PACIFIC Presents ‘The Rocketeer’ COMIC BOOK by Dave Stevens

I love The Rocketeer even though the 1991 movie could have been better. I think Disney handled the character fairly well but if only they had used him more extensively! Can you imagine him as a walk-around character in Tomorrowland? Too awesome that would be!

Also awesome is this comic book from 1983 that I found recently:

The Rocketeer Comic Book 002

So what do I have here? Here is a not-so brief history of The Rocketeer in comic form from Wikipedia: The Rocketeer’s first adventure appeared in 1982 as a backup feature in issues #2 and #3 of Mike Grell’s Starslayer series from Pacific Comics. Two more installments appeared in Pacific’s showcase comic Pacific Presents #1 and 2 (the issue you see above). This fourth chapter ended in a cliffhanger that was later concluded in a special Rocketeer issue released by Eclipse Comics. The story was continued in the Rocketeer Adventure Magazine. Two issues were published by Comico Comics in 1988 and 1989; the third installment was not published until 1995, six years later by Dark Horse Comics. In 1991 comics artist Russ Heath illustrated the graphic novel The Rocketeer, The Official Movie Adaptation, based on Walt Disney’s 1991 feature film The Rocketeer.

So what I have is the fourth installment of Dave Stevens original treatment of the character, printed before Disney did the movie. Now that’s cool!

Dave Stevens

Dave Stevens – 1982

Let’s have a look at the artwork:

The Rocketeer Comic Book 003

The Rocketeer Comic Book 004

Stevens definitely has a unique style that is fitted to the type of material. The major difference between his original version and Disney’s cleaned-up movie version is found in the depiction of Cliff Secord’s girlfriend Betty. In the comic, at least the issue I have, she is drawn completely nude in every panel. She is this way because she is in the habit of posing for ‘art photos’ to pay her way in the world. Of course, Stevens is careful not to show the naughty bits, but the images are too provocative to show here!

As was the case with the first two appearances of the Rocketeer he has to share the book with another character story, this time a weird one called The Missing Man by Steve Ditko:

The Rocketeer Comic Book 005          The Rocketeer Comic Book 006

You may remember Ditko from his ground-breaking work on the original Doctor Strange comic book. The Missing Man features his unique style of artwork but in a story and with a character so offbeat one wonders why he bothered!

The story features wife and child beating and truly horrible dialogue which just goes to show that even comic legends can produce bad content.

In conclusion, I have a rather funny bit of business to finish this post with:

The Rocketeer Comic Book 008

A Betty Look-alike contest?

The only way to determine if a girl looked like Betty would be to compare her to the artwork in the comic. Artwork that only shows Betty… in the nude! So presumably a boyfriend would have to convince his sweetheart to strip down and pose for a photograph with ‘a clear image of the facial features’, according to the rules. I guess it was OK if her naughty bits were blurry.

I’m joking as it is obvious the publishers only wanted a head shot. Or… did they?

Finding a vintage issue of the source material for a Disney movie was a nice surprise, as I didn’t realize that the comic was that old when I bought it!

The WINDSOR STAR Weekend Magazine

This large format 28-page magazine supplement was quite an impressive publication in its day! The two copies that I have were inserted into the weekend edition of The Windsor Star newspaper in the late 1970’s. It had both black and white and color pages.

Weekend Magazine Covers 001

September 17th and November 5th, 1977

I found these at a yard sale just outside of Windsor, ON. I paid $2.00 a piece for them which is funny when you consider that they were given away free with a newspaper almost 40 years ago!

But I think you can guess why I bought them?

Weekend Magazine 008     Weekend Magazine 009

10 1/2″ x 12″

Obviously Mickey and Minnie caught my eye and so buying that issue was a no-brainer. I also love vintage television programs so the other issue also became a must-have.

So let’s take a look at the content of the article entitled 50 Years of Mickey Mouse:

Weekend Magazine 010

Weekend Magazine 011

Weekend Magazine 012

This was a fun but brief article which you are welcome to read by enlarging the pictures above. I especially enjoyed page 11 as I have some of the merchandise pictured there!

Apart from the cover story in the second issue of this set, I found another Disney reference inside. Disney placed an advertisement on pages 14 and 15:

Weekend Magazine 002

Who wants some cookies?

The contest would award 40 vacation trips to Walt Disney World, 100 authentic Mickey Mouse watches, and 200 Fantasia soundtracks. All you had to do was state how many cookies you could see in the jar. Disney even made it easier by giving the possible answers in the form of multiple choice on the entry form.

Weekend Magazine 003          Weekend Magazine 004

Enlarge and read those rules!

