Vintage Walt Disney World Brevas Cigar Box

Times they are a changing because times are different as people change. That’s pretty profound if you think about it! Yes, there was a time when Walt Disney’s family Parks had cigarettes and other tobacco products for sale in convenient locations right on Main Street U.S.A.

A case in point is this vintage Walt Disney World Brevas cigar box sans the actual stogies:

I found a picture of The Tobacconist shop on Main Street from a 1974 Souvenir Guide. It apparently closed in the mid 1980s as sensibilities shifted. But you can see it below situated on the West side of the street between the House of Magic (you can just see the beginning of the word ‘House’ below, look to the right) and the Refreshment Corner / Casey’s Corner (which you can see under the flag pole near the middle of the picture, look for the ‘CA’ on the vertical signage). You can clearly see the word ‘Tobacconist’ on an oval sign near the bottom right of the picture:

Circa 1974

Yes, Dad could get three cigars for just $1.80 US and literally walk around the Park smoking them. Now those were different times indeed!

So let’s open up the box and take a look inside:

The box I purchased for $24.00 CAN did not have even one Yard ‘Gar inside. So if you’re a BOTL or a SOTL, and you’re looking for a puff from the ISOM, check out the link below!

For a complete story of a man (the oft credited ‘Mike’) who bought a vintage box with the puros still in it and smoked them… in 2016 no less, some 40 years after they were originally sold, check out this link.

Now if you’re going to host a Herf and smoke some fat sticks, they may as well be made with a high quality imported Cuban seed tobacco.

FUN FACTS: What is a Herf? A herf is a gathering of cigar lovers who meet to smoke together. Herfs are often like backyard barbecues with food and beer and whiskey. Anywhere from a few people to hundreds or more can show up at a herf.

But wait, you say, can I buy good quality cigars at Walt Disney World today? Yes and no. You can’t buy them in the Parks but you can buy them in Disney Springs at the Sosa Family Cigar Shop. But don’t try to walk around the open areas with one lit up. Remember, times they have changed!

The Mickey Mouse Club Saludos Amigos Puzzle

We’re throwing way back to the vintage age of Disney and a simpler time of fun and music in Latin America courtesy of this wonderful Saludos Amigos puzzle by Jaymar.

It’s colourful. It’s dynamic. It looks like a lot of fun! Let’s have a closer look:

Let’s Get the Party Started!

Let’s meet our main cast of characters. First, and most obvious, is Donald Duck. In the original film he stars as a tourist taking in the sights and sounds of Latin America. This came out of Walt Disney’s goodwill tour to build relations between America and its Southern cousin Nations. World War II was raging and the concern was that Germany might gain a foothold a little too close to the Allied border.

Another familiar character appears in a fitting instructional segment called El Gaucho Goofy. We learn everything not to do if you want to be a native gaucho.

Aquarela do Brasil (Portuguese for “Watercolor of Brazil”), the finale of the film, involves a brand-new character, José Carioca. He’s playing some kind of accordion instrument in the puzzle above. We’ll touch on the other two characters in the puzzle a little later.

Walt Disney’s WHAT?

A strange detail in the puzzle is that it has the Mickey Mouse Club logo, which has absolutely nothing to do with the film in question, as the Club didn’t even come into existence for at least 10 years after Saludos Amigos was released. But it does help us to date the puzzle to after 1954. However, Disney slapped the MMC logo on random merchandise for years after the show faded from televisions, so we can’t assume an exact date from this information. The general consensus on the All-knowing Internet is that this series of MMC branded puzzles from Jaymar are from the 1960s.

Also, it just says ‘Walt Disney’s’… but, Walt Disney’s what? This might have been a good place to put the name of the film, no?

Dancin’ Donald

The branding is found at the bottom of the puzzle in the border. Jaymar Specialty Company Inc. is the manufacturer and it was made in the U.S.A. Now there’s a rarity!

Carmen Miranda?!?

Nope. And not even her sister, Aurora Miranda, for she wouldn’t star with Donald until the sequel called The Three Caballeros. So for this puzzle, the young lady is just a local dancer enjoying the attention of only two of the Caballeros: Donald and José Carioca.

