Disney Infinity Edition 3.0 Finding Dory Play Set

Disney Infinity Edition 1.0 / 2.0 / 3.0 are no more. We got this gaming platform for only three years before Disney let its greed run it into the ground. By requiring you to buy a new gaming base each year to enable play with new character releases, the Mighty Mouse lost customer faith and support and threw away a truly great Universe. Typical Disney in the modern era!

The only good thing to come out of this debacle was the interactive gaming figures. They are superbly sculpted and make wonderful display pieces. I have far too many, as is my curse with Disney collectibles, but the one being featured today is the Finding Dory Play Set:

I picked this up at a Dollar Store for only $4.00 CAN so I couldn’t really lose. Let’s have a closer look into the Great Big Blue and meet the gal of the moment before we all forget why we’re here:

The level of detail on these figures is astounding! And the style of the sculpt is truly unique.

What were we talking about again?

My wife and I were at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood for the launch of the Disney Infinity gaming system. We had media passes, were able to interview one of the creators of the platform, and even saw John Lasseter live! And there was free food. So the game is gone, but they can’t take my memories of a fun event away from me.

The demise of Disney Infinity made my list of the Top 5 Worst Decisions Made by Disney. Please give it a read and see if you agree with my placing of it in the ranking!

Photo Spot: Palm Trees Against Spaceship Earth

Disney Parks are known for their theming. What I admire is that they often combine the natural with the manufactured in such a way that they become a harmonious presentation.

Like these palm trees against Spaceship Earth in EPCOT at Walt Disney World:

Organic and Artificial

Palm trees are a natural study in shape and texture. Spaceship Earth is a study in shape and shading. Putting the two together may not make sense on paper, so to speak, but in reality they combine quite nicely!

I have many shots of Spaceship Earth in its entirety, but it’s the close up shots that I have that are my favorite and that I find most interesting.

Simply Mad About the Mouse CD Compilation

The 90s were a strange and wonderful time for Pop Music. At one point, everyone was talking about it: Pop Music! Doobie Doobie Doo Wop! Pop Music! And somewhere along the way, in 1991 actually, Disney decided to make it a little stranger with this Simply Mad About the Mouse CD compilation of some of the companies most endearing and enduring musical classics.

And they collaborated with some of the decades biggest musical acts.

Some of these stars have stood the test of time and are still producing music today, while others have faded or passed away. But one thing that they all have in common is that they out grew the horrible clothing and hair styles of the period!

Most of the tracks are quite good. A few are Simply Okay About the Mouse. And a few are true standouts! This is common when a compilation album features such a diverse cross section of the industry. Every listener will have their favorite track, but for me, it is definitely the one that took me to my Laughing Place:

Zip – A – Dee – Doo- Dah: Ric Ocasek

Below you can see an image of the disc itself with the playlist:

By the numbers: 1, 4, 9, 10, and 11 were just okay. 2 and 8 were quite good. And 3, 5, 6, and 7 were definitely standouts! Bobby McFerrin’s unique version of The Siamese Cat Song was beyond amazing and well worth the listen.

Ric Ocasek (March 23, 1944 – September 15, 2019) was the primary co-lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, songwriter, and frontman for the rock band the Cars. He released his first solo album in 1982, which would explain why the track I have included as an audio file with this post is by him alone and not by the Cars. In 2018, Ocasek was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Cars.

It’s hard to believe that this CD was released over 30 years ago! Music styles have continued to change. Musicians and bands have come and gone. But one thing has remained constant: Disney music. It is as timeless today as it has ever been. And it always will be!

Zip – A – Dee – Doo – Dah, what a wonderful thing!

Round Florida Tin Tray Souvenir

Florida is a divisive State. I’m not saying that Floridians try to divide anything or anyone. But rather, you either love Florida or you think it is the epicenter of everything crazy!

Whatever your personal opinion is regarding The Sunshine State, you have to admit that when it comes to roadside attractions and Theme Parks, Florida is second to none! Why, just take a peek at this round Florida tin tray souvenir for the proof:

I’ll let you count how many venues there are. I’m too lazy. But I think the image above makes my point! And what is almost smack dab in the middle of all that wonderful roadside craziness?

