POP! Icons Walt Disney with Drawing Figurine

It’s been said that it all started with a mouse. But before the mouse there was a rabbit. Before the rabbit was a little girl named Virginia. And before her there was finally a man who did little animations for a small movie theatre advertising local businesses. That man was Walt Disney.

This POP! Icons Walt Disney with Drawing figurine depicts the creative genius somewhere between the rabbit and the mouse:

There are quite a few images of Walt with drawings of Mickey Mouse. It should be noted that most of these drawings were actually done by Ub Iwerks, the other man who designed and drew the mouse for his first formative years. But the world of publicity needed to see the animation Master in control of his creation, and so we have an altered history.

The Walt Disney Company that we know now is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2023. It’s proper to note that this was not the first animation business that Walt started. Laugh-a-Grams was only around for a few years before it went under. But that didn’t stop Walt! He struggled on with help from one of his Uncles, another man before the mouse that started it all.

This figurine is rendered in glorious black and white. This is appropriate as all of Walt’s first efforts in animation were in black and white as well.

The drawing he is holding is of Mickey in his famous role of Steamboat Willie, the first animated Short to be released starring the mouse, if not the first one to be made.

It will be interesting to see what other figures and sets are released to celebrate this 100 milestone for the Disney Company!

As you can see, this figure depicts Walt in his younger years. But for many of us, our experience with Uncle Walt came in his later years. For me, he was like the grandfather I never had. When I saw the image of Walt on this box, it gave me a pang. It touched my heart!

With that in mind, what period in Walt’s life is pivotal to you? I wrote an essay about this issue that I called Do You Prefer the Younger or the Older Walt? Each ‘man’ excelled in different ways. How is this possible when they are the same ‘man’? Click on over and find out!

Rapunzel ‘Tangled’ Disney Store Plush

Team Tangled or Team Frozen? Although the wintery story did better at the worldwide Box Office, I believe the earlier hairy fable was a much better movie. Prove me wrong, as they say!

But no matter which Princess you prefer, you have to admit that this Rapunzel ‘Tangled’ Disney Store plush is beautiful:

Just waiting for her life to begin!

Rapunzel is a tall girl measuring in at a whopping 20″. Her trademark hair alone is almost 14′ long! But seriously, where’s the frying pan?

The Disney Store was definitely the place to go for Disney plush outside of the Parks themselves. Alas, that is no longer the case with the business transitioning primarily to online sales. The Pop-Up stores within the Target chain are nice, but they don’t have the selection of the original franchise.

The hair on this plush is amazing! It is soft and can be moved around the doll.

For another, more elaborate, Rapunzel doll from the Disney Store, just click the link! Or if you prefer a walk-around Rapunzel from the Disney Cruise Line, check out my post entitled Disney Cruise Line Princesses Use the Stairs. You’ll have to scroll down to the bottom to see our golden-haired heroine.

Music From the Silent Films LP

The cinemas are filled with CGI Blockbusters now. But before there was fake everything, before there was colour film, and even before there was actual recorded sound for public exhibition, there was… a guy with a piano.

The era of the silent film is, sadly, long gone. And with it went an unsung profession. In ever Movie Hall there was a man or woman who sat just off to the side of the screen, in the dark, playing rousing music to put over the action of the heroes and heroines of the heyday. They kept the audience on the edge of their seats!

The background Music From the Silent Films LP, featuring Spats Holloran, will bring this bygone era back to you in full melodic force:

This LP was possibly released in the 1960s when such music, and the experiences of the Movie Halls, was not so long in the past.

It’s fun to see Mr. Holloran depicting what it might have been like back then. Cigarettes and a beer in a smoke-filled theatre? You bet! Second-hand smoke hadn’t been invented yet and Cancer was still just an astrological sign.

Each silent film didn’t have its own soundtrack. The pianist just played slow or fast when the scenes on the screen called for it. But there were certain basic themes that could be played and replayed as similar scenarios were acted out. For instance, see if you don’t recognize this old riff:

The Villain Theme

No doubt you saw in your mind’s eye a man dressed in black with a long mustache. Was he tying a screaming lady onto a railway track? No doubt!

Kent Hi-Fi released this LP through ARC Sound Ltd.

Thanks for joining me for this look into the history of film through the music of the Silent era. Now if you will excuse me, I think I may have contracted a bronchial infection just from imaging myself in the cloudy Movie Hall! I may need to seek medical help.

In the Wild: Dumbo Interlocking Picture Puzzle

Nothing thrills me more than finding a Disney treasure in the wild! Well, maybe a few things. But this character mashup Dumbo interlocking picture puzzle was a least a treat to find:

The Jaymar Specialty Company (Inc.) has created some very nice puzzles over the years. They are usually colourful and simple and easy to display when finished.

What I like about this one is the combination of Dumbo with Huey, Dewey, and Louie. It also has one of the cancelled crows from the original movie.

Miniature Ceramic Disney Circus Dumbo Figurine

I’ve found another piece that is difficult to research. It appears that this is not a Disneykins figurine even though it has many similarities, not the least of which is the size. It also has no markings of any kind, further making it hard to date.

