Golden 63 Piece Rocketeer Puzzle

The Rocketeer is a 1991 film produced by the Walt Disney Company and is based upon the character of the same name created by comic book artist and writer Dave Stevens. Golden (Western Publishing Company) is responsible for this 63 Piece Rocketeer puzzle.

Set in 1938 Los Angeles, California, The Rocketeer tells the story of stunt pilot Cliff Secord who stumbles upon a hidden rocket-powered jet pack that he thereafter uses to fly without the need of an aircraft. His heroic deeds soon attract the attention of Howard Hughes and the FBI, who are hunting for the missing jet pack, as well as the Nazi operatives that stole it from Hughes.

Fortunately, I didn’t encounter anywhere near that much danger and intrigue while putting together this puzzle!

The box art depicts a dynamic image of the Rocketeer himself. It would have been nice to see a bit more of his signature jet pack, but you can’t have everything. But we do have an exciting encounter with a vintage aeroplane, so there’s that!

Actually, it appears to be something much cooler than a mere biplane! Instead, what we have pictured is a 1931 Pitcairn-Cierva Autogiro. Like an airplane, the autogiro is moved by an engine-powered propeller, but like a helicopter, lift is provided by a rotor. The rotor is not powered, and while the aircraft can land vertically, it cannot take off vertically. The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. has a real one in its aviation collection!

The Detroit News organization bought it to gather news from the air but it wasn’t overly successful for that purpose. Kind of like The Rocketeer’s first attempts at staying aloft!

One long side and both short sides of the box lid have the title of the puzzle with the image itself. The other long side adds an image of a puzzle piece along with the bar code.

Now that we have the box opened, let’s begin to put our puzzle together:

Sometimes a puzzle can be cropped differently than the image on the box cover, but in this case, they are identical in framing. However, the box shows a nice double-lined boarder that is missing from the actual puzzle. Also, the puzzle itself has more of a blue background whereas the box cover has a greener hue for the background.

Obviously the blue makes more sense as the Rocketeer is meant to be flying in the wild BLUE yonder as he tries to outmaneuver the plane.

There are many, many, many versions of puzzles featuring the Rocketeer, most of which were produced in the early 90s and likely were released to promote the film.

I have a very nice vintage puzzle featuring Zorro made by Jaymar, and another vintage puzzle featuring Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom made by Whitman. I hope you can take a little more time to piece together these wonderful puzzles I’ve assembled in my collection!

Retail: Disney-themed Helium Balloons

I’ve been keeping my eyes open when I’m out and about lately to see what Disney-themed merchandise I can find. You would think it would be everywhere, but sometimes, you have to look up. That certainly was the case when I saw these quirky Disney-themed helium balloons in my local Walmart:

“To the rafters, and beyond!”

Buzz Lightyear seems to have brought along a few of his fellows Space Cadets from Star Command! Let’s get him on his own for a closer look:

Both sides of the balloon are identical. Each balloon comes with a stick for holding instead of a string. This is also the case with the Winnie the Pooh balloon I found just down the aisle:

“I’m just a little cute helium balloon, floating around the ceiling rafters!”

Pooh seems to be having another ‘episode’ worthy of a Heffalump or Woozle fever dream! Just how much Pooh can Walmart allow in its aisles?!?

Pooh has his name stamped on his rump, er… rumpus room, just in case he forgets who he is. Although, it may be hard for him to achieve the necessary angle to read it!

I hope this Found Disney post lifted your spirits!

Photo Spot: Tenacity in Greenfield Village

In a manmade world, what is a plant to do? Will she give up and see her seed spread no more? Or will she fight back for a place in the sun? One plant showed some tenacity and it’s answer in Greenfield Village at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI.

c.2013

A massive wall of brick and a compacted layer of cobblestone couldn’t stop this little plant from asserting herself!

I sat down on the bench for awhile to keep her company. She didn’t say much, but I definitely got the impression she was there to stay! Would she outlive the manmade materials around her? Time will tell.

History 101: Songs and Stories of Uncle Remus LP Record

For such a controversial movie, Song of the South sure has managed to endear itself in the minds and hearts of many a Disney fan. From the fun animated characters to the catchy and memorable music, the many songs and stories of Uncle Remus lives on in this LP record despite the kerfuffle surrounding the source material. As long as you can find one online or in a Charity Shop, because Disney will never release it again!