Walt Disney World, of course! But one my other favorites is right next door: Weeki Wachee Springs. It would be interesting to see how many of these attractions are still in business. For example, Cypress Gardens did close only to be absorbed and reopened as Legoland Florida. Can you spot any other changes to the Floridian landscape?

Why is Florida known as the ‘Sunshine State’? Well, it’s the southernmost state on the continental United States. Due to its location as the closest U.S. state to the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, Florida is renowned for its exceptionally sunny, but humid, tropical climate. Or, in other words, they get a lot of sun!

FUN FACTS: Florida is also known by other nicknames such as the ‘Alligator State’, the ‘Orange State’, and the ‘Everglade State’. Which one do you think is the most appropriate?

For more Tin Tray fun, check out my Lands of Walt Disney World version, and a variety of versions featuring WDW, Disneyland, and Mickey Mouse.

Funko POP! Young Frank Walker from Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland isn’t just a Land in at a Disney Theme Park anymore! It’s also a 2015 science fiction film directed by Brad Bird. The plot involves a disillusioned genius inventor (played by George Clooney) and a teenage science enthusiast who travel to an intriguing alternate dimension known as “Tomorrowland,” where their actions directly affect their own world.

If you delve further into the plot, it gets very confusing, so let’s be content to look at this Funko POP! Young Frank Walker vinyl figure from Tomorrowland:

The film failed to rocket into Box Office glory and actually lost significant money in its initial release. I enjoyed it for the Disney nostalgia (especially the 1964-65 World’s Fair elements) and it has grown on me more as time has passed. Reviewing the film is recommended if you didn’t enjoy it the first time! Although I will say the film relies heavily on the viewer being a huge Disney nerd.

I bought this Funko because it reminded me of the Rocketeer, what with the brown flight togs and the jet pack. He now sits on my mantle next to several of my Rocketeer figures.

As I’ve said in regards to other Funko figures, some work better than others. This one: Nails it!

So I’m definitely not going to bother collecting any more characters in Funko from this film. One is enough. And when it’s this cool, one is more than enough!

FUN FACTS: Despite owning the trademark to the word “Tomorrowland” in the United States since 1970, Disney released the film in the United Kingdom as Tomorrowland: A World Beyond, and as Project T in several European markets, because a company named ID&T had previously trademarked the word in 2005 for their electronic musical festival. Oops! Someone at Disney Legal is in trouble.

Mickey Mouse on a Bicycle Ceramic Figurine

Bicycles were introduced in the 19th century in Europe. They are primarily a human-powered, pedal-driven vehicle having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other.

A bicycle rider is called a cyclist, or bicyclist. When one participates in cycling, they are said to be getting exercise. But when you see Mickey Mouse on a bicycle, such as this ceramic figurine, then it is called Mousercise!

Is the pedal supposed to hit the ground like that?

At just 4″ tall, young Mickey is likely just out of training wheels!

Apparently Kerri liked Becki so much that she gave her a mouse on a bike. Who can figure out girls? Now if it had been a boy who liked Kerri, he would have given her a real mouse! A bike would have been optional.

Let’s end with an inspirational bike quote: “The bicycle is the most civilized conveyance known to man. Other forms of transport grow daily more nightmarish. Only the bicycle remains pure in heart.” – Whoever

Happy Time Records Davy Crockett & Western Record

I can always spot a Disney tie-in a mile away, and although this Happy Time Records Davy Crockett LP isn’t an official Disney Records release, it does have one real Disney song on it. Albeit sung by session singers and not the original cast from the Davy Crockett television series.

Two songs on this LP record sing the praises of the Frontiersman while the others are just rehashes of standard western favorites, like Buffalo Gals and Home on the Range. Ever heard those?

The singing is well done and the second song about everyone’s favorite Trail Scout is one I hadn’t heard before. It has some insensitive lyrics towards Native Americans but I am including a short cut for the sake of posterity. I’m not including the entire song as it goes off the PC rails fairly quickly:

Davy Crockett Pioneer March – excerpt

One has to wonder just how much of the ‘history’ surrounding this real person is accurate and how much has been embellished with the retelling.

