The Disney Treasury PUZZLE

Ah, the great institution of the yard sale. What else can get so many people to spend a day just driving around buying other people’s junk? As one of those people going from yard sale to yard sale I’m looking for a treasure. For as they say: “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!”

Today, I found a treasure with ‘treasure’ kind of in its name:

Disney Treasury Puzzle 001

The Disney Treasury/Walt Disney Archives

Thanks to Dave Smith, who is the founder and former chief archivist at the Walt Disney Archives, for starting Disney on the path of preserving its heritage. Due to his efforts we now have a wealth of collectibles and animation artifacts to appreciate for years to come!

He joined the company on June 22, 1970. His first task was to document all the items in Walt Disney’s office which had sat dormant since his death in 1966. I don’t think there was a puzzle on his desk…

Disney Treasury Puzzle 002

Since then he has compiled one of the most impressive collections of Disneyana in the world, as depicted on the cover of the above puzzle box.

Disney Treasury Puzzle 003Unopened, so all pieces obviously complete

It’s fun to look at images like the one on The Disney Treasury puzzle box to see how many items are in your personal collection. I have quite a few of the items but not as many as I would like!

There is a display case in The Disneyland Hotel that looks quite similar to the image here, and for a good reason. It’s because this puzzle is a photograph of that exact showcase! And I was standing in front of it in 2013:

DLH 26  DLH 27  DLH 28

Dare to compare

You can look from left to right in the above images and compare the display case to the puzzle box image. Note that if you look at the left-most image of the display case, you’ll see what didn’t make it onto the puzzle box cover.

I’m constantly amazed at how many Disney connections can be made, sometimes years apart!

Places: Disney’s Castaway Cay FLOWERS

In 2015 we went on our first and last Disney Caribbean Cruise. We had the obligatory stop-over at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

It rained all day when we were there except for about 30 minutes when I was able to do a little photography. Fortunately even on an overcast day there were many things of beauty to capture on ‘film’ like:

Disney's Castaway Cay

And these are?

I don’t know. Hey, I’m a photographer, not a botanist! But I do know what I like and these looked magnificent. And if you look and think about it, could this be a mom and dad with one on the way?

Disney Movie Rewards MINI-POSTERS

I’m not completely sure how I earned this reward but I think it had something to do with buying the Inside Out movie along with possibly the Tomorrowland movie which unlocked a special offer. The special offer was four 8″ x 10″ mini-posters. I just had to pay shipping. Here is the folder they came in:

Movie Rewards Bonus 006

Nothing special there…

Two mini-posters were from Inside Out. One featured Joy:

Movie Rewards Bonus 007

She just loves those memories!

The other depicts Joy and Bing Bong riding Riley’s Train of Thought:

Movie Rewards Bonus 008

That would be quite the trip!

The other two were reproductions of Disneyland’s Tomorrowland attraction posters featuring

Movie Rewards Bonus 009     Movie Rewards Bonus 011

Two of the best!

I would have thought A Small World would have been used instead of Space Mountain being as it appeared in the film.

Each mini-poster is presented on high gloss card stock and would be very suitable for framing. Well worth the three or four dollars it cost me for shipping!

Walt Disney World 25th Anniversary COMMEMORATIVE PLATE

The collectible plate market crashed many years ago but manufacturers are still producing them like nothing happened. Prices for new plates can still reach over $50.00 but most often retail for just under $30.00 for most designs.

Disney-themed plates can always find a market. Today I am sharing a release from 1996:

Movie Rewards Bonus 001     Movie Rewards Bonus 002

Nice box packaging

This was a release to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Walt Disney World opening in 1971. It features the infamous ‘Birthday Cake’ Castle that Disney fans love to hate! I regret not being able to see it back then and feel that kudos should be given for taking such a promotional risk with an icon like Cinderella Castle.

Let’s have a look inside the box:

Movie Rewards Bonus 003

I was happy to find this in its original packaging with the price tag still attached. It sold for $35.00 US in 1996 but I paid only $12.50 CAN in 2016. Again, this is evidence that plates just aren’t a good collectible investment so buy what you like and plan on keeping it.

Below is an enlargement of the promotional spiel and a blurb about the artist, Charles Wissig:

Disney Collector Plates 011

Below are pictures of the front and back of the plate:

Movie Rewards Bonus 004     Disney Collector Plates 015

Very nice colorful design

If you are a plate collector you probably noticed the absence of a firing day limit. A low number of firing days means that the plate is rarer than those with a higher number of firing days. This was used to promote plates back in their day and was supposed to drive after-market prices higher. This worked initially but fell off quickly.

