Found Disney: Miscellaneous Mickey Mouse Merchandise

Try saying that three times fast! I love to browse through antique malls and charity shops looking for the next treasure to add to my growing collection. But there are times when I find things that are just not cool enough to come home with me but too cool to go unappreciated. Then there are those things I’d love to have but my wallet says ‘No!’ Other times I buy.

This post contains all of these types of situations. They feature a certain mouse of note. So let’s see what I saw, pondered, and bought, at some of my favorite local resellers:

Rescue 911

I liked this because it is an example of consumerism. This is when something exists solely for the purpose of making money, and not for any artistic value, or because it makes sense. This is labeled as a Walt Disney World Fire Chief vehicle, but no such vehicle exists at any of the Parks found there. So this is just a generic car some company had a mold for and they slapped some stickers on it to make it ‘Disney’. I came so close to buying it!

Bounce & Pounce

I had a generic monster version of this toy. Mine had horns to hand onto. This version is pure brilliance with Mickey’s ears being the handles. I also love the detailed markings on the ball itself! But price made the decision to leave it hanging from the rafters.

Peek at Choo

This is an example of something with very little monetary value but lots of fun appeal. I got it for a few dollars. They don’t work. In fact, I think you can see farther without them! But you can’t help but smile when you look over and see Mickey spying on you!

Faux Flying Squirrel

Lastly, I found this awesome Flying Ace Mickey somewhere, I remember not where. But again, you can only imagine how much it would cost! Obviously, I didn’t buy it. But of all of the Disney-related items I have seen in my collecting life, this is definitely one that I dream about. This is the King of the Big Figs!

Do you enjoy finding little and big collectibles when you’re travelling around?

Finding Nemo Fun Shapes Stamps

By now, we’ve all found Nemo. But back in 2003 the whole world was still looking! Today Marlin and Nemo, Dory and the rest of the fishy school are all a part of the Disney/Pixar family, and near and dear to our heart!

So naturally, there is a ton of merchandise to help us feel connected to them. And in this post I would like to share some appropriately tiny items:

Not a Complete Set

I picked these up a Charity Shop in a value bag. This is where they shove a dozen or so related items in a zip lock baggy and sell it for a buck or two. I’ve since sold these off at a yard sale, but I wanted to see what the print would look like first.

Ready to Print

There would have been more stamps with other key characters from the movie, but I only got these four. Amazingly, the stamp pad still had some ink in it and it wasn’t all dried out!

Messy but Imprinted

Just think about the many creative places the children of the world found to stamp these images upon! The mind reels.

For a cool Easter Egg from the sequel to Finding Nemo, entitled Finding Dory, check out my post Dory and Hank Swim with Herbie. You won’t believe how the Love Bug came to swim with the fishes!

Disney’s Sing-Along Songs – Disneyland Fun

This playful little VHS tape was released on August 14, 1990 to tie-in with Disneyland’s 35th anniversary. The premise of the series, this is Volume Seven, is that we can all sing along to the on-screen lyrics as we enjoy classic Disney characters in memorable musical scenes captured throughout Disneyland!

Movie Night for Mickey & Minnie

So are we all ready to celebrate a musical day at Disneyland – the Happiest Place on Earth? Then let’s turn over the post to our host Mr. Owl:

Much of the imagery in this production was recycled from older releases. It may be from a theatrical Short or Package Film or just a television special. For instance, Mr. Owl is the main character in the Disney series Adventures in Music that started in the 1950s. The segment he appears in for this video is replayed but with new words dubbed in. So, if you own old Vacation Planning tapes or have seen Disneyland Anniversary Specials, you likely will recognize much of what you will see on this tape.

That said, it’s still fun to see the park as it was in 1990. Many of the rides and attractions featured are no longer in Disneyland and so this tape becomes a trip down Memory Lane!

Main Street USA – Empty!