And the boy with the flute? It’s been awhile since I watched this film, but I think he shows up in the opening segment entitled Lake Titicaca where Donald visits the famous location in Peru and meets some of the locals, including an obstinate llama, and perhaps, this little boy.

FUN FACTS: Saludos Amigos is Spanish for ‘Greetings, Friends!’

For more fun with José Carioca, check out this wonderful Cookie Jar in his image, or this weird Reversible Cookie Jar featuring both José Carioca and Donald Duck!

Foodie Friday: Darkwing Duck Happy Meal Toy

1992. The city is bleak. Villainy is everywhere. But so is ‘He’ who flaps in the night! He will stop the crime in its tracks… after he goes through the local McDonalds drive-thru for a Happy Meal, complete with the obligatory toy. Hey, even superheroes get the tummy grumbles!

What better way to celebrate another Foodie Friday than with a Darkwing Duck Happy Meal toy:

Heroic, ain’t he?

Just ask him, he’ll tell ya! I loved Darkwing Duck. He was voiced by the wonderful Jim Cummings (who also voices Tigger, amoung others) and had an amazing group of supporting characters. And villains!

Never turn your back on crime!

The series ran from 1992 to 1997. So this little PVC (plastic) figure would have appeared in children’s Happy Meals the very first year he debuted on television. Disney and McDonalds did like to promote the newest and greatest!

LET’S GET DANGEROUS !

He flew in from China and boy are his arms tired!

One must assume that other characters from the series also found their way into the boxes between the chicken nuggets and the apple slices. I wonder if any of the fowl characters felt a bit uncomfortable with that particular food choice?

Book Review: Mickey Mouse & the Best-Neighbor Contest

Publisher: Golden Press

Year: 1978

Pages: 26

Type: Hardcover

ISBN: N/A (Fourth Printing)

Even though the contest is over, he’s still being everybody’s best neighbor!

Little Golden Books have been a staple of every kids library for decades and decades. Every IP has been featured along with stories in the public domain. The artwork is usually simple and the creators are never credited. But the impact they have had on children the world over is incalculable!

Now that’s a trophy!

This story starts with Mickey trying to get his neighbors out of a summer slump by suggesting a Best-Neighbor Contest. The winner would win ‘a silver loving cup’. You can see it being polished by Morty and Ferdie, Mickey’s nephews, below:

Everyone tries to serve the community in a special way and they all do a wonderful job! But Goofy can’t think of anything to do. So he is sad that he has nothing to contribute.

Last Page of the Story

But as it turns out, Goofy didn’t have time to think of his own contribution because he was too busy helping everyone else make a success of theirs! So Mickey declares Goofy the winner. But in typical Goof fashion, he is too busy helping with the victory barbeque to receive the prize.

I would give this book a 4 out of 5 Stars. It offers a nice little story with a good moral but doesn’t really offer much else. The artwork is off-model occasionally even though children wouldn’t care about that. But I do! It would make a pleasing bedtime story.

I purchased this book because of the advertisement spread over the last two pages. It offers The Four Wonderful Worlds of Walt Disney 4-book set, which I have featured on this blog previously. Twice, if you count the Update!

This set was originally released in 1965. We find out how well it was selling by 1977 when we read that ‘over 2 million delighted customers’ have enjoyed the books, and that they are ‘back by popular demand!’ And now you get a free Disney Poster with every 14 Day Free Trial. Now I have to find that poster to make my Wonderful Worlds book set complete!

Back Cover

As I said, just about every IP (Intellectual Property, or simply put, characters) have been featured in A Little Golden Book. It’s fun to see Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny riding the same train with Raggedy Ann and Big Bird!

Minnie Mouse Laying Bricks Figurine

These little porcelain bisque figurines were released in the Disney Theme Parks around the late 1970s to early 1980s. To what purpose I can’t begin to guess!

After all, a Minnie Mouse laying bricks figurine? Why is she laying bricks in a cute little pink dress with white polka dots? And are those blue pumps CSA certified? I think not.