The fact that no firing limit is noted for this plate means that many were made which directly contributes to the plate being common and easily obtained in the after-market on eBay and other selling sites. In fact, you can find one on eBay right now (June, 2016) for just $15.00 CAN.

Value aside it is a very nice plate that I am glad to add to my growing collection.

TOP 5 Worst Decisions Made by Disney

No matter how good a company is they are bound to make a mistake or two along the way to success. In the case of Disney their mistakes seem to be amplified because of the intense scrutiny fans put the company under.

But every company has to honestly admit that some decisions just have no defense! So here is my Top 5 List of the worst decisions that Disney has made:

BAD   DECISION   NUMBER   FIVE

SEQUELS

Disney Sequel Montage

Just make it stop. Direct-to-video sequels is how it all began and we can only thank whatever the power was that stopped these bombs from being theatrical releases! But in today’s world most sequels are theatrical releases, like Toy Story 2-4 and Cars 2 and Finding Dory and soon-to-be Frozen 2 (kill me the day before it opens!) and and and and and.

Funny Story: After the success of Zootopia and its plus-billion box office take one social media source speculated that finally Disney would see the value of original stories and create more. Know what I thought? Here comes Zootopia 2! This time Nick goes back to Bunnyburrow with Judy and we have the typical reverse situation as Nick is the fox-out-of-water character and must learn to adjust to doing things a different way. Do I have a future writing sequels or what?

Don’t believe me that this could happen? I predict Zootopia 3 in 2022.

BAD   DECISION   NUMBER   FOUR

ACQUIRING PIXAR

Pixar Studios

The original Brain Trust of Pixar came up with most of the first hit films for the company. And just about the time those ideas had been used up Disney acquired Pixar and things were never the same.

Pixar has shifted gears from wildly original films that touch our hearts to a long run of sequels that prove you can’t catch lightning in a bottle twice. With the exception of Inside Out most Disney/Pixar films have been disappointing. And there seems to be mostly sequels in the company’s future.

It was inevitable that Pixar would stumble at some point but it seems that the acquisition speeded that eventuality up considerably!

BAD   DECISION   NUMBER   THREE

REMOVING CAST MEMBERS FROM RIDES

Jungle Cruise Skipper

Don’t worry, Disney has no plans to remove the Skippers from the Jungle Cruise. Or… do they? We’ve already lost the Cast Members from Living With the Land to be left with a recorded lecture and a computer-guided boat. This obvious cost-cutting measure could easily spread to more attractions!

I visited Disneyland and had the pleasure of riding the Storybook Canal boat for the first time with a Cast Member in costume giving us a lively and personal narration of the kingdoms we passed through. Unfortunately I spent the entire trip wondering what it would be like without our pilot. In the back of my mind I saw an accountant with a pink slip waiting back at the dock!

The Great Movie Ride and other attractions are all in the cross-hairs too. It could be only a matter of time before the only Cast Member you see is the one checking your lap bar.

BAD   DECISION   NUMBER   TWO

HOW D23 IS BEING HANDLED

D23 Logo

At first it seemed like the perfect fan club for Disney fanatics and it did live up to that image for the first few years. But then came changes to the membership perks and magazine gifts.

The gilding completely fell off the lily when the majority of members started complaining about how the D23 Expo is handled. Unfair distribution of limited edition collectables and overcrowding are just two of the issues raised. Of course, that hasn’t stopped members from attending and renewing their subscriptions, so the problem isn’t at a critical stage… yet!

My worry here is that many Disney magazines and official fan clubs have failed and I just hope Disney has learned enough from those failures to listen to the complaints about this one and find a way to keep it alive!

BAD   DECISION   NUMBER   ONE

SHUTTING DOWN

Disney Infinity Logo

I was in California at the El Capitan Theatre for the official kick-off of this excellent gaming system. It appeared to have all the earmarks of success and Disney gave it a big publicity push to get it started.

It had so many good features not the least of which was the beautiful and collectible play figures that were produced in series over the life of the game. The system made it to a 3.0 version before the word came down that Disney had had enough. But why scuttle such a wildly popular product?

The problem I see is that 2.0 figures couldn’t be played on 1.0 systems which changed my excitement to open disgust for Disney’s obvious money-grab ploy! And 3.0 figures can’t be played on 1.0 or 2.0 systems which means that not only would you have to shell out for new figures every year but also for new bases. I lost interest at this point. I think many others did as well and this probably led to a drop in sales which led to the real reason for the demise of Infinity: Money.

With billions of dollars being raked in from the movie division and the Marvel acquisition along with how well the parks are doing, surely Disney could have afforded to keep the Infinity brand going while changes were made to fix the declining monetary gains of the product. Disney needs to learn that sometimes short-term loses can be made into long-term gains!

