy it. He made copies of them for the family. Then the idea came: Why not publish them in a book?

The picture of my Mum on the back cover of her book (above) was taken before she started to lose herself. And we, her.

While reading through the anthology, I came across a poem that Mum had written many years ago. It’s open to interpretation: Is it about the inability to express oneself, or perhaps a plea for understanding for those with mental disabilities? Either way, it certainly seems to fit the situation that my mother now finds herself in. I’ll include it below, but with a changed title, to be more politically correct:

Garden of the Mind

In the garden of my mind

are flowering thoughts so deep,

that the roots entangle, tie and bind,

entrapping them within their keep.

Tis no wonder then, I find it hard indeed,

to seek them out, and release them from this weed.

People stare and think I’m dumb,

but I’m just the same as they:

My thoughts and words, to the weeds succumb,

Making me a victim of their prey.

I try, I really do, you know,

to make the thoughts and words flow together.

But deep within the garden of my mind

the maze of paths makes it difficult to find

the flowering thoughts, held so deep…

held forever within their keep.

According to the Mayo Clinic, dementia describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with your daily life. It isn’t a specific disease, but several different diseases may cause dementia. Another symptom of dementia is difficulty communicating or finding words. It is this struggle that I see in my mother and what made me respond to this particular poem.

Apart from poetry, my mother also painted, did ballroom dancing, and knitted or crocheted. Many of our family have things she created. My wife and I are obviously big Disney fans, so she made us this:

It measures about four foot square and is monogrammed for my wife, Karen, and myself, Lee.

She even went to the extra trouble of finishing the back in a colourful pattern:

Now that took some work! I think it’s obvious that my mother had some great wherewithal and was able to apply it in so many different and creative ways. Which makes seeing her lose a bit more ground each visit so hard to deal with!

It’s a blessing to have The Lady in Red – An Anthology of Poetry as a reminder of the amazing woman who helped to spark in her son a creative spirit that has helped me to weather the storms of life! Although it seems that she has forgotten that I am that son, perhaps it is still one of those thoughts caught in the weeds of the garden of her mind.

I’d like to think so.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This book has been self-published by the family and so is not available commercially at this time. It may be available through Amazon eventually. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, limited amounts are available. Please contact Lee through this site or the Disleelandia FaceBook page. Thank you!

K’NEX Disney Parks Space Mountain Building Set

What have I gotten myself into?!? I’ve known about these building sets for years but never wanted to shell out the money… or the time, to put one together. But FaceBook Marketplace is a temptress and she sucked me in! Now I own a K’NEX Space Mountain model.

It should only take an hour or two to put together… right?

The box is pretty beat up but gives us some nice graphics. And it gives you the idea that it just may be possible to assemble your very own Space Mountain. And if you believe that…

Disney Parks does sell some amazing theme park attraction merchandise! I have several monorail sets with accessories and a Main Street USA building set from SEARS. And you guessed it: None of them are put together!

Seriously, just look at all those parts (top left). And stickers (top right). At least the cars, or ride vehicles (bottom left) look simple, as do the little guest figures (bottom right). Actually, I almost bought this set just to get the LEGO-like figures!

The motor (top) is simple enough. And I love the Space Mountain sign (bottom)!

So all joking aside, just how hard is it going to be to put this set together? Well, as an indicator, the instruction book is basically 12″ square and 74 pages long (below, left)!

At least it starts by giving you some building basics (top, right) to make it look easy. But does the following page from the instructions look easy to you?

Yeesh!

It does look amazing when it is all together (above, left)! So I will likely give it a try as I really do want to see it working. If I manage to pull that off, I can then purchase another K’NEX set featuring the Dumbo attraction. But I have the sneaking suspicion that I won’t!

I’m trying to put the track together now and it’s proving virtually impossible. So rather than make you wait for me to finish, here is a YouTube Video from a man who (somehow) completed the project. Enjoy!

How did he do it?!?

FUN FACTS: K’NEX is a construction toy system founded by Joel Glickman. It was first introduced in America in 1992. The toy’s building system consists of interlocking plastic rods, connectors, blocks, gears, wheels, and other components, which can be pieced together to form a wide variety of models, machines, and architectural structures. K’NEX is designed for older (5- to 12-year-old) builders. Or grown men.

Disney Theme Park Attraction Keepsake Boxes

We bought these cute little keepsake boxes in Walt Disney World many years ago. I can’t remember the price but they weren’t too expensive. We liked the ornate carving on the front and were quite taken with the added detail on the backsides of each.

Let’s have a look at the first one featuring everyone’s favourite flying Pachyderm, Dumbo:

Dumbo the Flying Elephant is an aerial carousel-style attraction located in the Fantasyland area of most Disney parks around the world. It’s based on the 1941 film, Dumbo. The original attraction opened at Disneyland on August 16, 1955. But Walt Disney World has two now!

The back shows the attraction ‘ride vehicles’ in flight with passengers clearly seen in the lowest one. Also above (right) you can see how the top of the keepsake box swivels open to give access to the treasures stored within.

All four sides of the Dumbo box feature carvings of the ‘magic’ feather that Dumbo originally thought he needed to fly. A nice touch!

From a nice touch to a musical touch, we now move on to The Country Bear Jamboree:

Thankfully, there is no blood on this keepsake box! But we are told that ‘Happiness is a Song’ and that Big Al is ‘Remarkable’. We’d have to agree with both sentiments!

The back of the box features renderings of Melvin, Buff, and Max. They are three ‘living’ mounted animal heads that hang above the theater exit doors for the attraction. Melvin is a slow-witted but good-natured moose, Buff is an impatient buffalo, and Max is a stag deer.

