Pixar’s PLANES – Fire and Rescue Dusty Cup Topper

Well, I finally went to see Planes: Fire and Rescue. Man, working for a living really gets in the way of my entertainment! Be that as it may, I just came back from Date Night with the wife, and really enjoyed the movie.

Many have already said that this sequel was better than the original, and I have to agree. The characters are better and funnier and the story had more heart. I also liked the pop culture references, especially the one involving CHiPs, or CHoPs as it appears in this movie. Eric Estrada even had a cameo!

It’s way too far after the release of this movie for me to bother with a movie review, so instead I’ll show you the cup and topper from the kids snack pack that I purchased:

Planes 003

This was the drink. I also got popcorn and a small container of mini smarties.

The box also contained two $10-off coupons for Toys R Us (when you spend $50 or more)

Planes 002

Dusty sports a new red fire and rescue paint job

Sadly, the topper for this cup didn’t feature Dusty in his new red paint job. I guess I’ll just have to go to Toys R Us and buy a die-cast one instead. Oh, drat! Well, a collector’s got to do what a collector’s got to do.

Did you see Planes: Fire and Rescue? Will you be buying it on disc when it comes out? I will, and I highly recommend it!

Disney Kitchen Potholders featuring Mickey and Minnie

I don’t suppose I need to say much about these cute little squares:

Kitchen Facecloth 1 +     Kitchen Facecloth 2 +

Kitchen Facecloth 3 +

Kitchen Facecloth 4 +     Kitchen Facecloth 5 +

Not sure why Minnie’s solo still has Mickey’s name on it?

I picked these up at a discount store, and although not highly collectible… well, as I said: They’re cute!

Mickey Mouse Garland or Streamer

Did I mean to say Judy Garland? Nope.

Special Mickey Garland 1 +

Can you guess what this is?

I love finding unique and/or strange Disney things to add to my collection. These little Mickeys caught my eye and I couldn’t believe what I had when I started to lift them out of the box:

A fun Mickey Garland

Sometimes it’s the little things that make your day. I hope seeing this has made yours!

Disney’s Double-O-Duck aka Darkwing Duck

It’s the pin that sticks in the night! It’s the rarity that makes medium wish it was well done! It’s:

Pin Double O Duck +

Look like anyduck you know?

When you’re in trouble, ya… Call DW! Darkwing Duck that is. But the original pitch for the show was very different from the one we know and love. It was originally going to be a James Bond spoof called Double-O Duck, with Drake Mallard as a globe-trotting spy working for SHUSH. Eventually the concept was combined with ideas from a superhero-based DuckTales episode and became Darkwing Duck.

Disney’s merchandising division never got the full memo about the change, so some of the merchandise produced before the show aired leaked out. I picked up the above pin on eBay.

You just know I’m going to say it, don’t you? LETS… GET… DANGEROUS!

Giant Mickey Mouse Plush at The Contemporary Resort

Sometimes you just have to be brave enough to ask to make a magical moment happen. Or in my case, get your wife to ask. This picture was taken by a Cast Member for us in The Game Station Arcade at the Contemporary Resort in Walt Disney World.

The Game Station Arcade is located on the 4th Floor next to the Fantasia Shop. It runs on an Arcade Cards system and you must purchase points to play.

Giant Mickey

Is that Elvis Mickey in the background?

OK, it’s probably hard to focus on anything in the background with such a giant Mickey Mouse plush in the foreground! This arcade gives out prizes when you win games. I have no idea what you would have to do to win this plush, but I’m thinking you’d have to be an equivalent to a Pinball Wizard! At least.

We didn’t win any games but just asked if we could have our picture taken with Mondo Mickey. Well, Karen asked.

Have you ever done anything like this?

Pixar Attractions – “To Saturation… and Beyond!”

Do you remember what the very first Pixar-themed ride or attraction was to open in a Disney Park? It’s surprising to think of how many Pixar characters have appeared in some way in the Parks.