CONCLUSION: Disney will continue to make bad decisions. Fans will continue to call them out on these bad decisions. Bloggers will continue to make Top 5 Lists to highlight the same bad decisions.

LAMPWICK Figurine from Pinocchio

Over the years I’ve watched The Antiques Roadshow hoping to see some Disney items. But they don’t show up very often. But recently an episode had an unusual find:

Pinocchio figurine 002

Lampwick Plaster Figurine

This is Pinocchio’s main friend in the movie but also the one who draws the poor puppet into all sorts of trouble. Trouble like being turned into a donkey! This figurine is a sculpt of the character in his donkey form.

Pinocchio figurine 001

Looks pretty angry!

The expert surmised that this was a rare plaster casting used by animators as a reference while animating the character. If so, this figurine would be valuable indeed, as they were not sold to the public. So finding one in circulation is rare!

But looking at the poor quality of the casting makes me wonder if this is true. And I thought that each reference figure was made as a one-off in clay and that multiple copies were not made. But if the expert is right, it was a find for the owner!

Pinocchio figurine 003

The price is right!

I wish I had found this figurine!

Walt Disney World ‘2000’ Collector Plate

Most of the year-themed collectors merchandise tends to be a bit generic. Just a bunch of Disney characters standing around a number while smiling and waving. So if you buy a 2016 t-shirt at Walt Disney World to commemorate your visit, you will have only the remainder of the year to wear it, and then it really had nothing to offer.

The commemorative plate that I am sharing in this post fits the year-themed design standard. Let’s have a look and then we can discuss why this plate will have more staying power than that 1997 coffee mug in your cupboard:

2000 Collector Plate 003

2000 – Celebrate the Future Hand in Hand

This was a big celebration for Walt Disney World if not the whole real world. Of course we were all waiting for our computers to explode but still managed to get to the parks for some fun.

2000 Collector Plate 001     2000 Collector Plate 002

Nice packaging

The original price for this plate was $25.00 US which was probably a bit pricey back in 2000. They are common today being found on any resale sight for considerably less. I paid just $12.50 CAN for this one.

2000 Collector Plate 004

For decorative purposes only

This plate has been in its packaging since it was purchased and still has the price sticker affixed to the plate itself.

So back to the year-themed design. Because the year 2000 was a world milestone, this plate, and by extension perhaps any of the 2000 themed merchandise, has more staying power. Displaying this would make sense.

What some people thought did not make sense was this:

Spaceship Earth 2000

Spaceship Earth with Mickey Hand & 2000 Emblem

The wand and “2000” were installed in celebration of the new millennium, but the ‘2000’ was changed to “Epcot” in 2001. The Mickey hand and wand remained atop Spaceship Earth until it was removed in 2007, just in time for Epcot’s 25th anniversary. Celebrate the Future Hand in Hand was the theme song for the Epcot Millennium Celebration at Walt Disney World that ran from October 1999 to January 1, 2001.

I wasn’t there to see the ‘2000’ but did see the ‘Epcot’ emblem during my first trip to Walt Disney World with my wife in 2006. It’s interesting that the plate design does not include this feature atop Spaceship Earth.

So did you appreciate the addition of the wand and emblems atop Spaceship Earth?

Visiting Four DISNEY PARKS in Just One Day!

Today we are looking at strategies to tackle all four Walt Disney World parks in just one day!

SET   REALISTIC   GOALS

Can you visit every attraction and see every show in all four Walt Disney World parks in just one day? Um, no. Could you do it in a week? Still no. Could you do it in a month? OK, yes, probably in a month. But who can spend that much time at Disney at one go!

So let’s go back to the unrealistic premise of visiting all four parks in just one day and see what realistic goals we could set to achieve this:

GOAL   NUMBER   ONE

Take advantage of Extra Magic Hours

Check the park schedules to see which park is opening early and which park is opening late. Compare these times to the regular operating hours of the other parks on your day of choice to maximize your chances of visiting all four parks.

Four Parks

You may need to start a little earlier and be willing to put in a grueling day, and probably stay out past your usual bedtime. But you’re on vacation so… who needs sleep?

GOAL   NUMBER   TWO

Reduce traveling times

If possible, in line with Goal Number One, try to move from park to park in a circular pattern. If you start with The Magic Kingdom, then travel clockwise on the Resort Monorail line to the Transportation and Ticket Center, switch to the Epcot Monorail line and ride it to Epcot. Your next park will then be Disney’s Hollywood Studios which you can reach by boat from Epcot. Lastly, you will have to take a bus to arrive at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Of course, if you have a car, it may be quicker to drive between the parks. But keep in mind that traffic, far-away parking spaces, and tram delays could reduce your time in the parks.