Unfortunately we are all 39 years too late to enter. Just our luck, eh! But it is still fun to see these old promotions and product tie-ins.

So just how many cookies were in the jar? Was it 9, 14, 21, 35, or 49? Who cares, just give me one! Hey, stale or not, I love me some cookies!

COLLECTORS’ SHOWCASE Vintage Magazines

There’s nothing I love as much as old collectibles than old magazines about old collectibles! And recently I was able to pick up thirteen issues of Collectors’ Showcase, ‘America’s Premiere Pictorial Magazine for Collectors’. Long name, great content!

Collectors Showcase Mags 001

Now why are these old and out of date magazines of value today? First, a collector can use them to source and identify hard to find or difficult to classify items. Often there will be articles about specific items giving date of manufacture and company names. Second, if the magazine records prices, a collector can track values over the years. Third, due to the advertising of new-at-the-time collectibles, original pricing can be determined for many items.

And of course, Fourth, a collector just loves to look at old toys!

Collectors Showcase Mags 003

Hey, it’s Disney!

Being a Disney collector, I obviously like to look for old magazines that feature Disney items, like the one above. Here are a few items I found in these thirteen issues:

Collectors Showcase Mags 006

How many Disney buttons can you find?

Collectors Showcase Mags 007

Collectors’ Gallery featuring the Mickey Mouse Handcar

Collectors Showcase Mags 009

Awesome to see such rare items!

Collectors Showcase Mags 012

Everyone loves movie posters!

I mentioned earlier that magazines of this type, although mostly out of print today, are also valuable for the advertising spreads within. Have a look at a few of my favorites:

Collectors Showcase Mags 004

Where: Disneyland Hotel, Embassy Room

Collectors Showcase Mags 008

Must. Have. These.

Collectors Showcase Mags 010

Walt Disney World Tencennial products

Collectors Showcase Mags 011

19,700 hours to make? I don’t want to know how much this cost!

These magazines are packed with wonderful collectibles from everyone’s childhood, no matter what generation you are from. The articles are insightful. The images breathtaking!

And just how much did I have to pay to obtain these windows into the past? They originally sold for $4.00 to $5.00 between 1982 and 1986 but I paid only $1.00 for three so less than $5.00 for the whole batch.

FUN FACT: Do you remember Shields and Yarnell, the pantomime couple from the 1980’s who were on just about every variety show going?

Shields and Yarnell

Yes? Well, then did you know that they were sometimes billed as ‘Living Puppets’ and so, as collectors themselves, had a vast collection of marionettes and other puppets, including Pinocchio? It’s true according to the January/February 1982 issue of Collectors’ Showcase!

Places: Walt Disney World All-Star Sports Value Resort Review

Today we are sharing our review of a value resort at Walt Disney World.

ALL-STAR SPORTS RESORT

All Star Sports

I’ll admit right off the bat (pun intended) that this isn’t everyone’s favorite value resort. Unless you’re heavily into sports most find the decor pretty un-Disney. However, because of this, you will usually be able to find a room here when all other value resorts are full!

Other than that, the amenities are very comparable with other All-Star resorts.

Location: You will be closest to Blizzard Beach and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Bus Route: Remember that the three All-Star resorts are on the same line, so expect long travel times. From the attractions, you get to Sports first, then Music, and lastly Movies. So coming ‘home’ you are the first to be let off. But leaving for the attractions can be time-consuming as buses may be full coming from other All-Star resorts.

Sports Layout

Rooms: So if you want to be close to the main pool and the Stadium Hall (where your food and buses are) than request buildings 1 or 4. If you like it quiet request buildings 2, 3 or 5. Keep in mind that building 2 has its own little pool for convenience.

End Zone Food Court

Theming: Again many people aren’t wowed by the theming of All-Star Sports. But it follows the same pattern of oversized props as the other All-Star resorts do.

Huge Helmets

I’ve stayed at Pop Century, All-Star Movies and Music, but never All-Star Sports. I intend to one day just to say that I’ve done them all! But I’ll likely try out the Art of Animation first. Maybe that sums up this resort only too well? Unless you’re really into sports!

Dopey on MATCH GAME 78

Disney celebrities show up in the strangest places. In 1978, Dopey hadn’t had a movie gig in over 50 years and was looking to promote himself. It was common in the 70’s to do the game show circuit to maintain or resurrect a career, so:

Match Game 78 Logo

The “all-new, star-studded, big-money” Match Game 73 returned to TV on CBS, with Gene Rayburn returning as host. The year in the title was updated on the New Year’s Eve broadcast for the next six years. This run of the game ended in 1979. The game play for this version had two solo contestants attempting to match the answers given by a six-celebrity panel.

