Sights on the Water at Walt Disney World

One of the main advantages of visiting Walt Disney World over any other Disney park worldwide are the extensive waterways. The Seven Seas Lagoon and Lake Buena Vista can be plied using a variety of rented watercraft or by boarding one of the many complimentary watercraft supplied by Disney transportation.

Such as the boats in the following shots:

Disney’s José Carioca Cookie Jar

Polly want a cookie? Actually, we should ask if José wants one, as today’s collectible is that famous anthropomorphized parrot from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. And he’s looking as dapper as ever:

Jose Cookie Jar 001

Leeds circa 1940-1970

José was created in 1942 for the movie Saludos Amigos as a friend of Donald Duck, described by Time as “a dapper Brazilian parrot”. He returned in the 1944 film The Three Caballeros along with Donald and a Mexican rooster named Panchito Pistoles.

Jose Cookie Jar 002     Jose Cookie Jar 003

This cookie jar is typical of the work produced by Leeds with the minimal cold paint trim. Many examples you find have much of the paints rubbed off, especially the smaller salt and pepper shakers, as they would be handled more often than the bigger cookie jars.

Jose Cookie Jar 004

Minimal detailing is especially evident from behind

Jose Cookie Jar 005

Don’t try this at home!

The more common José Carioca cookie jar is a double-sided version with Donald Duck. You can find many of these on eBay and other selling sites. Prices fluctuate wildly from $50.00 to $250.00 or more, depending on condition. Missing paint is the most common problem that lowers the price.

Fewer examples of the stand-alone José Carioca cookie jar are available, even online, which makes its price higher and more stable. Still, you should be able to find a nice one for around $100.00 or slightly higher. Luckily, I found mine on a local selling site for just $20.00 CAN.

Jose Cookie Jar 006

‘Joe Carioca from The Three Caballeros Walt Disney USA’

Notice it identifies the character as ‘Joe’. This is appropriate as ‘José is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Joseph. It is pronounced jo-SE in case you were wondering. And the feminine form is Josefa. The popularity of the name peaked in the year 2000 and is still slightly more popular now than it was in the 1940’s.

Jose Character Suit

Fun Fact: “Carioca” is a term which refers to a person born in Brazil. So basically his name means ‘Joe of Brazil’.

Terribly British Disney T-Shirts

While browsing the shops around the World Showcase in Epcot at Walt Disney World (man, I hate typing descriptive set-up sentences like that!) you will invariably come across some interesting merchandise.

Such as:

British Disney T 1

The saying that launched a 1,000 copies

According to Wikipedia, this slogan got its start thusly: “Keep Calm and Carry On was a motivational poster produced by the British government in 1939 in preparation for the Second World War. The poster was intended to raise the morale of the British public, threatened with widely predicted mass air attacks on major cities. Although 2.45 million copies were printed, and although the Blitz did in fact take place, the poster was hardly ever publicly displayed and was little known until a copy was rediscovered in 2000 at Barter Books, a bookshop in Alnwick. It has since been re-issued by a number of private companies, and has been used as the decorative theme for a range of products.

And now you can have it plastered across your chest via the wearing of the above t-shirt. And be sure to keep a stiff upper lip when you do so!

British Disney T 3

“We are not amused.”

Minnie takes a royal turn as the Queen of Boredom, I think, as she sits on her throne and looks down on us all. Oh well, at least she isn’t yelling “Off with their heads!”

British Disney T 2

“Hello? Mickey Mouse calling!”

Did you know that there are three authentic British call boxes near the England Pavilion? Did you know that you can make calls from them? Did you know that the numbers for them have been published, so you can call Epcot and talk to whomever answers?

The numbers are, as far as I know:

Left:   407-827-9862

Center:   407-827-9863

Right:   407-827-9861

So give it a try! And if it works and you have fun, I will accept your thanks. If you get arrested for pranking, you never heard of Disney Nouns!

Epcot – Art of Disney Exhibits

One of the best things about visiting a Disney park is the shopping. And I especially love browsing the art stores! In Epcot there is the Art of Disney in Future World.

It’s a unique shopping experience with many prints, photos and even real paintings of the Disney World Parks and characters. You can also see the artist in residence working on current projects, but more on him later.

So without further ado, here are some of the exhibits to be seen in the Art of Disney store:

Art of Disney 1

Art of Disney 2     Art of Disney 3

Art of Disney 4

Hard to resist this Autopia/Speedway inspired print!

Art of Disney 5

Mickey and a Steam Train = Walt’s Spirit!

Art of Disney 7     Art of Disney 9

So many great works of art, unfortunately out of my budget! But maybe someday…

Now to visit the artist in residence. You may be surprised to see who it is today:

Art of Disney 10

OK, is that Huey, Dewey, or Louie?