And I don’t wish to criticize, but I don’t think she has quite mastered the technique of the professional brick layer. That wall looks a little wonky. Of course, it matches most cartoon walls, so…

Another figurine in this series featured Mickey as a Baker. Obviously there were many more variations released. This one is just 3″ tall.

We know that this figurine is from before 1987 because of the Walt Disney Productions branding, which was discontinued after that date.

I paid only $8.00 US for Minnie and her trowel.

Hot Wheels Classic Batman TV Series Batcopter

Hot Wheels has a long history of creating memorable die cast cars and vehicles. I still have fond memories of playing with my toy cars, even remembering exact moments of play, even though I am long past my youth now! Such is the power of these toys.

This Hot Wheels Classic Batman TV series Batcopter steps up the nostalgia more than just a notch!

Batcopter or Dragonfly?

Holy Awesome, Batman! When I saw this tucked away in a display cabinet at a local flea market, I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Was it really the Batcopter from the one and only Batman movie of 1966? Yes, yes it was!

POW !

For more Hot Wheels fun, check out the Hot Wheels Official Collectors Site by clicking the link. For the rest of us, it’s time to take to the Bat Skies:

It’s mind boggling to think that there was a real, life-sized, version of this helicopter actually flying around in 1966! More on that a bit later. But obviously Universal Studios should bring this bad boy back and offer rides at all of its Theme Parks. Yes, yes they should.

WAMMO !

I noticed that Mattel also released a die cast model of the Bat Boat and the Bat Cycle. I will not rest until my Bat Cave is complete with all of these vintage vehicles! I already have the Batmobile in die cast, so I’m half way there.

ZAP !

The Batcopter was a functional helicopter provided by the National Helicopter Service. It was based on the Bell 47, which was designed by Bell Helicopter Textron in 1941.

This helicopter has a long history with the Military even being featured on the popular television show M.A.S.H. as an emergency medivac vehicle.

Holy Climax, Batman! The post is over! Does everyone have their Shark Repellent? Good. Because we’re about to head over the ocean!

The Disney Store Winnie the Pooh Earrings

I’m still mourning the loss of The Disney Store. And to add insult to injury, I keep finding reminders of that wonderful place, like this Disney Store Winnie the Pooh earrings set:

Just look at that logo! Oh, and the earrings too. Pooh is arguably famous for his intelligent sayings about honey, bees, and just life in general. Sayings like:

I’m just a little black rain cloud, hovering under the honey tree.”

I hate to contradict such a prolific pundit as Pooh, but he seems to be a very cheery bear hovering under a honey bee. So we may assume that this precarious predicament won’t end as well as Pooh supposes!

Why might Pooh’s plan to get some ‘hunny’ not have worked as well as he wished? Perhaps this final quote from the fluff-brained bruin will answer that question for us:

When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain, and you Think of Things, you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.”

Review: Heroes & Villains – The Art of the Disney Costume

I recently had the privilege of attending a wonderful exhibit at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. If you’d like to visit yourself it runs from June 25th, 2022 to January 1st, 2023. The full name of the 6,000-square-foot traveling exhibit is:

Walt Disney Archives presents Heroes & Villains – The Art of the Disney Costume

Exhibit Entrance Display

Dave Smith started the Walt Disney Archives back on June 22nd of 1970. Just ahead of the opening of Walt Disney World. Every effort has been made since to collect and preserve important artifacts from every facet of the company.

Occasionally we get to see some of those artifacts! This is one such exhibit. My review is full of spoilers, so be forewarned:

The exhibit starts in a smaller room consisting primarily of costumes from various versions of Cinderella. There is a film featuring the Disney Costumers responsible for the live-action wardrobes of our favorite characters. It loops every few minutes. Let’s step inside:

Cinderella – 2015

Once inside the main auditorium, we start to find more characters and many, many villains! Let’s have a look:

You really get a sense of the detail that the Costumers put into each and every dress when you get up close and personal with them. On film, much of this detail gets lost. Giselle’s dress from Enchanted is a good example! Treat yourself to a look by enlarging the picture.

“You will always remember this as the day you almost caught (a photo) of Captain Jack Sparrow.” But you only got a glimpse of his clothes.