So whether you are on Team Splash Mountain or Team Tiana Makeover, I hope you will enjoy this look back at a banjo playing rabbit and his supporting players:

I don’t think anyone has a problem with Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Bear, or Br’er Fox, as these characters inhabited a place outside of the main setting of the film. So that we don’t have to bog down this post in the Brier Patch of Debate, please check out one or both of my previous posts on this subject. First, I have a brief post with links to a site by Floyd Norman, a Disney Legend with an authoritative view on the matter, and second I have a Book Review of Who’s Afraid of the Song of the South by Jim Korkis.

But this post is about a LP record with a book that was released in 1970 which shared three of the stories from Uncle Remus. And what did Uncle Remus said, er… say?

That’s What Uncle Remus SaidChorus

As you will see in the picture below, one of the stories contained on this LP record may trigger some readers, so you are duly warned:

Before we get to the Tar Baby story, the booklet insert starts us off in the world of Uncle Remus’ stories by sharing how Br’er Rabbit came to be out and about to begin with:

Now that Br’er Rabbit is on his way, we get to the second story. Encylopeida.com has this to say about the origins of the Tar Baby story: “Derived from West African folklore, the tar baby story had become a fundamental part of the African American oral tradition by the time Harris heard it while growing up on a Georgia plantation. In numerous forms it would exert a lasting effect on American culture generally.”

You can read the entire article by clicking the link. It does give everyone something to think about. But for better or worse, below you can read the Disney treatment of the troublesome tale:

The third tale is my favorite! Who doesn’t need a ‘Laughing Place’? If only I could remember all of the words to Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah every doo-dah day! Maybe if we listen to a little song, we’ll all feel better some:

Everybody Has a Laughing PlaceJohnny Lee & Nick Stewart

Johnny Lee did the vocals for Br’er Rabbit but was replaced for some of the dialogue and singing by James Baskett. So it’s possible that the Laughing Place song was sung by Baskett as Br’er Rabbit and Stewart as Br’er Bear.

And now let’s have a look at the Disney treatment for this ancient fable:

Br’er Rabbit always outwits his bigger and more powerful adversaries, Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear. If you clicked the Encylopedia.com link above, you read of the many ways to interpret these old stories. Can we leave them in the past and take them in whatever context they were meant then, or do we have a responsibility to reinterpret the narrative under the light of newer sensibilities? We may never see a satisfactory resolution to that conundrum.

Lightening up a bit, I do appreciate these LP record books for the stories and artwork. Often they do give a look into the window of the past, for good or bad, helping us to remember what was and perhaps helping us to see what must come to be.

Want to see more releases of this type? Just enter ‘LP’ in the ‘Search’ box on the Home Page of this site. We have shared many fun records over the years!

Funko Soda KUZCO Collectible Vinyl Figure

“No touchy!” Yup, because it’s mine. This Funko Soda Kuzco collectible vinyl figure was just too cool to pass up. Whether the Emperor is a spoiled brat or a talking llama, he’s nothing if not entertaining!

So now that we have set ‘The Groove’, let us have a little peruse:

Sitting pretty for his photo op, Kuzco seems to have come to terms with being a llama. Do you remember in the movie when he was cycling through other animal forms on his way to hopefully becoming human again? After many attempts, he becomes a llama and happily shouts “Yea, I’m a llama again! No, wait…” I guess it’s all a matter of perspective.

I’m really beginning to love these Funko Soda can figurines. They have a unique look all their own beyond the regular Funko Pop! offerings. You can see my Stan Lee version here.

With every can you get a Pog thingy. Why? Don’t know. Don’t care. Oh, that’s so Kuzco!

So I’ve noticed that with these Pog things, they always seem to have a different run count than the figure on the can. Kuzco is 1/8000 but the Pog says 1/6,700. If anyone can explain this to me, I’d appreciate it! The all-knowing Internet has been unable to give me a conclusive answer.

I have Emperor Kuzco, Pacha, and Kronk Funko Pop figures on a shelf of my main display unit. This version of Kuzco as a llama completes the set! Right next to them is a wonderful Emperor’s New Groove Coffee Mug with swivel action. You should check it out!