Vacation 10 +

Here is a list of the Pixar-themed rides and attractions so far:

  • It’s Tough to be a Bug (WDW – 1998) (DCA – 01)
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (WDW – 1998) (TDL – 04) (DL / HKDL – 05) (DLP – 06)
  • Turtle Talk with Crush (WDW – 2004) (DCA – 05) (TDS – 09)
  • Monsters Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue (DL – 2006)
  • The Seas with Nemo and Friends (WDW – 2006)
  • Finding Nemo – The Musical (WDW – 2007)
  • The Laugh Floor Comedy Club (WDW – 2007)
  • Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage (DL – 2007)
  • Toy Story Midway Mania (WDW – 2008)
  • Cars Land (DCA – 2012)
  • Ratatouille (DLP – 2014)

This doesn’t account for the Meet-and-Greets and temporary Shows that have come and gone over the years. Nor for the ones I’ve missed! But from my research, the winner, and the first Pixar Film to have it’s own themed attraction, was A Bug’s Life. Other Pixar films featured in attractions are Toy Story (2), Finding Nemo (4), Monsters Inc. (2), and Cars (?).

CA 128 +

So what Pixar films are waiting to be turned into a ride or attraction? Here are the remaining candidates:

  • The Incredibles
  • Wall-E
  • UP

I think it’s obvious that the last two wouldn’t yield a particularly interesting attraction. Possibly Dark Rides at best. And while UP characters have been seen at Meet-and-Greets and in Parades, poor Wall-E just hasn’t found his place in the Parks yet!

But how about The Incredibles?

I vote for a Dueling Roller coaster! A dueling coaster features two (or more) roller coasters, usually with a similar layout, built close to each other. Such a coaster would be designed to produce near-misses between the coaster trains. I recommend one themed in red for the Incredibles, and the other in black for Syndrome.

132

Even Pinocchio thinks this is an incredible idea!

A great example of this type of coaster is in Islands of Adventure, Orlando, FL. The Dragon Challenge coasters reach a top speed of 55 MPH and pass within 12 inches of each other at some points. Oh yeah! That’s just, well… Incredible!

Disney is the undisputed leader in themed roller coasters, but Parks like Universal tend to win when it comes to coasters offering sheer thrills! An Incredibles dueling roller coaster could change that forever. And it should be in Disney’s Hollywood Studios to help bolster that Park, and to best fit in with the increasing Pixar presence already there.

Well, that’s just my vote for what the next Pixar-themed attraction at Disney Theme Parks should be. What’s yours?

Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

When we visited Disneyland early last year, we just had to make a side trip to Hollywood. But we still managed to fit in some Disney as we walked the streets of this historic film mecca.

Hollywood 6

And on those streets (at least one of them) we found these:

Hollywood 16

Award of Excellence

Special Achievement for

50 Years of Magical Entertainment

July 14, 2005

It was extra special to find this star as we were enjoying, not only our first visit to California, but also our first visit to Walt’s first theme park, Disneyland.

Hollywood 12  Hollywood 13

Two people who did so much for Disney film!

As I was taking these pictures of my favorite stars/stars, some of the locals walked by and laughed at me. I guess they see these every day and so they have become meaningless to them. Or maybe I looked like the typical tourist. Either way, I didn’t care! It gave me joy to remember the contributions of many people, Disney Nouns all, who created some of my favorite cinematic moments.

And this twinkling star caught my eye too:

Hollywood 9

Tinker Bell helps to celebrate 50 Years of the Hollywood Walk of Fame

1960 – 2010

So if you ever get a chance to visit Hollywood, and you walk the famous streets, don’t forget to look down. You just never know who you’ll meet!

Winnie the Pooh Styling with Clothing and Accessories

It’s a pity that children get to wear all of the really cool Disney fashions! I mean, really, if I were to put this on…

Clothing Pooh hat +

… and walk around among other adults (and I use that term loosely in describing myself) what would happen? Strange looks, perhaps a snigger or two. Now I ask you, is that fair?

And if I wanted to carry some stuff with me, why can’t I wear this:

Clothing Pooh Backpack Plush +

OK, it wouldn’t fit me, but…

I think I’d look even cuter than usual!

Winnie the Pooh hats and backpacks. Not just for kids anymore! Who’s with me?

Resort Review: Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground

In 2008, my wife and I with her parents occupied a lot in Section 2000 of Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground (FWR). Right up front I will admit that I’m not a big fan of camping. But in the spirit of trying something new at Walt Disney World, I agreed to sleep in a small two-man tent for 10 days. This is my story.