Of course, Dopey can’t talk, so he needed an interpreter:

Match Game 78

They made a great team

Unfortunately, this appearance didn’t do much for Dopey’s career but it is a nice addition to his body of work!

Disney Cruise Line PRINCESSES Use the Stairs

We’re all used to seeing scenes like this:

Disney Cruise Princesses 1

But all good things must come to an end and therefore so must all meet-and-greets:

Disney Cruise Princesses 2          Disney Cruise Princesses 3

It can’t all be glamor and elegance, even for Princesses! At the end of the day even they must hoist up the hems and hike up the stairs:

Disney Cruise Princesses 4

So Tiana sets the royal example and the other Princesses must follow it:

Disney Cruise Princesses 5          Disney Cruise Princesses 6

And so up goes Cinderella, one step at a time, just like us commoners! And one more Princess follows  her royal sisters and trudges the vertical exit machine:

Disney Cruise Princesses 7

See? Hiking the hem!

Being a royal Princess on The Disney Wonder doesn’t guarantee the royal treatment. No elevators for these pretty ladies! But to their credit they handled it with grace and dignity!

BOOK REVIEW: The Art of the Disney Golden Books

Art of Golden Books

Publisher: Disney Editions

Type: Hardcover

Pages: 160

ISBN: 978-1-4231-6380-0

Price: $35.00 US & CAN

This is a great book for anyone who loves the Little Golden Books. I think we all have memories from our childhood of one title or another! The focus of this publication is the artwork, obviously, and it’s about time the artists and their work was featured.

Artwork 2

Artwork

The book is divided into seven sections: History, Art & Artists, Memories, Influences, Creations, Discoveries, and Legacy.

History: This section tells the story of how Disney and Whitman Publishing first started collaborations on Disney-themed books. Eventually Simon & Schuster launched the first Little Golden Book and history was made!

First Disney Golden Book

One of the first Disney Little Golden Books

Art & Artists: Briefly put, the goal was not to replicate the art of the movies but to create an alternate style more suited to the book format. Mary Blair was instrumental in designing the look of the early books.

Memories: Many current Disney/Pixar artists give their recollections of the Little Golden Books and how their young lives were affected by them.

Art of Golden Books fr

Influences: More current artists talk about how their work is influenced by the artwork of the vintage work done on earlier Little Golden Books.

Creations: When Random House acquired the rights to the Little Golden Books in 2001 the line needed to be reimagined. This chapter tells that story.

Art of Golden Books bk

Discoveries: In 1997 Golden Books was in trouble as a company and Disney sought to obtain all of the vintage artwork stored up and saved by them before it was lost! They succeeded. Whew!

Legacy: A short wrap-up chapter on the legacy built by this iconic brand.

Any Disney art fan can’t go wrong with this book and I’m surprised at the reasonable price. It’s beautifully illustrated and the information is informative without being exhausting. I would give this book a 5 out of 5 Stars as I can’t see how it could have been improved!

FINDING NEMO Thru the Portholes of Disneyland

With a title like that, you just know it has to be… something, but not necessarily ‘good’! But it is good because we get to go under the sea (without Ariel) and try to find Nemo:

Porthole 1

Here we go!

Now pay close attention and look carefully thru every porthole. You just never know when, or if, little Nemo will show up:

Porthole 2     Porthole 3

Porthole 4     Porthole 5

We’re starting to see some fish…

Porthole 6     Porthole 7

Maybe the diver will help us…

Porthole 8     Porthole 9

Porthole 10     Porthole 11

Strange things, but no Nemo so far…

Porthole 12     Porthole 13

Well, that was a bust! No Nemo sightings at all. I wonder if we can get our money back from the tour guide? Wait, I’m the tour guide. No refunds!

But hey, if you’re ever at Disneyland in California and have an hour or so to spare, check out the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage and see if you can find Nemo for yourself. If you’d like to get an idea of how that might go, check out one of our voyages by reading the post entitled Our Voyage to Find Nemo in Disneyland.

Disney Designs on T-SHIRTS: Part One

Nothing says ‘souvenir’ like a t-shirt. Nothing says ‘expensive’ like a Disney t-shirt but they are oh-so worth it! Let’s have a look at some fun designs:

T-Shirt 3

Do they sell those umbrellas for real?

T-Shirt 4          T-Shirt 2

Two true-blue characters

T-Shirt 1

Just because…

And of course you just have to pose with a t-shirt. You’ve done that… right?

T-Shirt 5

And that concludes our look at Disney t-shirts. We have exceeded our allotment of cuteness for one post!
