BOOK REVIEW: Disney-Pixar Comics Treasury

I was going to be away from home for a while and wanted something to take with me to read. So I went to my local Chapters and found this book in the discount section:

Comics Treasury 001     Comics Treasury 017

HarperCollins Publishers Inc. 2014

It contains 14 adaptions of the Pixar films with 1 extra bonus story involving Wall-E. I’ve read about half so far and have found a pattern developing, even though different writers are responsible for some of the titles.

Comics Treasury 002     Comics Treasury 003     Comics Treasury 004

Being as I know the stories inside-out, I can follow the edited versions presented in the book reasonably well. But for first-time readers, many panels would not make sense, as crucial details are left out. It is obvious that these adaptions were not penned by seasoned comic book writers, individuals with a consummate knowledge of conveying a bigger story into the sometimes limiting space of comic book boxes.

Comics Treasury 005     Comics Treasury 006     Comics Treasury 007

Now is as good a time as any to mention the bonus story entitled Wall-E: Recharge. As you would expect, there is no dialogue to help you understand what is happening, and because of the aforementioned inexperience of the writers with this medium the story is all-but incomprehensible!

Comics Treasury 010

Comics Treasury 008     Comics Treasury 009     Comics Treasury 011

The best part of this treasury is the artwork! Every artist brought a great sense of the original story to each title with some truly breath-taking visuals. As a comic book fan from way back, this was a treat to read based only on the pictures (yup, I’m a picture guy).

Comics Treasury 012     Comics Treasury 013     Comics Treasury 014

Not to be too tough on this treasury, it’s still a fun read with good work done by all of the creative talent involved. I would definitely recommend it to any Disney parent who would like a nice book of bedtime stories to share with their little Disney fans-to-be!

Golden Horseshoe Revue Mirror Bit – Origins

The Golden Horseshoe Revue was the first show at Slue Foot Sue’s Golden Horseshoe Saloon at Disneyland. It was a 45 minute show which ran over 50,000 times and so is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-running musical of all time.

Betty Taylor and Wally Boag are two of the most famous players from the show. But it is Ms. Taylor I am going to focus on with this little piece of origin trivia:

Betty Taylor with Mirror

What will she do with that mirror?

The writers of the Golden Horseshoe Revue tried very hard to make the show a good representation of what this kind of entertainment would have looked like back in the day. And they succeeded! Especially with the little gimmick above.

At some point in the show, Ms. Taylor would bring out a hand-held mirror and use it to reflect the footlights into the face of a man in the audience. You can see her play this way with the men in the audience in the Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color TV special (1962) that featured the 10,000th performance of the show. The always gracious Ms. Taylor would feature mostly bald men, to their delight!

Now to the origin part of this post. In 1937, Laurel and Hardy released a movie entitled Way Out West, which opened with an authentic dance hall performance by a lady (Lola) bearing a pretty fair resemblance to Ms. Taylor:

Dance Hall Girls 009

The mirror is smaller, but the bit is the same

Dance Hall Girls 008

A bald man is put in the spotlight!

The fact that Laurel and Hardy included this bit in this scene shows that it must have been an authentic piece of dance hall schtick. Of course, in the movie we see a jealous dance hall floozie upset that her mark is being distracted by her onstage rival. This authentic piece of dance hall behavior was not replicated in the Golden Horseshoe Revue!

I love that the Disney creative teams always do their research to make sure that even the little details are correct to the period and the times being depicted!

Rocky Jones – The Original Space Ranger

Long before Buzz Lightyear found himself on the surface of a strange planet, which turned out to be a bed, Space Rangers were blasting through space to keep the galaxy safe! Just who were these space-ranging pioneers?

These original cadets weren’t members of Star Command, and they had never heard of the evil Emporer Zurg. But they were waging a battle against space-bound evildoers, and doing it all in amazing

Astroscope!

May I introduce to you:

Rocky Jones SR 001

R o c k y    J o n e s :   S p a c e    R a n g e r

Don’t worry, he only wore that helmet when his space ship, the Orbit Jet, ran out of air. But what made this man a true Space Ranger? Let’s look at him by the numbers:

Rocky Jones SR 002

  1. Cool Name: You just know a man with a name like Rocky must be tough!
  2. Agency: For Rocky, he is proud to report to the Office of Space Affairs.
  3. Personal Space Ship: The Orbit Jet may have seemed like every other ship, but it wasn’t! It was the only one with a name.
  4. Sidekicks: Winky. Yup. That was the name of his co-pilot. Oh, he also had a girl (a full-grown woman to you and me, named Vena Ray) onboard whom he didn’t want onboard and that he often told to go knit and get out of the way.
  5. Missions: Rocky and Winky (yup, really Winky) cruised the galaxy to bring law and justice to outer space. A big job, but someone had to do it!