Kuzco: “Don’t tell me. We’re about to end the post.”

Dislee: “Yup.”

Kuzco:Fun Facts at the bottom?”

Dislee: “Most likely.”

Kuzco: “Bring it on.”

FUN FACTS: The Sweatbox is a documentary that chronicled the tumultuous collaboration of Sting (yup, the Police front man) and David Hartley with the Disney studios to compose six songs for Kingdom of the Sun (the film’s original working title). That all fell through as Disney ‘went in a different direction’ and the creative team was ‘let go’. And that’s how we got the film we all know and love today! But what might have been if everyone could have worked out a compromise?

Cars 3 – Clutch Aid Racing Tractor Diecast

I remember a time when I thought Pixar could do no wrong. Then I saw the first trailer for CARS and I thought the success streak was over. When I saw the second trailer, which was completely different than the first one in content and theme, I was confused and not hopeful for a good film. But when I saw the actual movie? I LOVED IT! Cars 2… not so much. Cars 3… I thought: Please make these stop. Thankfully, at least some of the merchandise from the second and third installments gave us some interesting and fun characters like this Clutch Aid Racing Tractor:

One of the funniest supporting character(s) in the CARS series was the tractor(s). Whether they were cows or racers, they just look hilarious! I give a ‘tip’ of the hat to whoever thought of adding these auxiliary characters to the scripts.

But no look at a tractor from the CARS franchise would be complete without the obligatory tipping picture:

Ever wondered if Tractor Racing was for you? Maybe you should watch a little of the new show entitled ‘The Fast and the Farmer-ish‘. Yup. That’s what it’s called. And here is what you can expect:

NEWLY relaunched TV channel BBC3 is set to mark its return to television with an all-new tractor racing and challenge series.

Presented by the farmer and farming vlogger Tom Pemberton, The Fast and the Farmer-ish (a play on the film titles in the Fast and Furious blockbuster movie series) will see teams from across the UK undertaking a series of tough tests to become the nation’s best tractor driving team.

Giving an insight into the types of challenges the competitors will face, the producers said:

From tractor racing through a muddy bog to negotiating an obstacle course while singing their favorite karaoke tracks and demolishing sheds in a radical ten-pin tractor bowling game, this is not your average day on the farm!””

Yee Haaa! Yes, it does look fun. Dangerous, but fun.

To see more funny and equally strange variations on the CARS tractor theme, in glorious die cast, check out our previous post entitled Disney’s PLANES Tractor Buck & Friend.

In the Wild: Vintage Bambi Ceramic Mug

At first I thought this vintage Bambi ceramic mug was an ugly planter. But then I realized, no, it’s just a very ugly and impractical drinking stein-thingy.

It just goes to show that you never what you’ll find at an antique mall:

Bambi is more or less on-model, perhaps a little too dark in coloration, but I don’t remember Thumper being… pink?

It just doesn’t get any better from any side that you look at it from!

Now the final curiosity of this piece is found by looking inside. Would you drink a beverage from this mug?

Seriously, how would you clean this thing between drinks? There are so many ledges and hard to reach nooks that it would be impossible to know if you had properly sterilized it for the next sipping of nectar! Ooh ick.

Ugly or not, impractical or not, it is vintage Disney, so it finds a home in the world of Disleelandia.

Hallmark Cubeez PIXAR Box Stackables

To Weirdness and Beyond! These Hallmark Cubeez PIXAR Box Stackables are a strange and wonderful creation to be sure. But weird is my middle name, so it’s all good.

I’m constantly amazed and delighted whenever I visit a Hallmark store. They have some of the best merchandise for Disney characters! Let’s check out Buzz Lightyear and Woody from Pixar’s Toy Story franchise and see how they are getting along:

Well, they look happy enough! These tins are approximately 3″ cubed and have no other purpose than to be empty. Okay, maybe the purpose is to put things in them, but what?!?

I love the level of detail on these characters! Their costumes are faithfully interpreted and they even have Andy’s name written on them.

Bottoms of Tins

They sold for just $7.95 CAN many years ago.

I think they look even weirder when they are opened!

Check out my Muppet Cubeez tins by clicking the link. You can never have too much weirdness!