There were dozens of costumes featuring characters from Disney live-action films both on the Big Screen and television. Some dated back to the 1960s. I’ve only given you a taste. If you can catch this travelling exhibit when it comes to a city near you, I’d highly recommend it! I couldn’t find any information on the Net as to where it will be going after it leaves The Henry Ford.

There is an interactive feature called The Magic Mirror where you can put yourself into the costumes of your favorite characters. It was malfunctioning when we were there.

A table was set up with a Cast Member to walk children through the use of colour to show or express emotions. It was low key and not promoted strongly, perhaps because of lingering COVID-19 concerns. The gentlemen hosting the offering mostly waited to be approached. But there was little signage to indicate what he was doing, so I felt it was a bit off-putting, and could have been handled better.

Along with the actual costumes you could also find Concept Art, such as with the original and new Mary Poppins versions above.

And do you exit through the obligatory Gift Shop? No. No you do not. At The Henry Ford, you have to walk across the main display floor to a hastily repurposed gift shop. The space is temporarily renamed The Costumer’s Vault for the duration of the exhibit:

We were a little disappointed in this gift shop. It had generic Disney merchandise, much of which you could find on any given day at Walmart, and very little offerings featuring the exhibit or the Walt Disney Archives. The one specific thing they did offer was a hardcover book on the exhibit, which they were out of after less than two weeks of being open. You can order it from The Henry Ford online store, but it is backordered, so you will have to wait. It is supposed to be restocked by the end of July, 2022. Being as we are Members of The Henry Ford, we will just pick one up the next time we visit.

I would give this exhibit 5 out of 5 Stars for any Disney fan. I did notice that non-Disney fans basically cruised through the rooms and left rather quickly. Even some Disney appreciators left before fully taking in the entire exhibit (one woman was overheard to say to her partner: “I’m done.”) It’s like anything really, you’re either into it or you’re not!

Nano Metalfigs 100% Die-Cast Disney Figures

And just is a Nano Metalfig you ask? That was my question when I saw this box set of five Disney characters at a flea market. The asking price was only $5.00 US so I figured I had nothing to lose, so I bought them and decided to figure out what I had bought later.

As far as I can tell, this Nano Metalfigs 100% die-cast Disney figures set is one of three released back in 2017 by Jada Toys of California. There were other sets of course, as you will see if you click the links. These die-cast figures were also sold individually.

I thought this set was a bit eclectic with the selection of characters included. Two from Alice in Wonderland, two from a Disney Channel cartoon series, and one from an animated movie. Connection? Unknown.

The box had a nice sunburst backing card to highlight the figures while still in the packaging. But once freed from their cardboard prison, the characters really come to life!

So we begin with the two figures from Alice in Wonderland:

The Red Queen and the Cheshire Cat are wonderfully presented at their crazy best! Keep in mind that these are indeed 100% die-cast figures, very solid and heavy. Excellent quality!

Scrooge McDuck and Gizmoduck are fresh in from Duckburg. Gizmoduck, or Fenton Crackshell when chilling in his civilian identity, is an iconic and beloved hero in Duckburg. He was enlisted by Scrooge McDuck to serve as chief security guard for the Money Bin. I first ‘met’ the super duck while watching Darkwing Duck on television. I bought this set of figures solely to get the mechanical mallard!

Of course, all of these figures are beyond cool, and so I’m happy to have them all! Three are on my wife’s dresser while the other two are hanging out with my Darkwing Duck Funko Pop! figures.

I will definitely be on the lookout for other figures in this line!

Mickey Mouse Baby Rattle by Danara

This well loved Mickey Mouse baby rattle by Danara is definitely showing its age. The poor thing has been shaked, rattled, and rolled by a very energetic baby!

Shake, Rattle, and Cry

Mickey still has a smile on his face though.

The back of the head could have used a little more detail, like black on Mickey’s ears. But I guess Danara felt that babies weren’t very discerning.

The image just above, right, shows that the handle could swivel. I don’t know what function that would have given a tiny tot, but it is what it is.

Made before 1987 due to the Walt Disney Productions trademark this little shaker is at least 40 years old.

Okay everyone, get out in that kitchen and rattle those… that… rattle!