2+

 Not much privacy

I do like the country, having grown up in small towns. I like trees not skyscrapers. FWR has trees in abundance, so I settled into the atmosphere quite easily. But once we had set up a trailer for the in-laws and a tent for the wife and myself, my analytical nature kicked in! What follows are my impressions of FWR grouped into three categories:

LOCATION: FWR is located closest to The Magic Kingdom up near the top of the WDW property. This makes for a long Bus ride when you visit the other three Parks and Downtown Disney. To add to the inconvenience, many campsites in FWR are far from the two main Bus Depots that take you off-site. So in effect, you get a long Bus ride before you get another long Bus ride.

 13+  8+

But being somewhat isolated from the rest of the World wasn’t always a bad thing. The wife and her folks took longer to get up and around in the mornings, which gave me time to explore. And by explore, I mean take a leisurely Bus ride to Pioneer Hall for a coffee and heated cinnamon roll. Health fans could walk, run, or bicycle. The pace is much slower here than at most other Resorts, so if your vacation was meant to be relaxing, FWR should be for you!

Accommodations: We rented a small campsite with water and electricity. If you enjoy camping in groups, there is also a large area set aside just for that option. Larger sites are available for RV’s. And if you like to rough it in style and comfort, you can also rent a Cabin with all the amenities of home.

3 +

I found the sites to be a bit too barren for my taste. When I think of camping, I imagine being in the bush surrounded by nature, not by 100 other campers. For whatever reason, most of the areas in FWR were sparse of foliage and privacy, which was a big drawback. In fairness, we were there in February, but this alone wouldn’t account for the level of deforestation I saw. Our visit was years ago, so things may have grown in again by now.

Features: For those who travel with children, FWR should be ideal! Although you can’t swim at the beach, there are two pools (although not on par with any other Resort and without theming). Bike Rentals, Boating, a Campfire Program, Carriage Rides, Fishing Excursions, Wagon and Trail Rides, and Movie Night should keep anyone entertained.

And the Electrical Water Pageant floats right off shore every night. The Hoop De Do Musical Review dinner show is also a good time if you are willing to spend the extra money. Speaking of food, don’t miss the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at the Trail’s End Restaurant (pictured below)! During the Christmas season, you can tour the RV section of the Resort. These enthusiastic people decorate their Sites with inflatable characters and enough lights to be seen from Space! I believe Disney even schedules Golf Cart tours of the area.

14+

Conclusion: The laid back feel of FWR is refreshing after having stayed in some of Disney’s other Resorts, where crowding and noise are all too present. And it has such nice little touches: The Lawnmower Tree; live Armadillos and Geckos everywhere; and pimped-out Golf Carts, to name but a few.

12+  20 +

I would definitely stay at Disney’s Fort Wilderness and Campground again

Mickey Mouse Club Push’em Car

Push em Car

But just what is a PUSH’EM CAR?

I saw this in a small town antique shop years ago. It’s approximately 16″ x 24″ and the artwork is painted onto a masonite-type board. It has eight holes drilled around the edges and displays the Walt Disney Productions trademark, which dates it before 1987.

I didn’t know if it was an advertising board that would have been displayed in a store to sell some kind of pedal car, or if a Push’em Car was something that appeared on the original Mickey Mouse Club television show. The price was a little high, but I was able to get it down a little, but I still feel I paid too much. But it looked cool, so I took a chance.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose when you take a chance on something like this, and this time… I lost!

After researching on the Internet, I found that a Push’em Car was a mobile toy chest. It had two of these boards, one on each long side, and two other boards half the length on the ends, creating a rectangle-shaped box on wheels. The boards were screwed onto metal framing. It stood 22″ high at the top of the handles:

Push em Car full

This was offered for auction with a starting bid of $25.00 in 2008

Push em Car 2

Final sale price not known, but estimated value is between $50 – $125.00

So as I only have one of the boards, it is pretty much valueless except for curiosity sake.

Why should I have known better? First, if it were an advertisement for a toy or pedal car, the product would have been pictured on the board. Second, no sign board would be affixed to a wall in a store with eight screws, thus damaging the wall for what would probably be a temporary promotion. I’m a more seasoned collector now, and I can truthfully say that making mistakes like this one has made me a more successful buyer!

That said… I love this board! I have it hanging in my solarium where I can look at it every morning while I drink my coffee. So not a complete fail, I guess.

UPDATE – April, 2021: I recently found an actual, complete, Push’em Car at a local flea market. Unfortunately, it was already sold! But I have also learned that there were other Disney variations of this product. Please check out these images found online:

I think my favorite is still the Mickey Mouse Club version, but the Winnie the Pooh is definitely a close second!