That said, this miniature ceramic Disney circus Dumbo figurine is a wonderful little collectible:

It stands at just over 1″ high. It would have been hand painted. I would speculate that it was made in Japan due to the level of detail in the sculpt and the fine wash finishes.

If I’m right about the place of manufacture it would indicate a pre-80s release.

It’s interesting how many Disney characters have become stuck in time. In Dumbo’s case, he is doomed to be an infant elephant forever! To see more unfortunate inclusions to this club, check out my earlier post entitled Top 5 Disney Characters Stuck in Time. Actually, there’s six in the article, but I won’t tell if you don’t!

Winnie the Pooh Light Switch Cover with Thermometer

If you think that a blustery day might just whisk you and your friends away on balloons, as happens, you may want to check the temperature first!

To do so, you can simply check your patented Winnie the Pooh light switch cover with thermometer, or ‘Digital Temperature Indicator’, if you will:

Oh bother! That will only tell you the temperature inside your room! Best stay inside, then. Now that you have nothing fun to do, why not clean:

This is good advice for Pooh of any kind.

If you’re afraid of the dark and don’t want to flick the light switch to the off position, don’t worry! We have you covered with the Winnie the Pooh Nightlight. Two in fact!

NANCO Posable Kermit the Frog Plush

Disney acquired the Muppets (but not Sesame Street) in 2004. I believe that makes any merchandise that was sold prior to the purchase more valuable. So if you can find a Muppet character with a Henson trademark, you have something special!

A case in point is this Nanco posable Kermit the Frog plush:

“It’s time to play the music!”

Both of Kermit’s arms and legs are fully posable with a steel wire running through each. When his legs are fully extended, he is 16″ tall.

“On Disleelandia today!”

But I’m not putting on any makeup, although I may dress up right!

There is a loop attached to the back of his head so that you can hang Kermit for display purposes. Not because he was a bad frog!

Nanco plush are still available through the Rhode Island Novelty website.

Nanco is no stranger to the Muppets. I also have a large Beaker plush from the same company. The link also highlights a smaller Beaker from Sababa Toys. Both are worth meeting!

This has been the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational, post! Yes, this is what we call Disleelandia!

WDW Magic Kingdom Wintergreen Mints Tin

A big part of any Disney vacation are the souvenirs! Or is it just me? I love checking out all of the new merchandise every time I visit the Parks or Disney Springs. Of course, it can become very expensive if you lack self control… like me.

So I’m always delighted to find inexpensive items like this WDW Magic Kingdom wintergreen mints tin:

The image on the tin lid is fun if not a bit confusing. Only two lands are represented from the Magic Kingdom: Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. But no Frontierland or Adventureland or other sections of the Park.

As for the image, would Mickey really need a map to find his way around the Park? And Goofy had better duck!

After the mints are consumed the tin makes a nice little keepsake box.

Most of the mints you will find in these tins are basically the same. They may list a different flavour but I’ve found them to taste pretty much the same. And forget it if you have an allergy! I also use them to help me to cut down on expensive snacking when I’m in the Parks. They give you something to suck on which helps you to resist the temptation to stop at every food cart!

Obviously I have quite a collection of these little tins, but I also have a much larger tin that was also sold at Walt Disney World. It was filled with taffy, but I purchased it after someone else had consumed the contents!

Miniature Rubber Mickey Mouse Figurine

So who’s a little cutie patootie, then? Well, this miniature rubber Mickey Mouse figurine definitely fits the definition: Someone so cute you want to squish them up and stick them in your pocket.

In this case, the ‘sticking it in your pocket’ thing shouldn’t be a problem:

At just 1″ high and 1 1/2″ long, this just may be one of the smallest figurines in my collection. He is made of soft rubber that has been painted. He has a few wear spots that show he is pure white without the colours added.

Mickey merchandise started featuring him wearing casual clothes in the 1970s onwards, which means this little guy is likely from that vintage. Or possibly the 1980s.

Have you ever heard of the expression that someone has you in the palm of their hand? With Mickey here, that it quite literally the case!

If this figurine wasn’t cute enough for you, check out my full set of adorable Snow White character Squinkies. They’re rubber too!

Walt Disney World Castle Bell with Finger Hole Top

Walt Disney World opened in 1971 as a bigger and arguably better Disneyland. Of course, it only had the Magic Kingdom at that point. But it was patterned after Walt’s original Park with what is not arguably a bigger castle.

This Walt Disney World Castle bell with finger hole top features Cinderella Castle:

This rather generic picture of the Castle is used and reused on many pieces of merchandise from the 1970s and 1980s. I have other items like plates and salt & pepper shakers with the same image.

Cinderella Castle is approximately 100 feet taller than Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle in California (77 feet), reaching a whopping 189 feet tall when measured from the concrete bottom of the water moat. This bell is slightly shorter at 4.5″.

Any Disney product made in Japan is usually from no later than the 1980s. What I don’t like is the dual branding between Disneyland and Walt Disney World for something that is obviously exclusive to WDW.

Like bells? Check out my post on a pewter Walt Disney World bell and spoon set. It shows how the same images are used across multiple products.