Happy Time Records was a children’s music label owned by Pickwick International. It was launched in the 1960s and was used to release children’s LPs, mainly recycled recordings. Eventually, licensing deals with Disney and other companies resulted in the release of storybook albums and recordings of more contemporary kid-friendly material.

All in all, I don’t think the content of this company’s releases were anything to sing about. If you want a really fun LP to share with the kids, check out Tubby the Tuba, narrated by Annette!

Photo Spot: Peek-a-Boo Monorail Orange

The Contemporary Resort in Walt Disney World isn’t just unique because of its modular construction and design. It also just happens to have a Monorail transportation system linked to it. In fact, they run right through the middle of it!

Everyone photographs the iconic monorail from the side or as it runs past them on the concrete beam, or skyway. But here we see Monorail Orange playing peek-a-boo with guests:

If you go to the side of the Contemporary Resort that faces the Magic Kingdom, you’ll find a balcony. Go out on that balcony, look up, and you will see the view I’m sharing in this post.

If you climb the stairs that are found to the left of the balcony, you can also get perfect shots of the monorail… from above! It pays to explore your locations to get the perfect shot.

Vintage Walt Disney World Postcard w/Country Bears

I usually like to collect vintage postcards that have not been written on, while my sometime contributor, Nick, always liked his to contain a story. So we had to agree to disagree! So it may seem strange that it is I who am presenting a vintage Walt Disney World postcard featuring the Country Bear Jamboree… with writing on it. The horror!

Recently my wife and I visited her parents and stayed in her childhood bedroom. And we found this old postcard that was sent to young Miss Freeman by her Aunt and Uncle:

I already have several copies of this postcard in better condition, but it was the fact that this one had two canceled stamps (with postmark) and a message from said relations that caught my attention.

I love a mystery. So when was this postcard sent? The message is no help so we are left with only the stamps and the postmark to work with to solve it. According to the all-knowing Internet, this stamp was issued in 1966. I found another example that was cancel postmarked 1982. So we have at least a 17-year span where this postcard could have been sent, or later. My wife was born in 1969, so that rules out the 60s and likely the 70s. Or does it?

It appears that the Space Shuttle postmark was used starting in 1981, but I don’t know for how long, or when it was retired. But the plot thickens as I can just about make out a date of (possibly) April 7th, 1979 in the circular postmark below. But how is that possible if the NASA square postmark wasn’t used until 1981??? The last clue is found in the trademark of the card itself, which is ‘Walt Disney Productions’. This trademark was retired in 1987.

So we know that it must have been sent between 1979 and 1987. I’m calling it: Adding my wife’s recollections, she favors the postmark of 1979 as being accurate. So she was 10 when she received this postcard. Mystery… solved! But that NASA thing is still weird.

In any case, her Aunt and Uncle were having fun in Florida getting sunburned and visiting Walt Disney World for just one day. Just one day? This is understandable when you remember that the ‘World’ was just The Magic Kingdom in 1979-1981. It wouldn’t be until 1982 that EPCOT would be built to expand the Resort.

To see how postcards change while staying close to the same (?) please check out A Look Back at some vintage Walt Disney World character postcards.

FUN FACTS: The study and collecting of postcards is termed deltiology (from Greek deltion, small writing tablet, and English -logy, the study of). So now I’m a Deltiologist! Do I get to put letters after my name? Nah! They wouldn’t let a postcard guy have anything to do with letters.

Found Disney: Super Grover Incredible Power Multi

I acknowledge first off that this isn’t actually Disney, but only related. Like a First Cousin. Jim Henson didn’t sell the rights to the Sesame Street characters to Disney along with the Muppets. But being as I don’t have a series entitled ‘Found Sesame’, I had to work with what I had!

In any case, behold the wonderment of this jar of Sesame Street Incredible Power Multi Yummy Vegetarian Gummies in Orange, Raspberry, and Lemon, starring the incomparable Super Grover:

Up! Up! And down the hatch!

Technically, Grover is still a Muppet, so I’m going to hang onto that for final justification for my ‘Found Disney’ faux pas.

For more fun with Super Grover, check out the furry Super Hero in all shapes and sizes!