WDW Map

Of course, you may need to go counter-clockwise if park times dictate that, but obviously you will want to avoid randomly bouncing from park to park like a ball in a pinball machine as this will eat away at your goal of visiting all four parks in just one day!

GOAL   NUMBER   THREE

Choose in advance what you will do in each park

Vacation Proverb: He who looks at everything experiences nothing. The Moral? Keep your head down and get’er done!

Eyes Eyes Eyes

Assuming you can start your day at 9 am and have to end your day at 10 pm (possibly later) that would mean you will have approximately just three hours in each park with one hour (at least) being eaten up by travel.

So advance planning is a must! Ask yourself – What is the best thing about each park? Here are my suggestions:

The Magic Kingdom – Children’s Attractions/Shopping

Epcot – World Showcase

Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Thrill Rides

Disney’s Animal Kingdom – Kilimanjaro Safaris and Maharajah Jungle Trek

Your tastes may be different, so check out the attractions in each park and see what each park does best, in your opinion, and focus on only that during your visit to the park in question.

GOAL   NUMBER   FOUR

Don’t rush!

As mentioned in Goal Number Three, you will have only about three hours in each park. But to see what you want you can vary the amount of time spent in each park. This way, you won’t have to be like the White Rabbit, rushing from ride to attraction to park!

Rushing

For example, following my suggestions in Goal Number Three, you may want to spend four hours in The Magic Kingdom (especially if you have children), the full three-hour allotment in Epcot, only two hours in Disney’s Hollywood Studios (as there are really only three main thrill rides available) and again the full three-hour allotment for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Leaving DAK until last is also wise for if you are running out of time, as there is arguably less to see and do in this park.

GOAL   NUMBER   FIVE

Blow off the next day!

Relax! Don’t plan anything for the morning of the next day. Get up a little later, sleep-in…

Beautiful Sleeper

… and then have a nice brunch. Chill at the Resort and hit the pool in the early afternoon. Plan a nice dinner at a themed restaurant (maybe a character affair) to make up for the rushed food options you had to endure during your park marathon.

I think if you follow these five realistic goals, you will be able to visit all four parks in just one day, and survive to tell about it! Of course, I use the term ‘survive’ loosely.

Disney’s Real-Life TOW MATER

I love attending the special events in Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford Museum. In 2009 I took the following picture during the Motor Muster car show:

Real Tow Mater

Remind you of anyone?

The character of Tow Mater in the Pixar film Cars was all brown and rusty when we first met him. But we learn via a flashback that he was once quite a looker! He was all clean and shiny and… blue.

The owner of this vintage tow truck did a nice job of restoring her. The mechanical aspects of the towing apparatus make for a good shot! Although I don’t think the plastic cooler is period specific.

Disney Movie Rewards – Goofy How To PRINTABLES

I’ve really enjoyed redeeming rewards from Disney Movie Rewards! Every time I go to a movie or buy it in the stores I can collect points towards exclusive Disney merchandise. Some of these items would be quite elaborate and expensive if you had to buy them, but others can just be fun.

And that brings us to the printables of today’s post. For only 5 points you can download pages to your computer and then simply print them out. I just did this and received three 8 1/2″ by 11″ mini-posters depicting some of Goofy’s best How-to Shorts.

Let’s have a look at the first one:

Goofy Sports Printables 001

Released in September of 1942

How to Play Baseball was produced at the request of Samuel Goldwyn and first shown to accompany the 1942 feature film The Pride of the Yankees. This is also the very first of the Goofy How-to series of Shorts. It was directed by Jack Kinney.

Goofy Sports Printables 003

Released in 1942

In this cartoon, Goofy provides an educational treatise on swimming and diving with questionable results. The Short was also directed by Jack Kinney.

Goofy Sports Printables 002

Released in September of 1944

The Goofies of Taxidermy Tech take on the Goofies of Anthropology A and M. The seven and a half minute film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. It was directed by Charles Nichols.

After the success of How to Play Baseball,  nine more How-to Shorts were produced in Walt Disney’s lifetime: How to Swim and How to Fish; (both also in 1942); How to Be a Sailor, How to Play Football, and How to Play Golf (1944); How to Ride a Horse (1950, originally included in The Reluctant Dragon in 1941); How to Be a Detective (1952); and How to Sleep and How to Dance (both 1953).

A similar How-to Short was released in 2007 called How to Hook Up Your Home Theater directed by Kevin Deters and co-directed by Stevie Wermers-Skelton. This is the first theatrical Goofy solo cartoon short made in 46 years, since Aquamania. This short follows Goofy as he buys and then sets up his home cinema system, to watch football (nod, nod.)

These printables are great ways to get your Disney fix without depleting your Disney Reward points!