Each of the thirteen songs shared (in just 29 minutes) are introduced with a Title Card:

Song Title Card Example

Once the Title Card fades, the music starts and the words appear on the screen. You can sing along, obviously, as that’s the whole point! You can see just some of the extinct attractions that get one last hurrah in this production pictured below:

The last image is of Goofy in a cooking pot being carried by King Louie. In case you were wondering.

Fantasmic!

Time flies when you’re singing and the tape soon comes to an end. Mickey does his famous ‘Fireworks Sparkler Fingers’ thing which he would do most notably in the show Fantasmic! just a few years later after this video. But now…

… It’s time to say ‘Goodbye’

Again, this is Volume Seven of the series, but it is the first live-action Sing-Along Songs video and the first to be located at Disneyland.

Back of VHS Cover Sleeve

These are easy to collect as most Charity Shops will have a few copies of the series in stock for just 99 cents each. It may take some time to get the whole collection, but searching is half the fun!

FUN FACTS: The song about Parades actually features several different parades, such as the Disneyland State Fair Parade and the 1989 Disneyland Christmas parade. Also, you can see a few scenes from the Party Gras Parade. So pay attention!

Book Review: The Celebrated Cases of Dick Tracy

Publisher: The Wellfleet Press

Year: 1990

Pages: 291

Type: Hardcover

ISBN: 1-55521-620-X

Little crimes lead to big crimes.” – Dick Tracy

This is an interesting collection of some of the ‘cases’, or strips, of Dick Tracy. But before you get to them, you are treated to a rather lengthy interview with Chester Gould himself. He opens up about his influences, the genesis of the detective in question, and other works he did.

Next is a two-page introduction by another writer of crime and mystery, Ellery Queen.

But as the cover flaps tell us, it all started back on a Sunday, October 4th, 1931…

As you read Tracy’s first appearance, you’ll notice that his signature appearance and toughness is not yet evident. In fact, as we learn soon enough, he wasn’t even associated with the police at this time! That came a bit later, almost as an afterthought. This is common for fictional characters as the creators often take some time fleshing out their ideas and finding a footing.

Dick Tracy stories were serialized over many daily strips, so it took some time to complete a case with him. And as you would see from reading through this book, not all of the stories lasted the same amount of time.

This book is fun to read and makes a good primer for those who are familiar with the character but not so much with the actual material he appeared in.

The book also gives some informative one-page spreads to highlight the Rogues Gallery and Scientific Arsenal that made Tracy so unique among fictional detectives.

Perhaps the most famous item associated with Dick Tracy is his Video Wrist Watch. Not quite an Apple Watch, but definitely a foreshadowing of things to come!

Back Cover

Disney released a live-action adaption of the character in 1990, the same year this book was released. So the publisher was no doubt hoping to capitalize on the interest generated for the character by the movie. But it kind of flopped, so…

I would give this book 4 out of 5 Stars because I feel it achieves what it sets out to do. It gives an introduction to the character, a glimpse into the mind of Gould himself, and just enough stories to whet your appetite. There are more comprehensive collections of Dick Tracy strips that you can purchase if this book gets you hooked!

I purchased my copy at a Yard Sale for just two bucks, but you will have to pay upwards of $30.00 US to obtain a copy on Amazon or other Book Selling sites.

Things: Triangle Island Lighthouse in BC

You would have found this little would-be lifesaver about 50 km (30 miles) off the northern tip of Vancouver Island on Triangle Island. Donald Graham said that “Triangle Island conjures up savage weather, disaster, and death – complete and utter triumph of the elements over mankind.” Well, alright then!

It was 1910 and there was a need for a navigational aid between Cape Beale and Victoria. So a small but powerful lighthouse was planned and built. It had a beam that was powerful enough to be seen for almost 80 km (50 miles). At least that was the idea.

Not all Lighthouses stand tall

Actually, what remains is the cast-iron and glass dome which stands on the grounds of the Sooke Region Museum in British Columbia. The rest of the structure would have been demolished on site.

This lighthouse only lasted for 10 years and was decommissioned and dismantled in 1920. The Triangle Islands were too rough on the structures and the Keepers couldn’t rely on getting supplies due to the extreme weather conditions they were intended to help others survive. Add the fact that most times no one could even see the light from sea due to the topography being too high, thus lifting the lighthouse into the clouds!

