‘Welcome to Neverland’ Small Collectors Plate

I’m addicted to collector plates. I know they have been in decline in recent decades, with the Bradford Exchange taking a financial hit as collectors look elsewhere for things to hang on their walls. But I just can’t leave these pieces of ceramic goodness in the past!

This seven inch ‘Welcome to Neverland’ Small Collectors Plate deserves to be loved and displayed:

Although this plate is clearly based on Disney’s 1953 animated classic Peter Pan, he doesn’t appear anywhere in the imagery. What we have instead is an artists rendering of Neverland itself. Captain Hook’s pirate ship is prominent. The crocodile is waiting for a tasty hand-out in the river. And three fishy beauties are frolicking in the Mermaid Lagoon. No other major landmarks or locations are prevalent.

The parchment banner declaring ‘Welcome to Neverland’ is a nice touch. But who would be making such a proclamation if Peter Pan and Tinker Belle are absent?

On the back of the plate we are exhorted to ‘Think Happy Thoughts’ which we know is the best way to learn how to fly. With a touch of Pixie Dust, of course! No really, don’t forget the Pixie Dust.

I couldn’t find any conclusive date for the production of this plate. The image has been reused on many other pieces of merchandise, as is common with Disney. It was made in Thailand and carries the generic ‘Disney’ trademark.