Rocky Jones SR 005     Rocky Jones SR 006

Rocky Jones, Space Ranger was an American science fiction television serial originally broadcast in syndication from February to November 1954. The show lasted for only two seasons and, though syndicated sporadically, dropped into obscurity. The show was based on the exploits of clean-cut, square-jawed Rocky Jones, the best known of the Space Rangers. These were Earth-based space policemen who patrolled the United Worlds of the Solar System in the not-too-distant future. Thirty-nine 30-minute episodes were filmed and shown over the period starting in February, 1954 into January, 1955.

Richard Crane played the lead character and so beats out Tim Allen as the world’s first Space Ranger! Thought you were the first Mr. Allen? “I don’t think so, Tim!”

Oh yes, we need to add a sixth point to prove that Rocky Jones is indeed a Space Ranger extraordinaire. But let’s also review the first five again:

  1. Name.
  2. Agency.
  3. Space Ship.
  4. Sidekicks.
  5. Missions. And last but not least:
  6. Catch Phrase!

Buzz Lightyear made going ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ a popular, if not impossible, destination. But only Rocky Jones can take us:

Rocky Jones SR 003

But remember, if you want to go along, you can’t be a girl. This was the 1950’s after all! The danger could only be handled by men with names like Rocky and Winky.

It actually makes sense if you think about it. No it doesn’t.

What Every First Timer Must-Do on a Disney Vacation

Today we are sharing a must-do for your first Disney vacation:

Magic 88 +

Frontierland Station, as seen from the Splash Mountain queue

Get your bearings. That’s my advice to anyone who is visiting a Disney park for the first time. There is so much to do and so many things to see, it is easy to get overwhelmed! And you could fall into the trap of running from one attraction to the other trying to beat long lineups or focusing on obtaining that coveted Fast-Pass. If you do this, you will be missing out on much of the charm that can only be found by slowing down and enjoying the details!

How can you find these details? Ride one of the trains (pictured above, at WDW) for a leisurely trip around the Magic Kingdom. From the train, you will be able to see all of the key offerings of the park, like this one:

Magic 6 +

A view of Big Thunder Mountain you can’t get while riding the attraction!

And the beautiful stations and cars are just too much to be missed:

Magic 1 +     Magic 4 +

Another form of transportation that will take you around the property for an overview is the Monorail. This is my favorite way to take in all of the magic to be found in the parks and resorts.

The monorail is also a great way to get your bearings at EPCOT, as one of the lines takes you into the park, around Future World, past World Showcase, and then back to the entrance. Now you can disembark and know where you want to visit first!

216+

Monorail Purple heading to the entrance via Future World

The train or monorail can give you the same introduction at the Disneyland park in California, or any of the other Disney parks that have these forms of transportation.

I mention this thought of getting your bearings first before racing to an attraction because I believe it is something that Walt intended. A bold statement, I know, but here is my reasoning: Walt wanted a popcorn dispenser just inside the entrance to Disneyland. He thought that the smell of the hot butter would be inviting and get people in the mood for what they were going to discover beyond Main Street. He hoped to get people to slow down and to give them the time they needed to put the real world behind them.

I don’t know about you, but I always breathe a huge sigh of relief when I arrive at a Disney park, and am only too ready to slow down and enjoy the experience! Try it yourself, whether you are going to visit for the first time, or the umpteenth time. I guarantee it will enhance your visit!

We hope you have enjoyed your little vacation on our blog!

Cars Land – Is It a Real Butte?

One reason I love photographing at a Disney park or resort is because of the high level of detail the Imagineers put into everything. It’s not enough to make something look like a thing, but it must make you believe you are seeing the actual thing!

CA

Cars Land landscape at Disneyland, California

Radiator Springs Racers takes its riders through some of the most breath-taking scenery ever built. But the building is so well done that you’ll believe it was the result of millions of years of natural sculpting!

In the picture above, I tried to further the cheat by obscuring the butte behind other objects, but almost blacking out those objects to make the subject of my photograph pop.

You’d almost believe I took this shot along Route 66 instead of inside a fictional place called Disneyland!

Adorable Plush Eeyore from the Hallmark Store

Thanks for noticing this post. Once again I’ve been made into a little plush animal. It’s… dreadful. But I suppose I’ll learn to live with it.”

Yes, Eeyore, the world just loves you! And so those of us without a little black rain cloud following us around, we get a little ray of sunshine that looks something like this:

Newbies 001

Oh. I’m cute. And smiling? I’m so depressed!”

Well, Eeyore might not be enjoying himself today, but my wife is now that she has this little plush for her very own!