History sees this poor little guy as one of the greatest and most costly lighthouse mistakes of all time. And Rodney Dangerfield thinks he gets no respect!

POP! Town Sleeping Beauty Castle & Mickey Mouse

We recently went to the Scarborough Town Center to say goodbye to one of the last Disney Stores in Canada. It was bitter sweet. Unfortunately, they hadn’t lowered the prices yet to make a purchase worthwhile, so we left with nothing to add to our collection.

However, when entering the Mall, we saw a new kiosk labeled Mindzai Toy Shop. I assume the name is a play on ‘The Mind’s Eye’. Be that as it may, they had many vinyl figures and collectible sets featuring a wide variety of IPs. Of course, I gravitated towards the Disney offerings:

Disney Magic in a Box

2020 was to be a great celebration for the Disneyland Resort in California. It would have marked the 65th Anniversary of Walt’s original Park. But you-know-what* happened and so that event never took place. But the merchandise was already designed and manufactured, so it hit shelves by the truckload!

But not Disneyland Park shelves, for what would have been the point of that? With the Park indefinitely closed, the merchandise had to ship to secondary retailers.

In a way, this worked out better for many Disney collectors, as they would be able to get items that they would have missed if they couldn’t get to the Park.

The scale may be a bit off…

That said, items like this Pop! Town vinyl figure set would have been available at secondary retailers anyway, as Funko Pop! are widely distributed, even at your local Walmart.

Fireworks – Backing Card

I believe the present Fireworks Show at Disneyland is called Mickey’s Mix Magic. The backing card for this Funko packaging depicts bursts from fireworks. This is an appropriate backdrop for the vinyl castle as the real Castle is always used in conjunction with all fireworks shows at the Park.

He’s the Leader of the Band

Mickey has played a Conductor of a band or orchestra many times, but perhaps most notably for the original 1955 Mickey Mouse Club television show. Perhaps that is why he is dressed as a Band Leader as the date matches the opening year of Disneyland itself.

SEE all the Sides of Mickey

I paid $39.99 CAN for this set. You can order it directly from the Mindzai website. If you use the link in this post to visit the site, you can click ‘Collections’ and then ‘Funko’ to see all of the Disney figures offered. And other IPs as well.

For more Funko Pop! Town fun, check out my Bob’s Big Boy set by clicking the link. But be careful! It’ll make you hungry for burgers for sure!

* For those of you reading this post in the distance future, you may want to google ‘COVID-19’ to see what happened to the world, and thus Disneyland’s 65th Anniversary, in 2020. You do still have Google, right?

Honorary Driver’s Licenses from Disney

I don’t want to brag, but I can drive anything at a Disney Theme Park! Okay, by ‘drive’ I mean ‘ride’, but I do have a full set of licenses that lets me do so. Okay, you don’t technically have to have a license to ride the vehicles at Disney. Okay, you don’t need them all.

But they give them out and so I have them!

Cars

Starting with the smallest method of conveyance is my license to drive the Autopia cars at Disneyland. There are booths at the attraction that lets you print out a copy with your picture on it. I have one of these as well, but my thumbnail makes me look like an escaped convict, so I won’t be showing that version here!

Buses

At Walt Disney World, sometimes the Drivers will give you an Honorary Bus Driver license. I’m not sure I’d like to drive such a large vehicle in Disney traffic!

FUN FACTS: Do you know what is the most thrilling ride in all of Walt Disney World? At one point on your way to the Magic Kingdom on the buses, you go under the famous Water Bridge just before you reach the Contemporary Resort. One of our Drivers sped up just as we hit the bottom of the dip in the road. He proclaimed that moment to be the biggest thrill available on property! And you know… it came close!

Monorails

My dream is to actually pilot a monorail! I love that Asia has many monorail systems being used for everyday travel. I wish that North America had embraced this method of public transportation as Walt Disney advised!