The sides of this box don’t really feature something themed to the attraction. It actually looks a bit like a coffin! Maybe this box is for the poor soul who left his blood in great big puddles all over the saddle and the ground. Creepy!

You can completely remove the lids for all of the boxes in this series. Two little magnets help to keep the lid in place so you don’t have to worry about tipping it over and losing any of your treasures.

Now to borrow some exit lines from the Country Bears:

We hope that you’ll be coming back again.
That you’ll drop in and see us now and then.
We’ve done our very best to please
With just the “bear” necessities.
We hope that you’ll be coming back again!

Marvel Shieldz Circle K Free Giveaways

I pulled into my local gas station to fill up this afternoon and found a new promotion on offer. So naturally I took advantage of a freebie! And what was that promotion, you ask? Read on!

Heroes Unite! Circle K is excited to offer customers the opportunity to collect Marvel Shieldz! There are 36 Shieldz to collect featuring famous Marvel characters like Iron Man, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Hulk and Captain America. Which super hero is your favourite? Spend $10 on in-store merchandise or fill up 30L of gas and get a FREE Marvel Shieldz! Be sure to visit your local Circle K regularly to collect the full series. The Shieldz are available while supplies last.

And here is what you are given:

In addition to free Shieldz, Circle K stores have Shieldz available for purchase. Each one is $0.99. There is also a Marvel Shieldz album available for $4.99 that you can use to showcase all that you have collected.

Not only are the Shieldz fun for everyone to collect, you can also create a fun game with them and battle your friends. Here’s how:

• Hold a Shieldz in each hand between thumb and forefinger
• Side the large slots on each Shieldz together
• Hold one Shieldz tight
• Pull the other Shieldz back gently and then release it!
• Who can shoot the Shieldz the farthest?

Will Ms. Marvel or Drax fly the farthest? In the comics, neither of these characters can fly, so I’m not sure it will be much of a contest.

But wait, there’s more fun to be had! You can show everyone how many Shieldz you have collected by tagging Circle K on social media (@circlekwesterncanada or @circlekontario) and using the hashtag #Shieldz. Plus, you can download the Shieldz App so you can track your collection online. The Shieldz App is available on the App Store or you can get it on Google Play.

Even though the signage outside said that these collectibles were available if you pumped over 30L of gasoline, I was told inside that gas purchases didn’t count. Hmm. But then I was told that because I asked so nicely I would be given one anyway. Much to my surprise, the attendant gave me two! I won’t be trying to collect all 36 as these aren’t really my thing. But I figured they’d make an interesting post for Marvel fans!

Disney Time Works Mickey Mouse Mantle Clock

Of course, it will have to be a very, very, very, very, small mantle! This Mantle Clock would probably fit best in Barbie’s Malibu Dream Home. Barbie is technically ‘Disney’ now, right? Well, if not, she can still rock the Mickey décor!

It may be small, but it’s big on cuteness:

Mini Mickey

Pictures are often misleading. The clock looks big in the image above, but it’s actually only two and a half inches tall.

Although it looks like gold, I would surmise this is gold in colour only. The lacquer is wearing off a bit. But still a nice little piece to display.

Felt Bottom

The bottom has a felt pad. The object itself is quite heavy for something so small. So the felt would protect any surface it was placed upon.

Close Up of Back

This piece is part of the Disney Time Works collection. I looked on the Internet to see if I could find other examples of such miniature clocks from the collection, and found this:

Note that the top is pretty much identical to mine but with the addition of the base and pendulum. Great! Now there is something else I have to hunt down to add to my collection!

There were a few other pieces that looked interesting, so if you’re into miniatures, there are quite a few options out there! And there is one unique option right here on the blog: Disney’s Animal Kingdom BIG DIG Clock. But it’s not for sale! And it’s not miniature, just smallish.

Hallmark Mickey Mouse ‘Style With a Smile’ Ornament

Sometimes the smallest things can give you the biggest kick! I just love this 4″ high ornament from Hallmark.

I just wish it was my size! But at any size, this Mickey Mouse ‘Style With a Smile’ ornament would make anyone look good:

This was released in 2007 and designed by Robert Hurlburt.

It may not be the T-shirt itself that I love so much as the funny clothing rack it’s displayed on. I want a life-sized version for my collection of t-shirts!

The bottom of the ornament is stamped with the year and the producer.

The official spiel for this ornament went as follows: “Advertising versions of the iconic American t-shirt debuted in the 1950s, when Disney allowed their characters to be printed on t-shirts to promote their brand.”

The best thing about this type of collectible is that it doesn’t take up much shelf space but becomes a great conversation starter when fellow Disney collectors come for a visit!

For another Mickey-themed ornament from Hallmark, check out the earlier post entitled Born to Ride.

Vintage Mickey Mouse Bicycle Horn

Your bicycle is only as good as the accessories it holds. But that’s just my opinion. However, I think you will agree that every bike should have this accessory:

On your bike, Mate!

Yes, who wouldn’t jump out of your road when they hear the mighty roar, or squeak, of the one-and-only Mickey Mouse! Of course, they would probably jump out of your road anyway once they noticed you were heading right at them! But the horn just adds that extra touch of drama to any near-collision, don’t you think?

No matter which way you go, Mickey will lead and clear the way. And he does it in dapper style as he rocks a red bowtie!

You can see the simple clamp mechanism (upper, right) that makes it easy to affix this bike horn to any set of handlebars.

Cover your ears!

Okay, by now you must be busting to hear the mighty yell of our rubber Mickey Mouse! So get ready and prepare to be… amazed?

Allow extra time for your hapless pedestrian to get out of the way. They’ll probably waste precious seconds laughing that they should be using to avoid you. Happy cycling!