After our last Disney vacation, we stopped off at no less than three Disney Stores to cap off our trip with some souvenir purchases. But to our surprise, there wasn’t too much new merchandise to choose from. But determined to find something, we visited a Hallmark store in the same mall as the last Disney Store we visited, and… Eureka!

We walked away with over half a dozen great Disney items. What does it say when a secondary Disney retailer has better stuff than the Disney Store?

Since then, we have been checking out Hallmark on a regular basis. So if you can’t get to a Disney Store, don’t forget the Disney treasures waiting for you at Hallmark!

Well, I guess this is the end. Thanks for looking at my butt.”

Pixar’s Luxo Jr. – Sort of…

One of Pixar’s earliest successes was with a little character called Luxo Jr., the little lamp who just couldn’t contain his enthusiasm!

Luxo Jr

Luxo Jr. was a 1986 American computer-animated short film produced by Pixar and directed by John Lasseter. The two-minute short film revolves around one larger and one smaller desk lamp. The larger lamp, named Luxo Sr., looks on while the smaller, “younger” Luxo Jr. plays exuberantly with a ball that it accidentally deflates. It is the source of the hopping desk lamp included in Pixar’s corporate logo.

And now in a case of life imitating art imitating life, I bring you Luxo Jr. the LED Articulating Book Light:

Newbies 006     Newbies 007

A dollar store find

OK, I admit this is not a piece of official Disney-Pixar merchandise, but it is an accurate representation of the original Luxo lamps that the Pixar Short was based on. So in my book, it counts! And you can see what products Luxo is producing now by clicking here. For a short history of the famous Luxo lamp, click here.

Newbies 009

Luxo stands about 3″ tall, if he stands up straight

Newbies 011     Newbies 012

So what do you think? Can I let this little guy join my Disney collection? Or should I brand him an imposter?

Newbies 014

I hope you can find it in your hearts to accept him, because he’s already made himself at home!

Greenfield Village ‘Spiderweb’ Drain Cover

We love to visit Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. It yields so many photographic opportunities!

Vacation 2013 Greenfield Village 039

Taken in 2013

The cover says ‘Dump No Waste, Drains to Waterways’ but what caught my eye was the pattern. It looked like a spider’s web to me. But upon closer inspection, you can also see four fish, denoting the waterways the warning message references.

Like the man said, it’s all in the details!

Places: Walt Disney World Value Resorts Overview

Value Resorts Offer Way More Eye Candy

AoA Resort

Today we are reviewing the value resorts at Walt Disney World.

It is common to think of the value resorts only in terms of money. How much can I save by staying at one? But we might also think of them in terms of fun for families. How kid-friendly are they? Or we might choose one based on location. How close is it to my favorite theme park? All of these reasons for staying at a value resort are valid!

But you just know they aren’t the reasons I’m going to promote! No, I love the value resorts because I honestly feel they have a higher level of theming than both the moderate and deluxe resorts. Visit the Coronado Springs  or Polynesian resorts and you’ll come away with a few dozen photographs. Visit a value resort, like the Art of Animation (pictured above) and you can potentially come away with literally hundreds of amazing shots!

Pop Century

Pop Century Resort

Each value resort has a theme worthy of a photo essay! So let’s break them down:

All-Star Music – Music styles include: Calypso; Rock; Country; Broadway; and Jazz

All-Star Sports – Duh! But seriously, the sports represented are: Surfing; Baseball; Basketball; Tennis; and American Football

All-Star Movies – Expect to see giant representations of: 101 Dalmatians; Toy Story; Fantasia; The Mighty Ducks; and Herbie, The Love Bug

Pop Century Resort – Featuring pop cultural icons such as the: Yo-Yo, Mickey Phone (pictured above), Big Wheels, and too many more to list here!

Art of Animation – Four mega-themes: Cars; Little Mermaid; Finding Nemo; and Lion King

Of these five resorts, I’d say the best for theming are the Pop Century and Art of Animation. This is not to say the other resorts don’t yield magnificent photo opportunities, especially if music, sports, or movies are your thing. But Disney seems to have added so much more to the last two value resorts.

All Star Music

All-Star Music Resort

Karen and I stay almost exclusively at value resorts, even though we don’t have children, and could save up to stay at more expensive lodgings. But just walking through the themed walkways of each section of a value resort almost makes our vacations!

So when you’re looking to book your next on-site resort, don’t forget to consider the most themed resorts of all: Disney’s All-Star and Value Resorts!

Disney Adventure Is Out There! – Adventure Tower, Disneyland

Adventure

If you have a chance to visit the Disneyland Hotel, be sure to check out this great sign outside the Adventureland Tower. It’s 3D and is a great nod to the famous Jungle Cruise attraction in the neighboring Disneyland!