What is your favorite vehicle to ride at Disney? And don’t say the boats, because I don’t have a license for them!

Sierra Leone Disney-Themed ‘Space Ark Fantasy’ Stamps

Sierra Leone is a country on the southwest coast of West Africa. It has a tropical climate with a diverse environment ranging from savanna to rainforests, which means for me, it would be a better fantasy destination than Space!

It’s time to revisit my Disney-themed stamp collection. This time we are visiting an African Nation, but don’t get comfortable there, for we are actually just using it as a stepping stone… to Space!

And there should be TWO of them!

Sierra Leone is rich in natural resources, especially diamonds, gold, bauxite and aluminum. Perhaps that is how such a small Nation can afford to hire Disney characters to shoot their animals into Space?

Shouldn’t the Snake be INSIDE the capsule?

This Nation struggles with ecological challenges like deforestation, over fishing, and diminishing wild life species. Perhaps this would be another reason to adopt a Space Ark Fantasy!

Sierra Leone, which has a road, air and water infrastructure, including a network of highways and several airports, is thus no stranger to travel. But Space travel? I don’t think they have a Space Port!

This CAN’T end well!

So now that Ludwig Von Drake has made his last kind gesture, on this or any other planet, we can get back down to Earth.

For more information about Sierra Leone, check out this website.

Disney-themed PEZ Dispensers

PEZ was first marketed as a compressed peppermint sweet in Vienna, Austria, in 1927 by Eduard Haas III. The name PEZ is an abbreviation of PfeffErminZ (German for peppermint). I bet you always wanted to know that!

By now, everyone is aware of PEZ, and has probably used at least one in their lifetime. How about you? If so, was it a Disney dispenser?

Monsters Inc.

In 1955, the Pez company placed heads on the dispensers and marketed them for children. Popeye, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck were among the first character dispensers.

Ratatouille

It’s fun to collect PEZ dispensers, especially if you can find a complete set of characters. All of mine are still in the packaging. I wonder how long the candy remains fresh and eatable?

Candied Goodness!

Do you have a favorite flavor? I was trying to think of mine but I seem to remember that they basically taste the same. It’s been awhile since I had a PEZ candy, so I could be wrong.

Miscellaneous

You can attend PEZ conventions around the world and even pay crazy money to own rare variants. Or you can just pick up a cheep one at the Dollar Store and get the same enjoyment out of it!

Can’t get enough sugary goodness to satisfy your sweet tooth? Then check out my Mickey Mouse Clubhouse CANDY FAN. It’s about as much fun as you can have while eating stuff that’s bad for you!

Book Review: The Illustrated Treasury of Disney Songs

Publisher: Hal Leonard Publishing Corp.

Year: 1993

Pages: 254 (288 in 7th Edition)

Type: Hardcover

ISBN: 1-56282-743-X

Disney songs (are) eminently hummable and totally unforgettable.”

Would you like to hear a little ditty?

A book must be good when it’s available in 7 printings (as of 2018)! You can pick up a copy today on most book selling sites. However, the volume I am sharing and reviewing here is a First Edition from 1993. Each edition contains a written history of Disney music up to the time of publishing and a selection of Disney sheet music arranged in chronological order.

The cover art was changed for each edition with this edition having the simplest design. Paperback copies are also available.

Cover Page
Contents Page

There are 71 songs in all. Each has the musical sheets so that you can play along with a piano. Many have lyrics printed out as well. And there are also some wonderful illustrations and stills depicting key moments from the films being represented.

Is Your Favorite Listed?

This edition ends with songs from Aladdin, which was released in 1992. But there are also songs from television and the Parks. Again, each subsequent edition would have additional songs up to the year of release.

Back Cover of Book

Does this book have any value to those who do not play a musical instrument? Yes and No. If you are interested in the songs of Disney, you may enjoy seeing the lyrics of some of your favorites. But beyond that, there isn’t much here.

I would give this book a 4 out of 5 Stars for those who do play music (5 Stars would go to the latest edition for being up to date) but only 2.5 out of 5 Stars for the average Disney fan.