Well, whichever one it is, note what he is working on! It’s the famous Mickey-themed rendering of Norman Rockwell’s Triple Self Portrait. For more on this piece, and the Walt-themed version as well, and another Rockwell picture that (doesn’t quite) feature Donald’s three nephews, check out the link!

Under the Sea Base Alpha at Epcot

OK, ‘under the sea’ is usually Ariel’s territory, but today she is just going to have to give a little bit of it up to her fishy friends. And a couple of scuba divers.

Welcome to the tank of Sea Base Alpha:

Here’s one of those divers now!

Those Hidden Mickeys are everywhere!

Now you would think that inside the tank would be where all the danger was to be found. But as the hapless man below is about to find out, danger can be anywhere:

Fish are friends. Humans are food!

The Living Seas in Epcot is an excellent place to visit if you like edutainment, talking turtles, and yes, that little element of danger!

Epcot’s Germany Pavilion Model Train Layout

Today we return to the World Showcase inside Epcot to visit the Germany Pavilion. And what is our favorite part of this area?

Germany Trains 1

A miniature German village houses three model trains much to the guests’ delight. So let’s get on board and ride the rails together:

I hope we don’t wake up the whole neighborhood!

Gran Fiesta Tour Donald Duck Piñata

One of my favorite pavilions in Epcot’s World Showcase is Mexico:

Mexico Pavilion

The theming is great and I love the Gran Fiesta Tour with the Three Caballeros:

Gran Fiesta Tour Entrance  Gran Fiesta Tour Sign

And of course, the Caballero we all know the best is Donald Duck! But sometimes, it just seems that he doesn’t get the respect he deserves:

Pinata Scene

That’s got to hurt!

I remember seeing this scene and really enjoying it. Then when I was browsing the gift shops, I saw this:

Pinata Display

Pinata Donald

I regret not buying one!

So if you did buy one, would you fill it with candy and whack it open? Or save the poor little guy for display?

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Artwork

Disney’s newest ‘value’ resort is a wonderful example of theming. It is divided into four sections based on four Disney movie franchises: Cars, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, and The Lion King.

Art of Animation Resort

Inside the resort you can find many pieces of artwork based on the world’s of these movies. I have examples from The Lion King:

And some great undersea murals from The Little Mermaid:

Disney’s PhotoPass Picture Tips

My wife and I are Walt Disney World fans. We have gone as a couple six times and I have gone an additional two times, as a youth. We have also gone on one Disney Cruise and, as this post will feature, we have gone once to Disneyland.

We never thought we’d make it to California to visit Walt’s first park, but in 2013 the dream came true. It was unseasonably cold, but we made the best of it.

So join us on a trip down memory lane as we share our Disney PhotoPass pictures. Afterwards, I will have some tips for you to make your pictures the best they can be:

Big Red

Duffy     Sailor Donald

Bugs Land

Cars Land Sign

Cozy Cone Motel     Mater

McQueen

Castle     Walt and Mickey

Don’t forget, you can also purchase ride photos and have them attached to your PhotoPass account. Most rides with photo-ops have this feature now.

Ride Photo Splash Mt     Ride Photo RS Racers

Disney’s PhotoPass is quite expensive so here are some tips to maximize the value:

  • Try to use one PhotoPass Card for your family or group, for simplicity later on.
  • Pose for as many PhotoPass Photographers as possible in as many places.
  • Plan ahead. Pick three poses per set-up and be prepared to do them quickly.
  • Try to spread your posing out over several days so your clothing will change.

These are just a few suggestions that you will notice we didn’t follow in our PhotoPass photographs above. I give advice better than I take it!

The most obvious advantage to using Disney’s PhotoPass is that your whole family or group can be in the picture. Remember, they will also use your camera, but likely the camera they are using will take better pictures.

And don’t forget to say ‘Cheese!’ Mickey likes that.

Norman Rockwell Paints Huey, Dewey, and Louie

Everyone knows about the Disney tie-in with Norman Rockwell where an artist took-off Rockwell’s Triple Self Portrait by inserting Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse in place of Rockwell. If not, here are the two images:

Triple Self Portrait     Disney Version

But while staying at a friend’s place recently, my wife spotted an actual Disney presence in a Norman Rockwell painting, this time, painted by the Master himself. The piece is called Shuffleton’s Barber Shop and is pictured below:

Shuffleton's Barbershop

From the title of this post, no doubt you are expecting to see Huey, Dewey, and Louie visiting the Barber Shop. They are there, but you have to look very carefully to see them.

Zoom in on the bottom left corner, specifically, on the magazine rack where you can see many comic books. Look closer, and you’ll see:

Close up

And there they are!

This painting was so popular that Hallmark Movie Channel made it into a film in 2013:

Movie case

Here is a YouTube video showing the trailer:

So once again it just goes to show that you never know where a Disney reference will pop up! But you do know that when they do, I’ll be there!
